Taiwanese group intervenes in PH arbitral case vs China
By: Greg Torode and J.R. Wu, Reuters
May 10, 2016 10:59 AM

HONG KONG/TAIPEI -- A Taiwanese group has intervened in the Philippines' international court case against China's claims in the South China Sea, pressing Taipei's position that Taiwan is entitled to a swathe of the disputed waterway as an economic zone.

The unusual submission has emerged just as judges at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague are poised to rule on the Philippines' landmark case, brought under the United Nations' Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The move could delay the judges' ruling, now expected within two months, and potentially complicates worsening territorial disputes roiling across the vital trade route.

Taiwan group insists UN court has no jurisdiction over PHL case vs. China
Published June 4, 2016 12:28pm

With the final ruling of the Philippines' case against China over disputed territories South China Sea expected this month, a Taiwanese group issued a statement condemning the Hague Court's pushing of the arbitration case.

"As a national academic organization in the law of the sea field, we have been deeply shocked by the Arbitral Tribunal's acts of pushing forward the arbitration and making the award," the Taiwan-based Chinese Society of the Law of Sea (CSLOS) said in a statement.

The group, which intervened in the arbitral case early May, said it is concerned about the negative impact that the award may have on the international maritime rule of law.

Taiwan 'won't recognize' any Chinese air defense zone over South China Sea
By: J.R. Wu, Reuters
June 6, 2016 6:49 PM

TAIPEI - Taiwan's new defense minister said on Monday the island would not recognize any air defense zone declared by China over the South China Sea, as the island's top security agency warned such a move could usher in a wave of regional tension.

US officials have expressed concern that an international court ruling expected in coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its South China Sea claims could prompt Beijing to declare an air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, as it did over the East China Sea in 2013.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims, as well as close military ties with Washington.

"We will not recognize any ADIZ by China," Taiwan Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan told lawmakers in parliament.

Taiwanese navy accidentally fires supersonic missile, killing one fisherman

A Republic of China Navy (RoCN) Ching Chiang-class patrol ship mistakenly launched a Hsiung Feng III supersonic missile on 1 July, killing the captain of a fishing boat and injuring three crew members. The captain was from Taiwan, and the injured crew members were from the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam, Chen Chu, the mayor of Taiwan's southern city Kaohsiung wrote on social media.

The Hsiung Feng III ripped through the fishing boat, which was registered in Kaohsiung, but did not immediately explode or destroy the vessel, said a RoCN spokesperson. The anti-ship missile landed in waters some 40 n miles northwest of southern Taiwan's Zuoying Navy Base and did not cross the median line of the Taiwan Strait, the spokesperson added.

The incident with the SSM hitting the fishing boat was already reported in the ROC military thread in the World Military Current Events section.

Taiwan sends warship to South China Sea after rejecting tribunal ruling
By: Agence France-Presse
July 13, 2016 12:36 PM

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Taiwanese warship set sail for the South China Sea on Wednesday "to defend Taiwan's maritime territory," a day after an international tribunal ruled China has no historic rights in the waterway and undermined Taipei's claims to islands there.

President Tsai Ing-wen rallied troops on the deck of the frigate, saying Taiwanese were determined to "defend their country's rights," before the warship headed for Taiwan-controlled Taiping island in the Spratly island chain from the southern city of Kaohsiung.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled Tuesday that China has no historic rights to its claimed "nine-dash line" and that it had violated the Philippines' sovereign rights in the exclusive economic zone.

Taiwan asks Google to blur images showing new South China Sea facilities
By: Reuters
September 21, 2016 6:21 PM

TAIPEI - Taiwan's defense ministry said on Wednesday it is asking Google to blur satellite images showing what experts say appear to be new military installations on Itu Aba, Taipei's sole holding in the disputed South China Sea.

The revelation of new military-related construction could raise tensions in the contested waterway, where China's building of airstrips and other facilities has worried other claimants and the United States.

The images seen on Google Earth show four three-pronged structures sitting in a semi-circle just off the northwestern shoreline of Itu Aba, across from an upgraded airstrip and recently constructed port that can dock 3,000-ton frigates.

Taiwan says it plans rescue drills in South China Sea this month | interaksyon - November 22, 2016
Quote:

aiwan's coastguard has said it plans to hold rescue drills in waters around Taipei's sole territorial holding in the disputed South China Sea at the end of this month, and that the drills could involve its navy.

The exercises to be held around Itu Aba, known by Taiwan as Taiping, would include drills in rescuing shipwrecked personnel, the coastguard said. More details would be released later, it said in a statement on its website late on Sunday.

"Currently the navy regularly patrols near Taiping Island. We don't rule out the navy playing a supporting role in future humanitarian rescue drills being held near Taiping," the Coast Guard Administration said in the statement.

Beijing untypically quiet on Taiwan drills in South China Sea
By: J.R. Wu, Reuters
November 30, 2016 8:25 PM

ITU ABA, SOUTH CHINA SEA - Taiwan held rescue drills on Tuesday off the coast of its sole outpost in the Spratly Islands of the South China Sea, but the biggest claimant in the disputed waters kept uncharacteristically quiet.

China and self-governed Taiwan seldom see eye to eye, but in responding to Taipei's latest assertion of sovereignty over Itu Aba, Beijing has avoided the harsh language it often directs at other claimants to the busy waterway.

China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei claim parts or all of the energy-rich South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade passes annually.

Taiwan navy, air force to train in disputed South China Sea
By: Reuters
March 2, 2017 7:17 PM

TAIPEI - Taiwan's navy will step up regular patrols around the South China Sea and conduct joint training with the air force in response to China's growing military power in the disputed waterways, the island's defense minister said on Thursday.

Beijing, which claims almost all the South China Sea, has regularly flown military jets over the waters and recently sailed its first aircraft carrier around Taiwan in what it called routine drills.

"Looking ahead at the transformation of China's strategy and its investment in new weapons equipment, our military will practise new reforms in our training," Taiwan Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan told a parliamentary session.

Taiwan sends aircraft to shadow Chinese bomber planes
Jess Macy Yu, Reuters

Posted at May 25 2018 11:38 PM

TAIPEI - Taiwan's air force scrambled aircraft on Friday as Chinese bombers flew around the self-ruled island, just a few hours after Taiwan vowed not to be cowed having lost another diplomatic ally amid growing Chinese pressure.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue and a potential dangerous military flashpoint. China claims the island as its sacred territory and has vowed not to allow any attempts at what it views as Taiwan separatism.

Tension between democratic Taiwan and its big neighbour has increased in recent months, with China suspicious the administration of President Tsai Ing-wen wants to push for the island's formal independence.
