Russia to Go Ahead With Lavina Amphibious Assault Ship Project, Preliminary Design Completed

The Krylov State Research Center completed the preliminary design of the versatile amphibious assault ship for the Russian Navy, the center’s executive director, Mikhail Zagorodnikov, told TASS on Thursday. He also said there is "no doubt" the ship will be developped. The Lavina (Avalanche) project was first unveiled during the ARMY-2015 defense exhibiton.

"Krylov Central Scientific Research Institute is developing an alternative to the two Mistral LHDs. Avalanche will have a displacement of 24,000 tons, even more than the French ship" - a spokesman said at the time.

Krylov: Russian Navy needs four general-purpose LHD amphibious assault ships

The Russian Navy is in need of four versatile amphibious assault ships, of which one is needed for the standing naval force in the Mediterranean, Yuri Yeryomin, chief, Military-Technical Cooperation Dept., Krylov State Research Center, believes.

"The Northern Fleet needs a ship like that, and the Pacific Fleet needs two. Given the growing importance of the Mediterranean basin, where we have a standing naval force, one ship should be afforded to the Black Sea Fleet, even though she is unnecessary to the fleet itself. There is no sense in building a ship in the class for the Baltic Fleet either," Yeryomin said at the Army 2016 forum.

The Krylov Center has worked out the concept of the Priboi amphibious landing ship with an estimated displacement of 23,000 tons. The ship is to carry 900 Marines with their kit and an air wing of 16 assault helicopters.

Russia will certainly use the "free" Mistral tech for these new Lavina class LHDs they're building.

More about the aborted Mistral deal at this other thread, which has been moved away from this section since those 2 Mistrals are now in Egyptian service:

He Who Laughs Last, Laughs Best: Russia Ended Up Getting Mistral Tech for Free

The Russian-Egyptian deal on the sale of Ka-52K attack helicopters has reportedly reached the final stretch. Talks on the price of the choppers, to be used aboard Egypt's Mistral amphibious assault ships, are expected to begin later this month. Military expert Alexander Sitnikov explains how Russia ended up winning on the Mistral deal after all.

Analysts consider the Ka-52K Katran naval attack helicopters to be the optimal choice for Egypt's Mistrals because they were specifically designed to be carried aboard the French-made amphibious assault ships. French shipbuilders had built the two Mistral ships for Russia, but the deal fell through in 2015 amid deteriorating relations and pressure on Paris from Washington.

France agreed to sell its two formerly Russia-bound Mistrals to Egypt for €950 million ($1.06 billion) instead, and returned Russia's deposit on the vessels.

Nevskoe Design Bureau Proposing LPD and LHD Designs to Russian Navy

Posted On Friday, 06 July 2018 09:22

Nevskoe Design Bureau offered the Russian Navy a modular landing helicopter-carrying dock ship (DVKD) with a displacement of close to 15 thousand tons and a universal landing ship (UDK) of 30 thousand tons, the annual statement of the company said.

"This year, design bureaus will start developing these ships’ project. On completion of design, we expect to lay down this ship at the Yantar shipyard in a mere couple of years. In 2021 the construction will begin," he said.

Bursuk specified that this ship would be of the same size as the large landing ship Ivan Gren, but have new armament and military equipment. Also, its seaworthiness will be improved.
