"Mischeef Reef" and "First Thomas Shoal" pose a serious threat to the country's security setup. Those sites are very near to Palawan. Their strategic importance to the country's national defense cannot be disregarded. HAD THE GOVT AND THE AFP DONE WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE BEFORE THE TAKEOVER AND EVEN WHEN THE INCURSION WAS STILL BEING STARTED WE MAY NOT BOTHERING MUCH ABOUT THIS NOW. |

Looking at the map above, it looks like China and Vietnam are competing for the most occupied islands. I believe that if a conflict should arise in the Spratleys, Taiwan's lone island would go first, then China will try to take Vietnam's. But, who knows, China's vision of uniting Asia under them will never happen |

Arroyo denies accord means RP has withdrawn claims to Spratly 04/13 4:41:05 PM BATARAZA - President Gloria Arroyo explained Wednesday the Philippine government’s decision to enter into a joint oil exploration venture with China and Vietnam in the South China Sea does not amount to renouncing its territorial claim to the disputed Spratly group of islands. Reputedly rich in oil reserves, the Spratlys lie south of Palawan. Aside from the Philippines, the other countries which have staked territorial claims to the area include China, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan. The Philippines recently signed up with China and Vietnam a joint oil exploration venture in the Spratlys in the spirit of their mutual commitment to resolve in a peaceful manner their conflicting claims in the area. Pres. Arroyo stressed, however, that her administration will not abandon the country’s claim to the oil-rich Spratly Islands group. The accord, the Chief Executive, said "will have no effects on our claims because based on the agreement, we still recognize that we have conflicting claims" in the area. In the event that the oil exploration project successfully finds oil in an area within Palawan’s territorial jurisdiction, she said Palawan will greatly benefit from its revenues. If the oil reserves would be discovered outside the municipal waters of Kalayaan in the Spratlys, however, Pres. Arroyo said the national government will have exclusive rights to its revenue earnings. The President described the Philippine-China-Vietnam trilateral accord as a "diplomatic breakthrough for peace and security" in the region. She was presented a copy of the tripartite agreement for joint marine seismic undertaking in the South China Sea signed by the Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC), China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) and Vietnam Oil and Gas Corp. (PetroVietnam). |

The intention is always there, but there is not enough firepower to achieve this, and in no way that these territories will be given up by the claiming countries like China thru diplomatic means. As it can be remembered the claim on Sabah years back has been obviously abandoned. Diplomatic efforts has been exerted but to no avail, Malysia will not give it up, and if we choose the confrontational way of grabbing it back, it's only a waste of time and resources as Malaysia's armed forces is far stronger and bit equipped than ours. |

Great point TOPP. All our folks really have to do is look at exactly what we have in our inventory and compare what those other claimant countries have in theirs. Especially with China's track record when it comes to human rights violations towards their own and Tibet, do we really think they're going to listen to us? Don't mean to get off topic with this, but heck, all one has to do is take notice of all the violent anti-Japan rallies going on over there right now. Didn't you notice how their officials are turning a blind eye and the way they are responding to these demonstarions (mainly because Japan might be given a permanent seat at the UN Security Council)? Let alone how their diplomatic response is towards Japan itself. And do you know why? Because they got the muscle / forces to back it up. In our case . . . WE DONT! Sad, but true. |

" this is the sad reality. We know that this things gonna happened and our goverment had been sleeping. Now that these territories are threatened to be taken from us completely still we are not doing anything. Just look our Air Defence disbanded, planned aquisition of MRF was stop, capital ships were also abandoned. I dont know what kind of defence policy we have but its not going to the right direction. We need to prepare!!! let us not ignore the threat. |
