As much as I am in favor of land based SAMs and ASMs and we DO NEED it, but having them without naval ships will not work in the current WPS dispute... missiles cannot block ships and oil rigs and Chinese fishermen and other "Chinese civilian" ships planting flags, occupying atolls/shoals/islands and constructing bases within those islands... naval assets are still an integral part of our defense... but having ships and missiles are much better...

But having some SS and SAM missile weapons can still give some tough messages to any would be poachers and intruders.

Philippines needed these missiles, radars, subs and fighter aircrafts because once China deploy there first aircraft carriers they will take the whole south china sea islands. Philippines location towards all the disputed islands is the biggest advantage but lack of missiles, radars, subs and aircrafts is the biggest set back. The Scarborough shoal can still be saved by expediting the AMX planes delivery with anti-ship missiles, air launch torpedo's and sidewinders. Philippines also need to put all available funds and acquire SU-27 from Russia. Philippines having at least a squadron or two and a few months will guarantee the Scarborough shoal from falling to China's new map. China will lose what ever ships in the area before they can send reinforcement forces. There air force can't stay too long at the area and leaving there navy unprotected by hit and run mission of the Philippine aircrafts. China know this weakness that's why they are in a hurry to deploy there first aircraft carrier, hopefully by then that Philippine will be armed with super sonic cruise missiles to counter it.

IMHO China doesn't have to wait for their aircraft carrier to be operational, they already have the Panatag Shoal covered. They have an airbase at the Woody Island within the Paracel Islands which is roughly 610 kms away only from the area of Panatag Shoal, clearly within striking distance of their SU-27 which have operational range of 1,340kms. :armyeek:

IMHO and how far is this island that's what I thought. Clark air base is closer to Scarborough and can accommodate multiple squadrons and can launch non stop airstrikes. Panatag airstrip is not long enough runway for Su-27 and maybe only accomadate only four Su-27. The refuel and reinforcement still will come from china. Philippines has two advantages over any countries claiming the Spratly it's response time will be faster cause of the proximity and mutual defense treaty with the US. China also knows they can't strike Clark airbase or any airbase in the Philippines because of the US advance military will destroy there developing military and will armed the AFP to the teeth like they did to Taiwan. This crisis caused by China actually helping the Philippines government to realize how they need to fast track the AFP modernization and raise it's military weapons procurement. I like to thank China for a little push to those Philippines lazy lawmakers and congress to finally expedite the AFP modernization. I will finally see a strong Philippine military again like in the Marcos Era or even better.

@Inkognito, do you have any idea regarding prices of these air defense systems that you're proposing??
They look good especially the Skyshield 35 for PH to use for land base AADS and maybe even for PN ships.. hope it's cheaper than other CiWS!

Green the Su's would need to be refueled by the H6 tankers. Those tankers could be co-located on woody or possibly out on Hainan. They will likely need two sets of tankers to cover a patrol effectively. If we saw tankers in Woody then that would be a clear message.

Make no mistake..if the Chinese follow their doctrine concerning land they strongly feel is theirs to a T, then there is a good chance they would redirect some of their SS missiles to Clark or any other base the americans would use to launch strikes from. Wherever the americans went, they would need a patriot or SM armed ship to defend against strikes.

Now, that said I see two things out of that. If they don't launch missiles strikes then my guess is they know they do not have a legitimate claim. If they do launch strikes then they strongly feel they have a claim in their minds OR they know they have to make a strong statement or no one will take them seriously in other claims. In either case this could be a dangerous escalation.

Sorry, but I could not find any info on the actual pricing...

In Aug. 1, 2012 issue of Janes Defence Weekly, it reports that Russia is looking for other countries to buy arms that's originally destined for Syria but could not be delivered because of the situation in that country.

The arms that are originally for delivery in 2013 are the following:

36 Yak-130 combat trainer aircraft
12 MiG-29M/M2 Multi-role Fighters
4 S-300PMU-2 missile batteries

DND, if you are interested, just contact Rosoboronexport or the Russian Embassy. :armywink:

the government should get the S-300 batteries, it offers immediate air defense capability while other platforms are being pursued.
