China Detains Vietnamese Fishermen in New South China Sea Dispute

Posted Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 at 4:55 am

http://blogs.voanews.com/breaking-news/201...na-sea-dispute/

Chinese authorities have detained 21 Vietnamese fishermen near a contested island in the latest territorial dispute in the potentially oil-rich South China Sea.
A Vietnamese official said Wednesday that Chinese authorities intercepted two fishing boats on March 3 near the Paracel Islands, which are controlled by China but claimed by Vietnam. He said Beijing is demanding $11,000 for the release of the fishermen.

Separately, China on Wednesday protested Vietnam's plan to send six Buddhist monks to re-establish abandoned temples on another series of islands claimed by both countries in the South China Sea.

An editorial in China's official Global Times newspaper said Vietnam was using a “religious guise” to “permanently claim sovereignty” over the Spratly Islands.
Vietnam announced earlier this month that it would send the monks to refurbish the temples and hold rituals there for at least six months starting in April.

Vietnam abandoned the temples in 1975. It recently renovated them as part of wider efforts to re-establish its claims to the Spratlys. The Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also claim portions of the more than 100 island chain.

Beijing insists the entire 3.5 million-square-kilometer South China Sea is part of its territory. It has become increasingly assertive about its maritime claims in recent months, regularly interfering with foreign fishing boats and oil exploration vessels.
To avoid criticism, write nothing, say nothing, do nothing, BE NOTHING.

Philippines, Vietnam eye Spratlys ‘war games’

The Philippines and Vietnam plan to hold joint naval exercises and patrols along common maritime borders in the West Philippine Sea where the two nations have staked claims to some of the Spratly islands.

The agreement was made during the visit of Philippine Navy officials led by Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Alexander Pama to Vietnam from March 11 to 14.
The territorial claims of the Philippines and Vietnam are up against those of regional giant China, which claims the entire Spratlys island chain.

Pama and his staff met with Admiral Nguyen Van Hien, chief of the Vietnam People’s Navy, and General Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.

“This visit is expected to provide opportunities for the conduct of joint maritime exercises in the West Philippine Sea (northeast of Vietnam) and other common maritime domains following proper diplomatic channels under guidance from the Department of National Defense,” the Philippine Navy said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The two Navy chiefs agreed on standard operating procedures (SOPs) to guide interaction between their respective navies in the vicinity of Southeast Cay and the Northeast Cay Island.

EU backs Phl in South China Sea

MANILA, Philippines - The European Union (EU) on Tuesday saidit continues to support a peaceful resolution to the disputed South China Sea.

China, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and Taiwan all claim territory in the South China Sea.

At the Nuclear Security summit in Seoul on Tuesday, European Commission President José Manuel Barroseo and European Council President Van Rompuy assured Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay that they back a peaceful resolution to the disputed islands, citing the United Nations Convention on the law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as major basis.

The leaders discussed recent developments in Southeast Asia region, including the South China sea dispute.

The EU said the meeting underscores the very good bilateral relations between the Philippines and EU.

Both sides agreed to strengthen their ties further.

The EU is already a top investor in the Philippines and a major market for its exports.

They both agreed that there is a potential to expand the economic exchange further.

The EU-Philippines Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, which is ready for signature, will provide the structures for deeper exchanges – from security and trade to human rights and migration.

The EU commended the Philippine government for its commitment to the peace process in Mindanao and for the progress it achieved so far. The EU confirmed its readiness to continue supporting the process politically and through development assistance aimed to facilitate a resolution to the conflict.
