Akbayan storms Chinese consular office; demands China to back off from Panatag Shoal

Akbayan Party today protested in front of the Chinese Consular Office in Makati to demand the Chinese government to immediately pull out from the Panatag Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. According to the group, Panatag Shoal is 124 nautical miles from Zambales and is well within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The left-leaning group said that the Panatag Shoal is an integral part of Philippine territory and that it is the Chinese government’s responsibility to immediately withdraw from the area.

According to Akbayan Representative Walden Bello, “The Panatag Shoal is an integral and inseparable part of Philippine territory. The incursion of Chinese vessels into that area undermines our country’s sovereignty. The Chinese government should have been more mindful of that fact before it simply acted like an unwelcome visitor.”

“If the Chinese government is sincere in its statements that it wants to see a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the dispute, then it should immediately withdraw its forces in the area,” Bello added.

Akbayan also protested the continued poaching activities of Chinese fishing vessels in the West Philippine Sea. The Filipino political party called such activities “pilfering of Philippine marine resources” and demanded the Chinese government immediately stop such activities.

“This current stalemate in the Panatag Shoal originated with the poaching of large quantities of assorted endangered species, such as corals, giant clams, live sharks and other endangered marine species which were allegedly unlawfully acquired from Philippine seas. Instead of reprimanding its fishermen for such violations of our environmental laws, it even facilitated their escape. In effect, not only are they undermining our sovereignty, they are also coddling marine poachers,” Bello said.

PH, China to tackle Scarborough standoff anew

MANILA, Philippines - Officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are set to meet with Chinese Ambassador Ma Ke Qing to discuss the standoff at Scarborough Shoal.

DFA Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez on Monday said 2 Chinese surveillance ships and a Philippine Coast Guard vessel are still in the disputed area.

However, all Chinese fishing vessels have left the Scarborough lagoon.

The standoff began last week after Philippine maritime authorities tried to arrest Chinese fishermen suspected of poaching in the disputed area.

DFA Undersecretary Erlinda Basilio will handle negotiations with China in place of DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario, who is in the US.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Commander Algier Ricarfrente said the BRP Pampanga left Scarborough shoal around lunch time on Monday, leaving one search and rescue ship, the BRP Edsa Dos, in the area.

BRP Edsa Dos arrived in the area earlier in the day.

"We are continuously monitoring the situation in the area. As of this time, the situation is very stable, very normal," said Lt. Gen. Anthony Alcantara, who heads the military's Northern Luzon Command.

He described the BRP Edsa Dos as a civilian vessel and expressed optimism that the ship won't cause tension to escalate in the area.

"Our navy ships are re-provisioning also but they are ready to support the Coast Guard anytime," he added.

The Coast Guard did not say if another ship, the BRP Pampanga, will return to Scarborough Shoal after getting fresh provisions and fuel.

"I could not give you that detail but the intention is to stay there and show our flag in the area," Ricafrente said.

Navy Chief Vice Admiral Alexander Pama, meanwhile, declined to comment on the Chinese fishermen who were able to escape after being suspected of poaching in Philippine waters.

"My thoughts are better kept to myself," he said.

He added that the issue is now in the hands of the DFA. "From the events that have been happening, I think there had been a quite number of overt actions on both but we don't want to escalate the (situation there)."

kaya nga pina deescalate para di magka giyera.

so from what government acton are you basing your claim that our sovereignty over the area is not being upheld?

but then basing on your previous rants, you just want to troll, just like kfir

Bro. Horizon,

Ano ba nagawa nila with regards to implementing our laws against illegal activities ng China sa Scarborough?

“Mas maganda ba sa’yo na ipadala natin lahat ng maritime vessels natin dun, prevent ‘yung Chinese maritime surveillance vessels that are unarmed and force China to react by sending their own military forces? Would escalation serve the national interest?” Aquino told reporters.

So, Is losing a part of our territory like Scarborough Shoal.. not in our National Interest???

Madaling magsalita ng kesyo ganito dapat nating gawin, ala naman tayong alam sa internal communication between us and China. Let diplomacy take it coarse I know it's hard but we can't wage any war against China they have way more capability than us.

It's not the unarmed surveillance ships we are afraid of. It's the armed and bigger ships and subs they can send as retaliation.

We have to be level-headed about it.

Bro Ice,

This is not about just being level headed, retaliate for what? The Chicoms are not that st__d Bro., they are trying to play us around, if it turns out right for them then they'll take advantage of the situation and continue to take what they want.
It's as simple as "O di kayo kumikibo.. sa amin na ito!" masyado lang natin pinakikita na takot na takot tayo, which is not right, especially to the eyes of the Filipino People and our Military's morale..

Peace

To whom it may concern;

By the way this is our Country we are talking about being stepped on like cockroach our people, our Filipino race, nobody's trying to inflame anybody here and it's all just a matter of personal opinion, some of these opinions are helpful as well, especially for our Govt. whether they are negative or positive. They also monitor these sites 24/7 to get some feelers..

Sana man lang pinaputukan lang sa Ship's Bow ang mga violators ... its a Warning shot .... Also I don't think this Standoff Game will turn to our side even if we have the 2nd and 3rd WHEC for our PN. Why?

Lagi nasa isip natin ang ipapadala ng mga Intsik lahat ng Missile Combat ships nila against us. Same thing will happen all over again, they will leave our EEZ laughing and baka MINURA pa tayo while sailing back to China..

Remember there was one incident in Spratly Islands wherein Goyo come face to face with a Chinese Navy ship.

Kahit paputukan pa natin sila sa tagiliran nila, we didnt have anything to back it up. It was a dangerous situation, and those chinese could easily misinterpreted any warning shot by our navy and then they could even use it as their own grounds to attack us.

And then if they attacked us, whats gonna happen? The US might even blame us for giving them a warning shot when the issue is not even done yet, as both china and the philippines are claiming the scarborough shoal, and both are pretty adamant to it.

We'll do that warning shot when we're really really ready.

so you mean to say that its One-Sided... they fired at our Fishermen as Warning shot but we can never fire any Warning shot whatsoever even if we know they are already violating our Laws?
