The Philippine Navy has an outpost nearby at Lawak Island. It is located 20-30 kilometers away from Jackson Atoll (Quirino Reef).

Our PN should have been readying their equipments and materials so as to upgrade our existing facilities in the WPS once we receive a favorable ruling from the UN tribunal.

US, China Standoff Forthcoming In South China Sea

http://www.morningnewsusa.com/us-china-standoff-forthcoming-south-china-sea-2361731.html

Tensions continue to rise in the South China Sea region as Beijing reportedly blocked access to disputed region’s atoll. Furthermore, China also warned the United States to stay out of the conflict although the West just said recently that anymore provocations from Beijing can lead to serious consequences. Will world war erupt?China just deployed ships to South China Sea’s disputed atoll which is now preventing Filipino fishermen access to the fishing grounds.Specifically, seven Chinese ships sailed to the Quirino Atoll, also known as Jackson Atoll, in the past weeks. The deployment has furthered spurred tensions in the fragile region, according to Philippine officials. “This is very alarming, Quirino is on our path when we travel from Palawan to Pagasa. It is halfway and we normally stop there to rest,” Reuters quoted Eugenio Bito-onon Jr, the mayor of nearby Pagasa Island in the Spratly Islands. “I feel something different.

The Chinese are trying to choke us by putting an imaginary checkpoint there. It is a clear violation of our right to travel, impeding freedom of navigation,” the mayor added.US just recently warned China of further actions in the disputed region but Beijing countered this by saying that the West is only using the issue to contain its rise. According to a new report from Economic Times, China is calling for the region be a “sea of peace, friendship and cooperation” rather than “excuse or a tool.” The report quoted Wang Guoqing, spokesperson National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as saying that South China Sea concern “shall not be turned into an excuse or a tool by certain country to contain China’s development.”“What the United States has done has intensified tensions and is most likely to cause militarization in the South China Sea,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei

U.S. Dispatches Destroyers to South China Sea Amid Tensions

Local mayor: 'The Chinese are Trying to Choke Us'
Published: 10 mins ago

The United States, in a show of force aimed at confronting China’s rising aggression, dispatched an aircraft carrier and five escort ships, including destroyers, to the South China Sea, military officials said Friday. The dispatch signals China that the U.S. is not only watching, but prepared to defend, its interests regarding the disputed sea region, Fox News reported. It comes in response to China’s dispatch of several ships earlier this week to ward off Filipino fishermen from utilizing commonly shared fishing areas, the Quirino Atoll. Then, Eugenio Bito-onon, the mayor of Pagasa Island, a nearby post, said in Reuters: “This is very alarming. Quirino is on our path when we travel from Palawan to Pagasa. It is halfway and we normally stop there to rest. I feel something different. The Chinese are trying to choke us by putting an imaginary checkpoint there. It is a clear violation of our right to travel, impeding freedom of navigation.”The Navy Times reported the U.S. sent the USS John C. Stennis, two destroyers, two cruisers and the 7th Fleet flagship to the area in response.

A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group is operating in the South China Sea, with the Chinese Navy apparently keeping close watch. The Navy's Seventh Fleet said in a press release Friday that the USS John S. Stennis, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, as well as the guided-missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS Stockdale, the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and the supply ship USNS Rainier had been operating in the eastern part of the South China Sea since March 1 after passing through the Luzon Strait between the Philippines and Taiwan.Capt. Greg Huffman, Stennis' commanding officer, noted an increase in Chinese activity near the ships in his strike group."We have Chinese ships around us that we normally didn't see in my past experience," Huffman said in the Navy release. He last deployed there in 2007.

What's the reason why they were ordered to stop?
Why is it cowardly?

Please expand. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

My statement is directed to the Philippine Government not to the Philippine Navy or the Coast Guard. In my humble opinion, not patrolling the area because there is case filed in The Hague is plain St@#%$ and cowardly to me. Its our territory, why should we stop patrolling the area when it strengthen our claim if we do so? Its not the fault of our Navy or coast guard, its the fault of my government, because they are the ones that ordered the navy and the coast guard to stop patrolling the area. they should know better. I envy the government of Vietnam, they never stop patrolling courageously and defend the territory they claim even though they are being outnumbered and outgunned by the Chinese. They lost many soldiers there but they never ordered their navy and coast guard to stop patrolling. That Hong is my humble opinion only. please forgive me if you feel that my statement is inappropriate.

No. I did not take offence. I just wanted you to expound.

As for me, I will sum it all in one word: PRESENCE

even though Jackson atoll, mischief reef, Recto bank, and Scarborough shoal are within the 200 mile EEZ of the Philippines as allowed under the general articles of UNCLOS, the problem is the bully claims these areas under the so-called 'indisputable sovereignty" based on their so-called historical reasons. Thus, even though, the general UNLOS laws favors the Philippines, these areas are in dispute due to the bully, and maybe a good reason for the Philippines not to send ships there to avoid giving the bully a pretext for firing on us for whatever reason, and muddling/complicating the dispute further . In order to get a specific UNCLOS ruling on these areas and other nearby areas, the Philippines filed this now famous case with UNLOS tribunal- ITLOS. Once ITLOS issues the specific ruling on which areas are "indisputably" ours :) then, the Philippine govt has no more reason not to send ships to those awarded areas. If the philippine govt still stops the PN and PCG from sending ships to those awarded areas, then the govt will be violating the philippine constitution , and that is the time to launch a coup or hold protest actions to lynch congress. Thus, Philippine govt still has 2 to 3 months to use the excuse of waiting for the ITLOS ruling. After that, BOOM ! :snipemo: :pistols: :asniper: :fire:

"The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which established EEZs as a feature of international law, gives coastal states the right to regulate economic activities within their EEZs, it does not give coastal states the right to regulate foreign military/paramilitary activities in the parts of their EEZs beyond their 12-nautical-mile territorial waters."

"However, China's position is that UNCLOS gives coastal states the right to regulate not only economic activities, but also foreign military activities, in their EEZs."

So taking into account the rights of a country as allowed by the UNCLOS - as legal... I don't see why maintaining presence in that disputed area could be detrimental to the courts ruling on the arbitration case. It certainly will not affect the court's decision because it is recognised as your right under the UNCLOS. Maritime presence doesn't necessarily mean your ships have to shoot anyone. You just have to show that you are there. - That is PRESENCE.

Do you really think that you are going to get penalised for doing something that is considered legal and within your rights ??? Seriously ???

I do not believe this decision is cowardly nor st.upid. But it believe it is extremely over cautious, and that is a mistake, as it sends the wrong "signals" to the antagonist.

And if this happens around those areas?

Are you just going to say ???

"Sorry, we weren't there.
We didn't want to do anything that will jeopardize our position at the international tribunal.
But don't worry, the Chinese will rescue you. "

the Quirino/Jackson Atoll incident shows how s-t-u-p-i-d and incompetent Albert del Rosario and other "intelligent folks" at DFA and their masters at the Palace really are. they know for a fact that China, the US and other global superpowers do not recognize the existence of and respect international law, including international court rulings, and that the best way to assert ownership and sovereignty over a territory is through effective occupation. yet, these Yellow-colored Liberal Party fools did not do anything and even ordered our forces to back down, eventually giving China the opportunity to slowly but surely annex Philippine territory on the West Philippine Sea.
