Washington, June 27 (CNA) Taiwan is being cautious in its handling of issues related to the disputed South China Sea, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday. The United States has discussed such issues with Taiwan, said Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, at a question and answer session after delivering a keynote speech at a seminar on territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Through such discussions, the U.S. has come to understand that Taiwan is being "very, very careful" on South China Sea issues, whether in public or in private, Campbell said. more: http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Det...ID=201206280025 |

Taiwan mulls over extending runway in Spratlys Published on Jul 15, 2012 TAIPEI (AFP) - Taiwan is considering extending the runway on the contested Spratly island in a move that could provoke fresh tensions in the heavily disputed South China Sea, media reported on Sunday. If approved, the project would extend by 500m the runway on Taiping Island, the largest in the disputed waters and some 1,376km from Taiwan, the Liberty Times said. more: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/A...ory_822551.html |

PH recognizes and respects islands properties that is "LEGALLY" owned by other countries. PH is not greedy to get what is not ours. We only fight for our right. PH recognizes and respects Taiwan's sovereignty on their own parcel of island in the Spratly's. They have the rights to develop their own areas. China's greed is claiming ALL islands that are LEGALLY owned by several countries, and they're doing this by force. |

But if I'm not mistaken, we are officially claiming the entire Spratlys archipelago. |

Mon, Jul 30, 2012 By J. Michael Cole / Staff reporter Taiwan and China should jointly exploit the sea environment around Taiping Island (太平島) and cooperate in defending the area against aggression, a former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator and CPC Corp, Taiwan (CPC) board director said in Shanghai last week, adding fuel to an already tense situation in the South China Sea. Chiu Yi (邱毅), the firebrand former legislator who was appointed to the board of the state-owned oil company earlier this month, made the remarks on the sidelines of the “cross-strait economic interaction and new opportunities” conference at Jiaotong University in Shanghai last week. xxx Calling Vietnam the “greatest threat” to the potentially energy-rich area, Chiu called for joint exploration of oil and natural gas fields in the area, adding that the military forces on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should join hands in the defense of the area from aggression. xxx Taiwan, one of the six claimants in disputed areas of the South China Sea, has control of Taiping Island, the largest in the Spratlys (南沙島), where it completed a 1,150m airstrip in 2008. According to recent reports, the National Security Council is exploring new measures to strengthen Taiwan’s claims to the island, including the extension of the runway by between 300m and 500m to accommodate larger aircraft. Taiwan is also building a 7m-high tactical air navigation (TACAN) facility on the island to facilitate instrument landing and will deploy anti-aircraft guns and mortars next month. The Coast Guard Administration has been in charge of defending the area since 2000. Continue reading |

Everyone should keep an eye or two on Taiwan. After every election-cycle, pro re-unification factions gets a hold. IMHO, sooner or later Taiwan will choose to re-unify with mainland China. Trust no one. |

Beware, the natural gas oil field in northeast of Luzon in what they are aiming for. Tiawan and China will start making up a new boundary which will include Babuyan and Batanes Islands and a major part of the vast nat. gas oil field of the said area. That's the southern straight Taiwan is referring to. The Phil. need to get those warships and warbirds asap because those Chinks are encroaching aggressively. And to think Taiwan still call themselves American allies, and play both sides of the alliances in oil and nat gas monopoly. What we have now is plain and simple looting. I think even if the Phil were to only rely on land missile to fight, they should do so. The more passive the Phil. is the more water territory it loses. It has no choice but to act because it will only get worst. I think the president should make a bold military reponse statement. |

all the more that we really need to strengthen the AFP. the navy needs more big warships to guard and patrol, and respond to any situation in waters around the archipelago, IMO ideal would be at least three well-armed diesel-engine fast frigates for each of the major islands, and at least two squadrons of state of the art multirole jet fighters. the AFP capability upgrade should not stop with the term of PNoy, it should be continuous. we don't know who will succeed PNoy but I can say that my APO brod VP Binay will not in any way harm the military modernization if he becomes the next president. |

I agree with you guys Wily n Goose! It seems Taiwan maybe playing a different game and just imagine how much US made firepower are in their disposal, if and when that day comes, "US just shot themselves to the foot", at the end of the day what ever happens blood is thicker than water for they are all related, all came from one tree, one root. Come to think of it.. It's basically the same with the Philippines right now, as to why just a Passive approach towards something that can spell our Country's doom if we don't really, "I mean really prepare" for the worse. The Philippines and Vietnam are facing the same threats from China, actually ours is much worse, but look at how Vietnam prepares, look at how Vietnam stands firm against China, can you guys get the Picture???
