Philippines, China make progress in standoff

MANILA - The Philippines said Friday it had made progress in efforts to end a tense standoff with China in the South China Sea but each side was still refusing to remove its ships from the disputed area.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told reporters the two countries had agreed to maintain the "status quo" and not take any further provocative actions at the tiny islets as they sought to negotiate a resolution.

"We have been able to arrive on some agreements. There are areas where we moved forward and there are areas which still remain a challenge," del Rosario said after meeting with China's ambassador to Manila, Ma Keqing.

"Both sides have agreed not to do anything that would escalate the situation there any further."

PH, China withdraw protests in Scarborough standoff

Quote:

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine and Chinese governments on Friday agreed to withdraw their diplomatic protests and seek a peaceful solution to the tension in Scarborough Shoal.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto del Rosario made the announcement after meeting with Chinese ambassador Ma Keqing.

He said the Philippine government will continue to conduct negotiations with the Chinese side.

Lt. Commander Algier Ricafrente, Coast Guard spokesman, said the BRP Pampanga will continue to stay in the area to continue its mission of maritime protection.

He said one Chinese surveillance vessel has already left the area, leaving 2 more in the area.

Sir that a wrong move for us the chinese are really arrogant we should cut tie with this people

I believe this is not a wrong move, as you can see they are trying to ease tension. The Ph Coastguard ship is still there and according to another news another one will be coming. It only shows that our government is dead serious in apprehending the Chinese poachers.

And what do you mean by cut ties? It is easy to say than to be done, China is an economic super power and you just cannot ignore them. What we should be doing is upgrading our naval assets as well as our air assets.

If we only have those things hindi na dapat inabot pa ng 2 research ship and mga poachers. We could have immediately arrested them and towed the boat to Zambales and impound and jailed all the chinese poachers.

It is the testosterone speaking. Cutting ties, forcibly boarding the surveillance ships, etc...

Don't be surprised if the negotiations leads to a mere confiscation of the ceased products and/or a "moro-moro" arrest of the fishermen w/c will later be released once the media is not hot anymore.

Akala ko ba "We will stand on and finish what we started Sir?"

The only way to go is TO STAND FIRM on our position, continue with the Diplomatic protest and for China to back off our territory!
Mag ka alaman na kung may bisa ang MDT natin sa US o bull lang..?
After all WE ARE THE OPPRESSED PARTY HERE AND WE HAVE ALL THE LEGAL RIGHTS. :salute:

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative US think tank, said on the other hand that it is “vital for the US to continue supporting the Philippines as a strong Philippine position in the South China Sea is the best way to ensure peace and prevent Chinese adventurism.”

“After all, the cutter we provided them last year is in the thick of this standoff—without it, the Philippines would never have known of illegal Chinese fishing. Bolstering the Philippines’ flagging ability to defend its territorial sovereignty, at least to a position of self-sustainability, is essential,” Robert Warshaw of the Heritage Foundation said. “If shots are fired, the US is treaty-obligated to begin formal consultations with the Philippines on how best to support it.”

I don't think they were "unnoticed"... most probably part of the "diplomatic moves"...
