Read this one from Cebu Daily News, 25 October 2005, p. 5. PAF gets another 'Super Huey' CLARK SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE - The Philippine Air Force rolled out yesterday its second "Super Huey", improving the capability of its 50 or so fleet of Vietnam War-vintage helicopters. Chopper 662 was upgraded by Air Force engineers into a Huey II by changing its engine with a more powerful one, enabling it to carry more load. The chopper was one of three aircraft restored this month, according to Brig. Gen. Fernando Manalo, chief of the 410th maintenance wing, the PAF unit that handles such task. Maj. Gen Christie Datu, deputy PAF commander, unveiled the Super Huey in time for the wing's 58th founding anniversary. The upgrade of Chopper 662 and the restoration of Huey 520 and SF-260M 601 Marchetti have saved the government at least P43 million, Manalo said. This and last August's savings of P32 million generated from the repair of four other aircraft brought the saved amount to P75 million, he said. "Credit goes to the extraordinary ingenuity of our master repairmen in the wing," he added. The Bell Helicopter Textron Corp. supplied the modification kit and supervised the upgrade, Manalo said. Engineers removed the chopper's Lycoming T53-L-13B and replaced it with a T53-L-703 engine. "This means that the chopper can carry more loads and provide adequate thrust for added versatility during combat, search and rescue operations," Manalo said. The first Super Huey, repaired in Singapore, cost the Air Force at least P70 million. The Super Huey has been declared airworthy for an acceptance flight, Manalo said. The Huey 520, on the other hand, underwent major structural repair on its gearbox and fuselage belly section. It is also scheduled for acceptance flight. Acceptance flights are the last test flights conducted by test pilots before the aircraft are reintroduced into active combat duties. The Marchetti, a training plane detailed at the Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, required at least 220 replacement items. It now has a new pair of landing gear, enabling it to stand without cradles. Aside from a Lycoming IO-54D engine, it has also been fitted with refurbished communication and navigational equipment. /INQUIRER NEWS SERVICE |

Anyone have a picture? I can confirm it if we got the current picture. There are detail differences between the H model and the Huey II. If you had a shot the covered the rotor, thats the best way. |

