THE ARMED FORCES will mark its 69th anniversary on Dec. 21 with only simple ceremonies to save the 1.3 million pesos originally allocated for the celebration.

The money will be used instead to purchase relief goods for the thousands of victims of two recent storms, Liuetenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual, Armed Forces information officer, said in a statement.

The commanders of the military's three major services will also each donate one million pesos for the National Disaster Coordinating Council's relief operations.

There will only be a simple flag-raising ceremony at the military's general headquarters in Quezon City to mark the anniversary.

Not their personal dough though... :aberet:
Renounce your hatred. Seek, find, and embrace the truths you are fortunate enough to discover, cherish them use them to anchor you in the sea of chaos that is the world we live in. When the twilight draws near, when you are pushed to the very limits of your soul, when it seems that all you have left are the dead remains of the fabric of your life, believe.

AFP marks 76th anniversary sans pomp and pageantry
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines—The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) toned down its 76th founding anniversary ceremonies at Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday in light of the recent calamity in Mindanao that has claimed over 1,000 lives.

“Even though our physical bodies want to celebrate the anniversary of the Armed Forces today, our hearts and minds are with our countrymen who were victims of the storm in Mindanao,” Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa, Chief of staff of the AFP, said in his speech.

Dellosa said that the AFP’s rescue personnel who were supposed to join in the parade had already been sent to the 4th Infantry Division in Mindanao to assist in the search and rescue operations.

The AFP’s air and water assets are traveling back and forth from Manila to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City, he said.

The AFP cancelled its fly-by demonstration of 31 aircraft including a high-speed fly-by to signal the start of the ceremony.

The traditional “AFP Ball” dinner party where the commander-in-chief can personally meet the many officers of the AFP has also been cancelled.

“The funds that will be saved in this ceremony will go to the victims of the calamity,” Dellosa said.

Dellosa thanked the soldiers who volunteered to donate one day of their meal subsistence allowance, equivalent to about P90, to the victims of the calamity.

“It is true that during the times when we are in the middle of a storm is when we most feel the spirit of ‘Bayanihan’,” Dellosa said.

“With Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa leading the way, he has become an example of our soldiers’ endless generosity and care for our countrymen. With the help of the Armed Forces, they have led the continuous operations for bringing relief to the devastated areas,” President Benigno Aquino said in his speech.

The AFP’s demonstrations included a parade of troops, armored and engineering vehicles, and an actual skydiving performance.

Civilians and others from the private sector who want to help in the relief operations may get in touch with Rear Admiral Jose Miguel Rodriguez at 0926-652-8499, Dellosa said.

PNoy praises AFP for simple celebration of 76th anniversary
AMITA O. LEGASPI, GMA News December 21, 2011 11:27am

The Armed Forces of the Philippines’ decision to simplify the celebration of its 76th anniversary and donate the fund for it to the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong received Tuesday the appreciation and praises of President Benigno Aquino III.

“Balita ko kanselado na ang inyong AFP ball at ang pondong sana’y gagastusin niyo sa pagdiriwang ay ilalaan na lang sa pagtulong sa mga biktima ng bagyong Sendong. Sa ngalan po ng bansa, maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong sakripisyo at pagbabayanihan,” Aquino said in his speech during the celebration at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

Aside from scrapping the AFP ball, the military leadership also removed the fireworks display and the flyby by the Philippine Air Force which saved the organization some P3 million.

“Sa likod ng kalungkutang idinulot ng trahedyang ito, muling nabuhay ang diwa ng bayanihan ng mga Filipino. Sa pangunguna ng bagong talagang Chief of Staff na si Lt. Gen. Jessie Dellosa, nagsilbing ehemplo ang ating mga sundalo sa wagas na pagbubukas palad at pagmamalasakit sa ating mga kababayan,” Aquino said.

In his speech, Dellosa said they have mixed feelings as even if they want to celebrate their anniversary, their heart is with those who are reeling from the effects of Sendong.

The AFP chief said he also ordered a simple celebration of Christmas parties.

“Simple na din ang pagdiriwang ng ating mga Christmas parties dito sa General Headquarters at ang iba nga ay kinansel na rin at nagbigay ako ng direktiba sa lahat ng mga unit commanders to do the same. Inalis na rin natin ang traditional na AFP ball na dapat ay mamayang gabi,” he said.

Dellosa also thanked the soldiers who voluntarily donated their subsistence allowance to the victims of Sendong.

“Tunay nga na sa panahon na tayo ay nasa gitna ng unos ay mas nararamdaman natin ang diwa ng bayanihan,” he said. –KG, GMA News

Very good and reasonable moved by the AFP.

I wonder if the CPP-NPA and other rebel/terrorrist groups did the same thing for their own countrymen.
