Actually, Ambassador Cuisia prefers missille armed warships over the cutters and multi-role jet fighters over the Hamiltons and Hueys the RP is getting.

Just wondering, is this Cuisia's personal preference ? or does he have a military adviser that gives him inputs when he states this preference ?

if there is money, then why not, his preference is the ideal.

the 1.2 billion for each WHEC is already huge money by PN standards and for that money, I doubt if there is any westbloc shipyard that can build a brandnew ship the size of the WHEC.

Paging ex president El Tabako being friendly with Chicoms are fine! Ok but what happen with your friendly diplomacy is the suffering of our very own AFP's stalled upgrading, with all your being friendly policy has forgotten our own defense modernization, please take note that even Myanmar who is still suffering from prev.civil war has much decent military hardware than us. This Chicom is two face they smile at you and donating tons of cons.equipment yet they slowly building up structures in Spratly without you knowing it. Be friendly ok but build up our own AFP so that when the times comes we are ready for any eventuality! Lastly if my neighbor is harassing me, I wont even buy his ice or ice candy.

Philippines shops for US military gear

Ramos envisions a “common defense” of the South China Sea instead of rival claimants locked in a perpetual war mode, pointing their arsenals against each other.

His proposed setup is akin to a joint patrol of contested waters in which all claimant countries would contribute forces to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.

“What do we do with these existing armies? Why don’t we in Asia Pacific agree to treat each other like partners in peace and prosperity instead of us potential rivals 10 years from now?” he said.

Ramos noted the marked changes in the global security environment after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, which precipitated the disintegration of the Soviet Union and with it, the threat of international communism.

In both the Korean War and Vietnam War, the US had pursued a policy of containment, triggering the mushrooming of US military bases in Asia and around the world as the free world’s response to the advance of communism, he said.

The Philippines sided with the US in both wars, nurturing a political, economic and military relationship in post-World War II which did not always sit well with communist China.

But with China embracing capitalism, its economy is set to eclipse the US in 2016, as the International Monetary Fund recently predicted.

US cites ‘re-energized’ relations

Cuisia last week said in a press gathering the Philippines would be purchasing "eight cutters over five years" from the US. The cutters are part of the government-to-government cooperation on heightened Philippines’ coastal watch.

Cuisia formally received the Hamilton class cutter May 13 in California. He said the cutter, named after Philippine hero Gregorio del Pilar, would sail for the Philippines on July 5 and arrive there by August.

I suspect this is a typo...or taken out of context. While the U.S. is retiring about 8 cutters over the next five years, I'm pretty sure a few are already spoken for. I think Cuisia meant 8 "patrol craft", of which 2-3 could be cutters.

I think Fidel Ramos was right about making peace with china and all his joint patrol ideas and others.

But i disagree when he refused to arm the philippine armed forces and join the rest of SE Asia in updgrading their militaries.

In fact, the philippines is not really joining the arms race, but what they doing is simply trying to modernize their armed forces because it has been held back so many times, and it is indeed an overdue acquisition - due to previous corruptions... In fact, Fidel Ramos name has also been involved on this scandals, pocketing the revenues they collected from selling government properties at a philippine military base at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. Those stolen funds are actually meant to modernize the AFP since 1996.

Fidel Ramos is a fV@ck!*g guy. He's a godfocker. :armyfrown:

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE - 5:58 p.m.) Washington has vowed to give its full support to Manila as tensions continue to escalate in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) with China's recent incursions even in areas within the Philippine's 200 nautical miles of exclusive economic zone.

United States Ambassador to Manila Harry Thomas Jr. volunteered the statement of support in his speech during Tuesday's launching of the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Program.

We, the United States, are with the Philippines. We will continue to work and consult with each other on all issues, including the South China Sea," Thomas said.

PNoy welcomes US Ambassador Thomas' statement of support for PH

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno S. Aquino III expressed elation on Tuesday over the statement of United States Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas for its support to the country on issues, including the South China Sea and the Spratly Islands.

“I assure you that on all subjects, the US is with the Philippines. The Philippines and the United States are strategic allies. We are long standing treaty partners. We will continue to consult and work with each other on all issues, including the South China Sea and Spratlys,” Thomas said.

Siyempre ikinatutuwa natin iyon (statement from the US Ambassador) lalo na yung pagpapaalala na strategic partner nila tayo,” the President said during a press conference in Malacanang.
