Can't tell for sure about the 20mm, but it's definitely not a 40mm (too small), and the 20mm is the only other gun of that type in the Marines inventory. Numerous reports have also said they have 20mm guns on the island. (or course the old, grey rusty one seen in many pictures doesn't count: i don't think it works). Could be a .50 cal., but i don't think so. I wish they would station a helo and a coast guard patrol boat there. I think things will change after the World Court decision is issued. I can't wait. can't wait for the fireworks ?? :) me too The current defenses of Pagasa island may be able to stop a recon or small unit raid, but not a large scale amphib landing with heavy gunfire support. AFAIK, due to resource limitations, rather than 'seriously' fortify the islands as taiwan has done to a certain degree, the AFP plan, at least in the recent past, would be to do a retrograde maneuver then come back with guns blazing with allied forces to destroy the occupier of the islands. Makes sense ? The reality is that those philippine-held islands and the bully fake islands are too small with no room to maneuver, essentially pinning defenders in fixed positions, and hence making these islands very vulnerable to surface and air attacks. The bully islands are only useful if and only if the OPFORs decide not to attack the islands in which case the bully will have accomplished its goal of constricting the sealanes. Therefore, the allied coalition will have no choice but to destroy these fake islands if the ITLOS ruling is specific that those islands are illegal under UNCLOS law. We will soon found out. I still think the covered guns are 20mm. They have pretty long barrels. I have also noted that at least one and possibly two LVT-6's on the island have been repainted and the brush around them has been cleared, although it doesn't look like they have been moved. It would be nice if they were operational, but I think they just spruced them up to keep the Chinese guessing. There would actually be some difficulties invading the Island. The surrounding reef would force the use of very shallow draft vessels or hovercraft, and or helicopters, which would be somewhat vulnerable to even small arms fire. Not long ago I also saw pictures of what appeared to be a newly constructed concrete command bunker. I don't think it would be a walkover. |

The defenders should develop a rapid deployment force consisting of a stationary battery of light anti ship missiles and another battery of point defense SAM. This would quickly be airlifted if the threat of invasion is imminent. Compared to frigates or multi role fighter jets, these missile batteries won't be as expensive. These batteries can be considered as interim defense measure that would enable the island to defend itself while frigates and fighters are not yet available. iMHO |

Been hearing this sort of news for years. It's high time they do it. However, it begs the biggest question: - Does this come with China's blessing? |

They should stop announcing stuff like this. Just complete it and use it, just like what China is doing. China's blessing? That's what we may never know |

Agree with you totally. And also, I always get somewhat pissed when I read these keywords: "plans" "mulls" "deciding" |

IMHO: If PH is developing a port, then might as well station one (if not all) of the MPAC Mk3s there (because we don't want to sacrifice bigger ships or even the Shaldags just in case things get dicey). That would give PH a token "littoral" force. Preferably, PH could install C-Star launchers in Pag-asa, but if that's too much to ask for - then just the Spike NLOS would do. For SAMS - the RapidFire 40mm 6x6 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun missile system could very well cover both aid and ground. But of course - station a lot of grunts, so no infantry can sneak in. DIY-defense in 4 easy steps. LOL. |

Agreed. I would prefer: - "final stages of construction" - "finally started" - "completed" Edited by Hong Nam, Nov 19 2016, 03:31 PM.