taken from the Uniflight website: http://www.uniflight.com/huey.html ![]() BELL HUEY II Huey II Modernization Program Extends And Enhances Life Of A Proven Performer If you need unparalleled, increased performance from your Huey fleet, look to the Bell Huey II. This factory-certified upgrade package boasts 28% more takeoff power and an increase in payload of over 291 kg (642 lbs). Designed to deliver, regardless of altitude or temperature, the UH-1H with the Huey II kit installed can provide an incredible 275% increase in hover ceilings at 4,308 kg (9,500 lbs.) on a hot day. This comes with an improved maintenance schedule and dramatically reduced operating costs. As testimony to its reputation as a workhorse, the Huey is used by more military forces in more countries than any other helicopter. The UH-IH helicopter has served the United States military for more than 20 years, setting the performance standards for all helicopters. Since the start of production, over 10,000 of these flying workhorses have been built. Today, over 5,000 of these reliable, dependable Bell products are still flying in over 45 countries around the world. Unlike many risky modernization programs, the Huey II is a helicopter based upon proven design and utilizes the durable existing UH-1H airframe and production parts from current programs still in production. Every part for the Huey II is in production today, which reduces your risk and guarantees a ready parts supply to assure many more years of continuous service and an infinite useful life span as components are overhauled or exchanged at retirement. The Huey II's increased performance is achieved through an upgraded Lycoming engine, which is the same engine that powers the AH- IS Cobra. The increased power generated by the Lycoming T53-703 engine feeds the dynamic components taken from the powerful Bell 212. This is the kind of power which yields a 39% increase in hover on a standard day and over 275% increase in hover capability on an extremely hot day at the high temperatures found in real world environments. The Huey II is a modernized aircraft, made popular by its renowned dependability and proven performance. It will now fly more payload than its predecessor the UH-1H, and all at a significantly reduced cost of operations. Most importantly, the Huey II is backed by the world's leader in helicopter manufacture...Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. Operational Benefits-Increased Performance: * Increased Payload * Increased IGE Hover Capability * Increased OGE Hover Capability * Increased Payload for Same Range Modernization Program You Can Perform On Your Own Existing Aircraft ![]() Most operators who currently fly the UH-IH can perform the modernization in their own facilities. The Huey II modernization is essentially an assemblage of upgraded components which are incorporated into your existing UH-1H airframe. In about 12 weeks, the aircraft can be dismantled, the transmission and the engine rebuilt, the new parts installed, and the Huey II emerges ready to take its place in the operational fleet. Or, if it better suits your needs, the modernization can be accomplished in the United States by a highly qualified Bell authorized facility. If You Fly The UH-1 H Or UH-1 D Now, You Can Modernize And Maintain The Huey Il. Only one simple special production tool is required to accomplish the modernization, and the purchase of other tools needed to maintain the helicopter is minimal. The program can be designed around your needs and experience. Bell Helicopter offers technical assistance if you need it, when you need it, and where you need it. We have built the aircraft as you will build it. Our plans for you will be correct and simple to follow. The TEXTRON Lycoming Powerplant ![]() At the heart of the Huey II modernization program is an upgraded version of the familiar Textron Lycoming T53-L- 13B turboshaft powerplant. Since its introduction, the T53 turboshaft has come to represent reliable and outstanding hot day/high altitude performance as well as effective modular technology for military and commercial applications throughout the world. The T53 was the first turbine ever designed specifically for helicopter applications; consequently it affords ease of maintenance and assembly interchangeability with a negligible change in SFC's. These features enable the T53 engine to be upgraded in the Huey II to provide an increase of 400 SHP, 28% more takeoff power, and handle 642 lbs/291 kg more payload with essentially the same fuel consumption as the current UH- IH. Mission Performance By incorporating the desirable efficiencies and components of existing successful aircraft, the Huey II advances as a performance leader for multi-mission capable transport helicopters. The Huey II modernization re-suits in a significantly more effective helicopter with enhanced flight and performance features. Hover In Ground Effect (Takeoff) The improved power capacity of the Huey II modernization increases the IGE hover ceiling 39% on a standard day at 9,500 lbs/4,308 kg. Real performance benefits are realized on a hot day (ISA + 20° C), when a Huey II achieves a 275% increase over the UH-iH in hover ceiling at 9,500 lbs/4,308 kg gross weight. The Cost Efficient Solution ![]() The improved reliability and maintainability of the Huey II has resulted in a helicopter that requires significantly less maintenance touch time than that for the UH-1H. This produces a substantial savings, as shown below, and vastly improves operational ready rates for the field commanders. Overhaul requirements for Huey II major components have been greatly reduced from the UH-1H by using commercial Model 205/212 parts. This greatly reduces maintenance requirements and overall life cycle costs. ![]() Based on a flying hour program of thirty hours per month, the Huey II program, including engine upgrade, pays for itself in less than ten years. With a 40-hour per month flying program, the payback period is reduced to less than seven and one-half years. The Huey II continues to save you money throughout the life of the helicopter. The Sensible Solution To Continued Effective Helicopter Operation The Huey II modernization is the logical and sensible solution for current and prospective operators to maximize the excellent features of the existing UH-1H. This cost effective upgrade program will result in an aircraft that is more reliable, more efficient and more effective in a wider range of environments. The Huey II already has a proven service history, lower maintenance costs and the backing and support of the world's leading helicopter manufacturer... Bell Helicopter Textron Inc.

Question. If my memory serves me right, there was a posted pix once of a later version of the Huey. But this one sports a four bladed main rotor. How come the Huey II still sports the two-bladed type? Couldn't we upgrade it to the four-bladed type? |

Command is about authority, about appointment to a position. Effective leadership is different. It must be learned and practiced in order for it to rise to the level of art. You must love those you lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment but you cannot lead without it; and without leadership, command is a hollow experience. .. a vacuum often filled with mistrust and ignorance.
