Philippines Restarting Upgrade of Airfield in Pagasa Island

http://www.update.ph/2016/04/philippines-restarting-upgrade-of-airfield-in-pagasa-island-report/4228

The Philippine Air Force has reportedly been transporting construction materials to Pagasa Island in West Philippine Sea. These materials include stones and sand, and various types of gasoline, Chinese news outlet China Daily reported citing an unidentified source. According to unnamed source in the report, transport of materials to Pagasa Island is an indication that Philippines is preparing to restart upgrading the Rancudo Airfield in Pagasa Island. This reported move by the Philippines was criticized by China. “The Philippines keeps saying that the unilaterally initiated and forced arbitration case is not to resolve issues concerning territorial sovereignty, and plays hypocrite to announce a suspension to the construction on Zhongye Dao (Pagasa Island). Yet what we see is that the Philippines keeps flagrantly upgrading the airport on its illegally occupied Zhongye Dao of the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands) from China, attempting to further extend its illegal occupation of Chinese territory and “legalize” its occupation through the arbitration tribunal,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said April 12 in a press conference.

needs to be verified since the original source is the china daily.. Now,if this is true, I wonder if the Philippine government already has an idea or inkling of the areas to be awarded by the ITLOS tribunal, hence, the re-start of the runway repair. For those following the ITLOS case, it is widely expected that a final ruling will be issued by next month more or less.

Residents of Philippine-occupied Pag-asa Island in the West Philippine Sea reportedly confirmed that Chisese vessels are regularly releasing chemicals to destroy the corals and marine species around the island.

According to Kalayaan ATIN ITO Facebook page, “China is aggressively removing economic activities of the civilian community at the Kalayaan Island Group to drive away civilians and isolate the Islands.”

Kalayaan Island residents boot out mayor

MANILA, Philippines – By a margin of 83 votes, two-term Mayor Eugenio Bito-onon Jr. of the municipality of Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in the Spratlys lost his bid for re-election in a three-cornered fight in the May 9 elections.

“I lost to my opponent by a wide margin,” Bito-onon, a candidate of the ruling Liberal Party, told The STAR by telephone.

He said he is now preparing to turn over the reins of the island town to winner Roberto del Mundo of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

Del Mundo is a former chairman of Barangay Pag-Asa, the biggest island in the KIG, the Philippine-occupied islands in the Spratlys.

I have been wondering about that myself Pachador. The weapon is painted like the M57 recoilless rifle used by the Philippine Marines, but it does not appear to be the same weapon.

Pachador, I did some research, and the weapon in the video is almost certainly a 40mm Bofors gun. See the following image. http://media.gettyimages.com/photos/philippine-marines-adjust-antiaircraft-guns-deployed-near-the-site-of-picture-id497052900

This makes sense, as many past reports have mentioned that there are 40mm Bofors guns on the island. As you can also see from the video, they have 2 20mm Oerlikon guns mounted at either end of the field adjacent to the runway. In another video, the old LVT-6 on the island has been repainted, and appears to be in good shape, but I'm not sure if it is operational.

if your referring to the gun in camouflage netting, the barrel though is not flared at the end like a 40mm bofors and second, the barrel seems shorter. its more like the gun from a salvaged lvth6
which video are you referring to with respect to the 20mms at the runways ?

I am referring to the gun under the camoflage. If you look at the picture of the 40mm bofors gun I posted, the painted camoflage is identical, and the 2 tubes seen in the video match the 2 tubes in the base of the bofors gun, particularly the hole at the end of each tube. Please compare the picture and the video. I don't believe you can see the barrel of the gun in the video because it is camoflaged and in the shadows. The 20mm oerlikon is seen earlier in the video, and is covered with a tarp.

I think your right, I was too fixated on the tubes with the holes that i didnt notice the bottom outline of the gun barrel above those 2 tubes. as far as the gun covered with plastic tarpaulin, dont you think the barrel seems a little long to be a 20mm, it seems more like a 40mm, plus the squarish bulk covered by the tarpaulin seems more like the mount of a 40mm.
