We all know who have prompted Taiwan to become aggressive around the Spratleys. Taiwan would not dare make such gesture on their own. This is another curve ball China is throwing in the mix. We all know that China claims Taiwan and all territories Taiwan claims to be theirs, water or land. What you will have are ships operating under the Taiwan flag but with a joint venture with China (Taiwan as the junior partner).

Taiwan had become a puppet of China just as Cambodia. Taiwan's leadership think that appeasing China and doing their will, will provide them (Taiwan) some kind of peace with China. This is weak leadership at its worst and, to think the the Communist is only looking for peaceful coexistence with them. If that's the case, they know nothing about Communism. The fact of the matter is, betting against the Phil. may be a big mistake. With the Phil. economy growing faster, it's military will grow proportionately as well. And in a decade or so, the Phil. can secure their southern flank against these Communist.

The Taiwan syndrome was what was starting to happen to the Phil. before this administration. It's former political and military leader had already given up the challenge they had with China and words of capitulation had been seeping out from the news. The defiance of the new leadership to Communism is now apparent and it had gotten China all bent out of shape. How can a tiny country not been intimated by us the Chinese? China had just hit a brick wall in the Phil; perhaps not yet the military wall, but this brick wall starts from the inside of the Filipinos.

This episode may be a blessing in disguise for the Phil. Perhaps the Taiwanese ships would be a better target for the Phil. Navy if the Phil. need to shoot somebody to prove it's seriousness (and that's a big IF bec. I am not in favor of a war). Yes, Taiwan is just as huge as China militarily when one is looking from the bottom up. But what the Phil. have in this scenario is leverage on Taiwan from the USA bec the USA is still the largest military supplier for Taiwan. Yes, China at some point will declare that shooting a Taiwanese vessel is tantamount to shooting a Chinese vessel. Just tell them that we have no qualms in shooting either of you.

Oh, they are just making noises to tell everyone that they still exist and should not be ignored. I'm curious how China will respond. Will they be on our side or keep quiet and side with Taiwan? I'm sure they will be against it, lest they be accused of being a stooge of Taiwan.

Santi, it is clear that China will be in charge when Taiwan starts their surveys.

But the world thinks the Phil. have the high moral ground as long as it is fighting within the UN mandated EEZ. So feel free to do the 'pushing' when the time is ripe.

Taiwan gets barred from Jakarta defense summit

Fri, Mar 22, 2013

Indonesian Major General Syaiful Anwar, who chaired the organizing committee for the JIDD, was quoted by the Financial Times as saying that the Chinese embassy in Jakarta had filed a verbal complaint with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and “asked us to discourage them [the Taiwanese delegates]” from attending. . . .

Representative to Indonesia Andrew Hsia (夏立言) said Taipei was “not pleased” with the incident.

“This [conference] is about security in the region [and] certainly we are one of the major players in the region,” Hsia was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

According to the JIDD’s Web site, attendees at the summit included US Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter, as well as defense ministers and chiefs of the defense forces of more than 45 countries.

A source in Taipei familiar with the matter said Taiwan hoped to hold sideline meetings with delegates from the US and the Philippines to discuss security issues, the newspaper said.

The Coast Guard Administration has budgeted Tw$19 million ($640,000) to evaluate the project, which is part of its efforts to boost defense capabilities in the disputed area this year.

"The fund will mainly be used to do an environmental impact study near Taiping Island," a coast guard official told AFP.

The fortified island, under Taiwan's control, is the largest in the disputed South China Sea area.

The United Evening News said the expanded pier would allow port calls by the coast guard's 2,000-tonne frigates. The current pier provides facilities only to small patrol boats.

Taiwan built a 1,150-meter (3,800-foot) runway on Taiping in mid-2006, despite protests from the other countries with claims to the disputed island group.

Spratly Islands pier may be completed ahead of schedule
CNA 2014-07-13

A pier currently being built by Taiwan on Taiping Island, the largest of the Spratly Islands in the disputed South China Sea, is likely to be completed before the scheduled date in late 2015, a source said Saturday.

According to the source, production of the 11 caissons needed for the project is progressing faster than expected. As a result, the caissons - with a total weight of 30,000 tons - will be shipped to Taiping Island in November, seven months ahead of schedule, the source said.

The ship carrying the goods will be escorted by several military frigates to protect its safety, the source said. Similar action was taken in May when heavy machinery was being shipped to the island for the pier project.

When it is completed, the pier will be able to accommodate 3,000-ton naval frigates and coastguard cutters.

At present, big ships have to drop anchor some distance from shore and rely on smaller vessels for loading and unloading, which also involves dredging the harbor to increase its depth to 14 meters, the bureau said.

In addition, work is being carried out on a 1,300-meter runway to improve rain water drainage, repair landing lights and build a refueling facility, according to the bureau. The total cost of the project is estimated at NT$3.3 billion (US$110 million).
