At least Taiwan has the "balls" to this and push through with it. While our military gets more ignorant by the minute.

US appeals for calm over South China Sea

An aerial photo shows Thitu Island, part of the disputed Spratly group of islands,

The United States appealed for calm Friday after Taiwan apparently prepared to deploy missiles in the South China Sea over concerns that rival claimants to disputed islands are building up their arms.
"We encourage all claimants to resolve their disputes through peaceful means, in accordance with international law and without resorting to the threat or use of force," Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters.
Taiwan's defense minister Kao Hua-chu endorsed a proposal passed by the country's defense committee Wednesday demanding coastguard units in Taiping and the Pratas islands -- claimed by China -- be armed with Chaparral or Tien Chien I missiles.
China claims all of the South China Sea, including hundreds of Spratly islands and reefs.
Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Malaysia and the Philippines claim all or part of the Spratlys, which could lie on top of large oil reserves.
The Taiwanese coastguard currently has a 130-strong garrison on Taiping, the biggest island in the Spratlys archipelago.

China is the biggest antagonist in the region, the US should not just talk the talk but must take steps in ensuring that China or the other claimants will not go ballistic if you know what I mean.

ni84 you do know that Russian Federation will have to side with the Chinese whether they like it or not if there would be any conflict between China and US allied countries.

A big "IF", if that were true I would hate to be in the receiving end of a Russian missile. Besides Russia and China are only allied against the US and not it's other allies, because those US allies are business partners for the Russians and the Chinese. I see no issue in purchasing Russian defense hardware.

Cold war is long over. I don't think Russia will side with China. Russia and China are trade partners. They are not part of any kind of military alliance. They have their own disputes.

I fail to see how this will affect our further enhancements with the our relations with Russia. Besides both nations are not that much affected by the economic crisis in the US and it's allies, for them a military conflict in our region will disrupt their relax state as they see no use of going head to head with the US.

The US can only look from a far, the Chinese know how to play the game and they know that attacking anyone will not be good but attacking them over a couple of islands will not bring the US halfway around the world to wage war on them.

Besides the Russian know how to separate business and geopolitics. When money talks people tend to listen.

Even if I live in Mindanao I also have connections in Cebu, and according to them the Russians are becoming more and more interested in investing in Cebu and they have already made in roads in Cebu as well. That is only the start and that will lead to further cooperation to the point of high level military ties and defense related articles.
