it's not about China sending a "mere" patrol boat. it's also not about our "paranoia" towards China. it's the underlying message of the recent actions by China- that it will resort to the most extreme of measures, including a military invasion, as it protects its "ownership" of things that have "China" on their name such as the South China Sea and all the islands and natural resources located therein. |

Opinions similar to this aired by the writer of this article seems to imply that China has sovereign rights over this contested island. It is pretty obvious now that the Philippines Military presence in the island is only a sort of "leisure holiday fishing". Our big brother the US is also reluctant to put pressure on China to refrain from interfering the Philippines assertion of control because the latter has not formally declared Spratlys as within its territorial sovereignty based on the latest Base Line Law apart from political & security implications. It is at this point that the Chinese interpreted the law as a sign of uncertainty and confusion on the part of the Philippine government in the inclusion of the Spartlys under it's territorial jurisdiction. Hence, they re-invigorate their presence in the island in such a scaring fashion. |

Why would it go to war for yet unproven and unmeasured natural resources? China has just shelled out US$50 billion buying large stakes in resources companies like Australia's Oz Minerals and Russia's Rosneft Oil. Sureball sources of resources that would certainly vanish if it initiates aggression in the SCS. China would rather invade Taiwan first rather than the Spratlys. Same consequences, bigger price. |

Thats the problem, its a patrol ship. Patrol ship supposed to locate targets. |
|
Modernization should prioritize: Patrol Ships with air/sub/ship detection, fast & lightly armed for Navy. Surface Attack Aircraft with anti ship/sub attack capability for Airforce. SAM with Radars, Close AA battery capable of shooting ground targets too for Army. This triangle defense will work together and protect us from external threats. | |

your thinking along rational or logical lines. Unfortunately, countries go to war also for emotional, political or nationalistic reasons such as when there is a hardline group within the military, or if there are internal domestic problems, politicians start war to divert attention and so forth and so on. Similarly, if all the people in the world were rational and reasonable, and not crazy, we would not be having murderers, killers, ordictators like Kim Il Sung of Korea, Saddam Hussein, Hitler, etc I suggest everyone read the "history of the philippine army" by ricardo jose. Politicians before world war 2 had the exact same thinking about japan. these politicians said that japan will never invade us for various logical or rational reasons. in national security scenarios, all neighboring countries no matter how small or peaceful are potential aggressors simply because of physical proximity, and thus war game planning includes worst case scenarios. |

its so eerie and deja vu that the congressmen during the commonwealth period in the 1930s were saying the same thing about Japan, that japan will never invade the philippines for this reason or that reason. Same thing today, people are saying that china will not invade for this reason or that reason. people forget that war is a senseless human event and who in his right mind would start a war? but guess what ? human history is a chronology of wars everywhere simply because not all human beings are rational and reasonable. There are fellow human beings out there who are crazy and at the same time leaders of their countries. anyone who has taken a basic course in military intelligence or just read books on intelligence assessments knows that the country is supposed to plan for worst case scenarios and never never never assume that this country or that country will not invade, dominate, harass, intimidate ,subvert, etc, and therefore, a country whose authorities are in their right senses ought to always prepare for worst case scenarios. the book below which fortunately is available for reading online discusses the tragedy of philppine war preparations for World war 2 compunded by politicians who said that Japan will never never invade the philippines and therefore this politicians did not allot a bigger defense budget in the 1930s. The rest is history. Click below to read: http://books.google.com/books?id=kGocnp15G...num=3&ct=result |

China will flex its muscles to assert its claim on the Spratly's. The more we keep our military weak, the more China will get aggressive. They've shown this when they put up the structure on Mischief Reef. Too bad Ramos was too scared to confront China. If i was at his post I would have arrested those Chinese and destroyed the structure. The structure on Mischief Reef is China's rallying point in the fight and it's its biggest achievement so far. The best thing now is to start solidifying our presence (or claim) there. 1) Improve the facilities on all islands including Scarborough shoal off Zambales by adding beacon or bouy with a BIG Philippine flag hoisted on top. 2) Step up maritime patrols on the western edge covering Scarborough and Spratly's. a) buy more Islanders if necessary or reassign SF260s of T41 for the patrols b) send more ships for longer patrols 3) start utilizing the islands and the surrounding waters for fishing and tourism. 4) solidify our claim by passing all the laws that would assert our claim on the islands ASAP! 5) the best battle scenario for us, is to bring the matter to the UN or world court to settle the issue. 6) Allow the US Air Force to make the Clark Air Force base as its strategic base in the whole Asia Pacific. The reason I see why Ramos was too sacred to confront China is that he wanted to create a "Pax Pacifica" crap with China as its core and not the US. He's been stupid here. He forgot that China has its interest in the South China Sea islands. ALL OF IT. From Hong Kong to Taiwan, to the Paracels, the Spratly's and even a tiny pile of rock off Zambales that we now call Scaborough Shoal. This is how greedy China is. It's not even satisfied with stealing Tibet. We cannot form an alliance with China since its interest will ruin the pact. It was never sensitive to the others. It only wants to protect its own interest. The better alternative is to let the US strengthen its foothold on the Asia Pacific and the South China Sea. The US can use it to support its global operations and then we can use the rent for improving our military. It's presence will as well improve the local economy of the surrounding areas. Civil-military ops will be helpful for the locals. Nonetheless, we cannot allow the return of the US naval base due to prostitution issues and related things. It can use Subic for needed visits but not as a permanent base or center of ops. |

Our good friends Presidents Putin and Medvedev can be swayed to sell us their MIGs, AK-47s and two ICBMs for 1/10th of the price for this poem. So we can protect ourselves from invasion from hostile neighbours clamoring for Spratleys. I say maybe: VLADIMIR PUTIN the man has been greatly unperturbed with rumours swirling callousness has allegedly permeated his soul though not his darling whatever was his negative distinguishing characteristic was negated by his premeditated move to resign from his clique his good predecessor's effort to legislate had failed his 'concocted culpabilities' in Chechyna were obscurely detailed law enforcement under his turf was unfairly criticized in yukos what else can he do but to balance his act or the world becomes bellicose russia has no tradition of overruling its political masters but some have been exploiting the silence of the man, devoid of slutty lovers irresponsible semantics have greatly influenced public opinion altered the perception of a man obssessed with glorifying God and his minion i'd say leave the man alone or give him wide breathing space in that way he can exit gracefully and let his successor provide him carapace |
