I don't think the Americans are itching for war. |

Well, the planned Sansha city administration in Woody island, Paracel islands plus the planned military garrison is very provoking to us but esp. to Vietnam since the Paracel is disputed between China and Vietnam. Sad to say but I really think there will be a limited shooting war bet. Vietnam and China. |

^ Likely. China could forcefully takeover Vietnam's Spratlys possessions just like what it did to the Paracels in the 70s. Despite incursions into PH-claimed territory, China has been more aggressive in Vietnamese-held territory like opening up exploration blocks in areas within Vietnam's EEZ, sending fishing fleet in mostly Vietnamese part of the Spratlys & establishing Sansha in the Paracels which were Vietnam's. Considering that Vietnam has a more modern fleet than Philippines. And yet they can bully Vietnam, what more to Philippines? We can file tons of "diplomatic protest" but that will just be ignored. |

So what are you recommending in lieu of diplomatic protests? Japan has a much more technologically advanced military but China is still bullying it over the Senkaku Islands. |

As I've already pointed out before, China may go to war over SCS/WPS IF they've weighed the claim to be worth the war. Same with Germany, Japan and Italy. They were at the height of their economic prosperity yet still they choose to be belligerents. Germany over Saarland, Czechoslovakia and Austria; Italy over Eritrea and Libya; and Japan over Manchuria/Manchukuo. Why can't some guys here see why China is spending billions of dollars to modernize and expand it's military forces??? |

Is someone here disagreeing with you? That's why the US is moving 60% of its military assets over here, other Asian countries from India to Indonesia are also ramping its defense spending and why despite our limited resources the government is making efforts to improve the capability of the AFP. |

If one Chinese leader allowed the deaths of millions of people during the Cultural Revolution, why not? We may never know if China's leaders are secretly Maoists inside. On the other hand, we might be wrong too, but I'm leaning more on the former. |

Agreed with Ice & SR, China could very well take on Vietnam in a punitive engagement sooner rather than later but not against us, at least not in the next ten years, unless our government does something foolish and fires on a Chinese vessel first. Not until such time when China feels it has gained parity with US forces in the region and will try to tempt fate by violently finding out whether the PH-US MDT is a solid agreement. |

Anyone who comes to a counter-insurgency thinking it`s about killing terrorists is missing the boat. It`s really about winning the people. You can kill all the terrorists but then you`ve pissed people off and created 100 more. -Col. Bradley Becker | |
