Japan is already in our corner. They're moving away from nuclear energy in favor of natural gas and it's in their interest to keep potential sources of supply in friendly hands. Public opinion worldwide is also turning against oil. Libya or even Syria won't be the end of it: there will be instability in that region for years as the autocrats try to cling to power.

The discoveries in the WPS come at the right time. The Philippines may be at a turning point in its history. P-Noy should stand his ground and finally realize what his parents laid the foundation for.
God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.

If the GOI decide to go ahead with the oil exploration in SCS, Indian Navy will have no other choice but to deploy some warships from eastern naval command in SCS otherwise PLAN will harass them day and night. Vietnam is very much prepared to give berthing rights to Indian ships so lets wait and watch.

From what I have been hearing from my Russian friends the Vietnamese Kilo class submarines are far more capable than the Chinese Kilo subs that Russia supplied to China.

Russia is taking a balance approach towards China, being that China is one of Russia's biggest trading partners. Gazprom has been active in the WPS as they are increasing their influence in the energy market.

Russia is also reinforcing its Pacific fleet in the Russian far east, also add that Russia now is building two new shipyards in the Far East so that to potentially produce warships in the Russian Pacific Fleet and construct oil and gas tankes as well as offshore drilling platforms like the one they have in the Arctic and Barents Sea.

Armed conflict possible in South China Sea: ICG

MANILA — Tensions over competing claims in the South China Sea could escalate into conflict, with an arms build-up among rival nations raising the temperature, an international think tank warned Tuesday.

Prospects of solving the disputes "seem to be diminishing" after a recent failure by the 10-nation ASEAN grouping to hammer out a "code of conduct" that would govern actions in the sea, the International Crisis Group (ICG) said.

"Without a consensus on a resolution mechanism, tensions in the South China Sea can easily spill over into armed conflict," warned Paul Quinn-Judge, the ICG's program director for Asia.

"As long as ASEAN fails to produce a cohesive South China Sea policy, a binding set of rules on the handling of disputed claims cannot be enforced."

China claims sovereignty over nearly all of the sea, which is believed to hold vast amounts of oil and gas, is one of the region's most important fishing grounds and is home to shipping lanes that are vital to global trade.
