US Downgrades Thailand on Aviation Safety
Civil aviation body goes to Category 2 for the first time in nearly two decades.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded Thailand’s safety rating Tuesday after its civil aviation body failed to conform to international standards.

According to a statement by the FAA, Thailand’s Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) went from Category 1 to Category 2 for the first time in nearly two decades because it “does not comply” with international safety standards. The downgrade means that Thai airlines will not be allowed to establish or expand services to the United States either directly or as code-share partners.

While the FAA did not explicitly elaborate on the specifics of Thailand’s deficiencies in its statement, it said that a Category 2 designation meant that Bangkok either lacked the regulations necessary to oversee air carriers or that the DCA “is deficient in one or more areas,” which include technical expertise, trained personnel, record-keeping or inspection procedures.
