Report: Chinese Navy Warship Rammed Two Vietnamese Fishing Vessels By: Sam LaGrone - USNI August 7, 2015 An undated photo of a Chinese Type Yuting II Type 072A tank landing ship (LST). PLAN PhotoA People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) amphibious warship allegedly rammed two Vietnamese fishing vessels operating near the disputed Spratly Islands in July, according to local press cited in an Office of Naval Intelligence threat to shipping report. According to accounts of the fisherman, reported in the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, about 15 nautical miles off the western coast of the Spratlys on July 21 “a strange iron-clad Chinese ship numbered 994 suddenly appeared and approached [the fishing vessel] sounding its horn.” The ship then sprayed the vessels with water cannon and precipitated a 30-minute chase. “In order to avoid a possible collision, I tried to steer my boat away, but the strange ship still chased after and then rammed it on the right side,” captain Nguyen Nhat Ngoc said to the paper. |

Is conflict between these neighbours inevitable? Perhaps if China continues moving its oil rigs closer to territory more heavily guarded by Vietnam. Diplomat

Vietnam demands that China remove oil rig (Associated Press) | Updated January 20, 2016 - 7:19pm HANOI — Vietnam said China has moved an oil rig into disputed waters in the South China Sea, in a possible repeat of a 2014 stand-off between the communist neighbors. Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said in a statement posted on the ministry's website late Tuesday that Vietnam has raised concerns with China over the movement of Haiyang Shiyou oil rig, and has demanded that China stop any drilling and remove the rig from the area where the two countries' continental shelves overlap and have not been demarcated. "Vietnam demands that China not conduct any drilling activities and withdraw Hai Duong 981 oil rig from this area," he said, using the Vietnamese name for the oil rig. http://www.philstar.com/world/2016/01/20/1544610/vietnam-demands-china-remove-oil-rig |

China deploys missiles on disputed South China Sea island - report Agence France-Presse February 17th, 2016 WASHINGTON, United States - China has deployed a surface-to-air missile system on one of its contested islands in the South China Sea, a report said Tuesday just as President Barack Obama called for “tangible steps” to reduce tensions in the region. Images from civilian firm ImageSat International show two batteries of eight missile launchers and a radar system arrived within the past week on Woody Island, part of the Paracels chain. The report on the missile batteries came as Obama wrapped up a two-day Southeast Asian summit in California where leaders voiced concern over Beijing’s military build-up in the strategic and resource-rich area. There goes the confidence building process. No one can simply trust China to do what it says. IMO, they need to be embarrassed again one way or another. Not necessarily force vs force. There are other ways.

China sends missiles to contested South China Sea island - Taiwan February 17, 2016 By J.R. WU AND ANDREA SHALAL, Reuters Taiwan defense ministry spokesman Major General David Lo told Reuters the missile batteries had been set up on Woody Island. The island is part of the Paracels chain, under Chinese control for more than 40 year but also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam. The missiles arrived at Woody Island over the past week, Fox News said. According to the images, a beach on the island was empty on Feb. 3, but the missiles were visible by Feb. 14, it reported. A US official told Fox News the imagery viewed appears to show the HQ-9 air defense system, which has a range of 125 miles (200 km) and would pose a threat to any airplanes, civilian or military, flying close by. Asked about the report, Bill Urban, a Pentagon spokesman, said: "While I cannot comment on matters related to intelligence, we do watch these matters very closely." - Reuters GMA News ![]() The Hong Qi 9 or HQ-9 is a Chinese air defense missile system. It is broadly equivalent to the Russian S-300. Some sources report that the HQ-9 was developed with Russian assistance and benefits from Russian technology transfers. It has been report that it was adopted by the Chinese armed forces in 1997. Its export version, the FD-2000, has been exported to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Pakistan and Turkey are negotiating with China to purchase this air defense system. The HQ-9 can intercept various aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles, air-to-ground missiles, guided bombs and theater ballistic missiles at medium- to long ranges. The HQ-9 surface-to-air missile system was developed much later than the Russian S-300 and incorporates advancements in the electronics. Notably it employs newer computing technology. The HQ-9 uses two-stage missiles with thrust vector control. Missiles have a range of 125 km against aircraft and 15-25 km against cruise and ballistic missiles. Missiles can reach aircraft at an altitude of 27 km and cruise and ballistic missiles at an altitude of 15-25 km. The missile has inertial guidance with mid-course update and terminal active radar homing. This air defense system can perform air defense engagement in a massive air raid under intense electronic jamming. The HQ-9 launcher is based on Taian TA5380 8x8 high mobility chassis. Each launcher has 4 missiles in individual containers. Missiles are launcher vertically. A battery of HQ-9 consists of 8 TEL vehicles with missiles, mobile engagement radar based on Taian TA5570 10x10 chassis, engagement radar based on a North-Benz ND1260 series truck chassis, command and control vehicle, reloading vehicles and various support vehicles. The basic formation can be expanded into a larger formation. The HQ-9 battery can employ a wide range of radars, both search, surveillance, acquisition, tracking and fire control. Military Today |
