China said it summoned Vietnam's ambassador Thursday and strongly protested a law adopted by the Vietnamese parliament that places the disputed Spratly and Paracel islands under Hanoi's sovereignty. China and Vietnam, as well as other neighbouring nations, are locked in long-standing territorial disputes over the South China Sea, including the mineral-rich Spratly and Paracel islands. "The... actions by the Vietnamese side are illegal and invalid. China expresses its strong protest and firm opposition," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters. "The Vietnamese unilateral actions ... complicate and magnify the issue. China will resolutely safeguard territorial sovereignty." Hong said Vietnam's ambassador to China Nguyen Van Tho was summoned to the foreign ministry Thursday and told of Beijing's displeasure. According to Vietnamese parliamentarian Duong Trung Quoc, the legislation is a first for Hanoi on what it calls the East Sea. "The adoption of this law on the sea today is very important for Vietnam," he told AFP. "It helps solidify both how Vietnam will implement its sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly Islands and its international commitments." more: http://www.zamboangatoday.ph/index.php/ins...to-islands.html |

China may go to war with Vietnam to shore up support: Russian media Staff Reporter 2012-07-17 08:03 (GMT+8) An article published in a Russian newspaper suggests that China's government will launch a war against Vietnam over the South China Sea, both to establish sovereignty over disputed islands and consolidate the support of its public. While both Beijing and Hanoi are inviting foreign companies to explore the rich natural resources beneath the South China Sea, Moscow appears to have sided with Hanoi rather than Beijing. Russia's Gazprom, the largest natural gas extractor in the world, has signed a contract with the Vietnamese government to develop resources in disputed areas, triggering protests from Beijing. At the same time, Moscow has provided military assistance to Vietnam's armed forces, importing advanced weapons such as Su-30MK2 fighters, Gepard-class frigates and Yakhont anti-ship missiles. Russia has also supplied weapons to India, another of China's regional competitors, and took part in the RIMPAC joint naval exercises held by the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific. From the Russian point of view, China remains a much bigger threat than Vietnam or even the United States. Yet the article said that the Chinese government may launch a war against Vietnam simply to consolidate the rule of the Communist Party within the country, where leaders consistently worry about "social stability." The article said that China is now being isolated by nearly every capital in the region, where six parties claim sovereignty over all or part of the islands and reefs of the South China Sea. Roughly 30 Chinese fishing boats arrived at the disputed Spratly Islands on Sunday, under the protection of Fishery Administration Ship 301, reported China's state-run Xinhua news agency. This fleet consisted of a 3,000-tonne supply ship and 29 other vessels, and will spend the next five to 10 days near the waters of Yongshu Reef, known in English as Fiery Cross Reef. ^^I think China might also eventually use those so called "30 fishing vessels" as human shields as a last resort in case they got cornered somehow, if those boats are not laden with explosives and used as a weapon as well. |

Russia is right. China is far worse as a problem. Russia also realized the evil they created when they allowed joint development (which gave away their technological edge) on critical industries like aerospace, military technology and nuclear energy. It's not all too late. the ASEAN, the US, Australia, Japan, SK and India can refocus their investments to Russia as well. we should all support Russian economy too. Let china rot. |

another update India stands up to China on oil block India will remain a contender in the struggle for the South China Sea for two more years. State-owned ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) has decided to continue oil and gas exploration in the disputed offshore Block 128 despite Beijing's warnings that this infringes on Chinese territorial claims. "We have accepted the offer by PetroVietnam to extend our contract in Block 128 by a few more years," a senior OVL official said. The OVL decision, however, would parallel India's official position that China had no "legal basis" for its protests against OVL's exploration of that block. New Delhi has indicated it does not believe China's territorial claims stand up to international law. Government officials admit OVL's decision could aggravate relations between New Delhi and Beijing. It could also insert India into a widening political struggle over control of the South China Sea, pitting China against several Southeast Asian nations. http://www.hindustantimes.com/business-new...le1-890911.aspx |

Its easier to destroy China from within like what they did to Libya and what is happening to Syria. Especially with the brewing China economy slowing down. Reminds me of our situation with the MI/NPA rebels. Edited by paratorpe, Jul 21 2012, 09:32 AM.

Modernization should prioritize: Patrol Ships with air/sub/ship detection, fast & lightly armed for Navy. Surface Attack Aircraft with anti ship/sub attack capability for Airforce. SAM with Radars, Close AA battery capable of shooting ground targets too for Army. This triangle defense will work together and protect us from external threats. | |

Let us invite the Indians as well to drill in our own Blocks... allow some of their frigates along with our gunboats to protect our oil fields.. Purge a mutual defense agreement with the Indians as well with joint-development project on building Naval Ship building...

A 3-way consortium between Russia, India and Philippines is very amenable. These 2 will surely field their own ships to protect the oil/gas rigs. And I bet you, we can trust them more as well on fair sharing compared to China. |
