AFP: No stopping PH construction on Pag-asa island
Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN News

Posted at Aug 29 2017 09:39 PM

MANILA- Despite China's opposition, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said construction work being undertaken by the military on Pag-asa island in the West Philippine Sea will continue.

AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Año on Tuesday said there is no reason to stop the construction and improvement of Philippine facilities on the island since these do not violate the declaration on the conduct of parties in the disputed waters.

"Tutuloy natin 'yun (construction). Wala naman sa violation... nung Declaration ng Code of Conduct yan. You can improve the islands, reefs, shoals that you are presently occupying," he said.

Philippines upgrades military facilities on Pag-asa Island
Reuters

Posted at Nov 07 2017 11:44 PM

MANILA - The Philippines has started upgrading military facilities on the biggest features it occupies in the disputed South China Sea, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Tuesday, asserting Manila's claims in the strategic waterway.

Lorenzana said a contractor was building a beach ramp on Thitu Island, locally known as Pag-asa (hope), the largest of nine features the Philippines holds in the Spratly islands.

"While construction is ongoing, albeit intermittently, depending on good weather, we expect its completion by early 2018," Lorenzana said, adding the monsoon rains have been hampering the building of the beach ramp.

"No construction can proceed without a good beaching ramp."

The sandbar project (fishermen shelter) is different from the current beach ramp construction that are being built on Pag-Asa island and is scheduled to be completed in early 2018 so that larger naval and civilian vessels can offload construction materials ...

Palace vows Duterte will visit Pag-asa Island
Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News

MANILA - Malacañang said Friday President Rodrigo Duterte will visit Pag-asa Island in the South China Sea within his term, as the chief executive continues to reap criticism for his response to Chinese aggressiveness in the disputed waters.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said there is no exact date yet for the President’s visit but he said the chief executive will visit the island within his term.

“Tingin ko po darating at darating ang panahon na pupuntahan ni Presidente ang Pag-asa Island. Ang pagbisita po ng isang Presidente sa Pag-asa ‘yan po ay ebidensya ng soberenya at kung hindi man ngayon gagawin 'yan ng Presidente tingin ko bago matapos ang termino niya,” Roque told reporters in a video interview.

Good. Looks like the pushback is bearing fruit.

PHILIPPINES LAUNCHES SPRATLY RUNWAY REPAIRS

Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative

Satellite imagery from May 17 shows two barges anchored just off the western edge of the Thitu Island runway, which collapsed into the sea years ago. It appears that a grab dredger, consisting of a crane with a clamshell bucket, is installed on the smaller barge to the west, while the other carries a backhoe. Loose sediment from dredging can be seen in the water around the two barges and freshly-deposited sand is visible along the northern edge of the runway.

This method of dredging is similar to that used by Vietnam at several of its outposts in recent years. While still harmful to the marine environment, it affects surrounding reefs at a smaller scale and is far less environmentally destructive than the suction cutter dredging undertaken by China, which destroyed thousands of acres of reef from late 2013 to early 2017.

SSVs heading for Pag-Asa? Manila Bulletin

So far we are still repairing the landing dock of our LSD or Dock landing ship. Without that we cannot bring materials,” Lorenzana told reporters.

“It’s going along. They said last month the landing dock is 40 percent finish. It started construction late last year,” he said.

Lorenzana, however, said that construction might be interrupted especially in July, August, September, and October due to the rainy season. ...

“No, no. There are no, there were no harassment. In fact, we already brought a crane there. The beaching ramp is almost finished. Once that is finished we can bring in more construction materials, the gravel, the sand, and the cement because there are no sources there, and these materials are coming still from the mainland,” he said.

Repair? Means there is a landing dock? Once repaired I dont think the ssv could dock in it but rather its landing ships. If the ssv could dock, sure ly smaller could do so too. I think is where landing ships then landed when it brpught equipment then. But this is just me
