South China Sea: Vietnam And India Should Follow Duterte's Wisdom

Panos Mourdoukoutas , Contributor

(...SNIPPED)

In early July, Vietnam granted Indian oil firm ONGC Videsh a two-year extension to explore oil block 128, according to a Reuters report.

Vietnam and India’s challenge to China comes at a time when tensions between New Delhi and Beijing have flared on several fronts. In the Dokalam area of Sikkim, where India has been trying to block China’s efforts to build a road, and in reply Beijing has warned New Delhi that it risks suffering "greater losses" than 1962.

That challenge was short lived. Early this week, Vietnam announced that it will stop its oil exploration efforts, following a stark warning by Beijing that it will attack Vietnamese oil and gas bases.

Apparently, Vietnam and India need to learn from President Duterte’s wisdom. They should ask Beijing before they make any drilling plans in China’s “own sea.”

it is well known that beijing pays writers/journalists to write favorable stories about china. one way to find out is to track an author's articles published in the past, although if they are clever, they wont make their articles too propagandistic-sounding but instead insert 1 or 2 liners in favor of china. A good example is the one above.
on the other hands, its also possible that he is being sarcastic. only time will tell if one follows carefully someone's articles and postings to discern patterns or loyalties as well.

Vietnam, China avoid quarrel over South China Sea during visit
Reuters

Posted at Nov 13 2017 06:39 AM

MANILA - China and Vietnam avoided conflict over the South China Sea on Sunday when Chinese President Xi Jinping met Vietnam's General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, hours after US President Donald Trump offered to mediate maritime disputes.

Relations between Hanoi and Beijing have been particularly strained since July, when China put pressure on Vietnam to stop oil drilling in a disputed area in the South China Sea.

Vietnam's state television said the Chinese president had told the Vietnamese leader he wanted to work with Southeast Asian nations on a code of conduct in the sea. China's Xinhua news agency said China and Vietnam had agreed to properly handle maritime issues and strive to maintain peace and stability.

Vietnam asks China to withdraw military equipment from South China Sea
Reuters

Posted at May 09 2018 12:56 AM

HANOI - Vietnam requested on Tuesday that China withdraw military equipment from the South China Sea, following media reports this month that China had installed missiles there.

"Vietnam requests that China, as a large country, shows its responsibility in maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea," Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement, referring to the South China Sea.

The statement came after U.S. news network CNBC reported this month that China had installed anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three of its outposts in the South China Sea, citing sources with direct knowledge of U.S. intelligence reports.

Vietnam says Chinese bombers in disputed South China Sea increase tensions
Reuters

Posted at May 22 2018 06:43 AM

HANOI - Recent activity by China's strategic bombers in the South China Sea's Paracel Islands seriously violated Vietnam's sovereignty over the disputed territory, Vietnam's foreign ministry said on Monday.

China's air force said bombers such as the H-6K had landed and taken off from islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of training exercises last week.

The flights "increase tensions, cause regional instabilities and are not good for maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the East Sea," foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said in a statement, using the Vietnamese name for the South China Sea.

The Philippines also expressed "serious concerns" on Monday over the presence of the bombers in the area and its foreign ministry has taken "appropriate diplomatic action".

On the South China Sea, the DFA said the Philippine Delegation underscored that the deliberate and nuanced diplomacy by the Duterte Administration had lowered tensions in the region and resulted in clear economic gains for the Philippines in terms of access to marine resources, protection of the marine ecology, and the potential to explore oil and gas resources.

Drilling down: Risky hunt for oil in Vietnam's South China Sea blocks
James Pearson and Greg Torode, Reuters

HANOI/HONG KONG - Some oil blocks off Vietnam's sprawling coastline fall within an area of the South China Sea demarcated by China's "9-dash line", the basis for Beijing's controversial claims to most of the resource-rich waterway.

Last week, sources said Rosneft Vietnam BV, a unit of Russian state oil firm Rosneft, was concerned its recent drilling in one such block could upset Beijing.

Japan, Vietnam agree on maritime safety cooperation
(Associated Press) - June 1, 2018 - 3:00am
TOKYO (AP) — The leaders of Japan and Vietnam agreed Thursday to bolster cooperation in maritime safety and defense, and expressed shared concerns over China's growing activity in the South China Sea.

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed during talks in Tokyo to strengthen defense cooperation in areas including military training, equipment and technology.

Quang is in Japan on a state visit marking the 45th anniversary of the countries' diplomatic ties.

In a statement after their talks, they called for a non-militarization of the South China Sea and warned against any unilateral actions changing the status quo.

Vietnam asks Philippines, China to stop escalating tension in South China Sea
(philstar.com) - June 4, 2018 - 5:26pm

MANILA, Philippines — Vietnam called out the Philippines and China for further complicating the situation in the disputed features in the South China Sea, part of which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.

On Thursday, the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry asked the Philippines to stop its repairs of a collapsed runway on Pag-asa Island, the largest of the nine Manila-controlled features in the Spratlys Islands.

State-run Vietnam News Agency reported that the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry asked for restraint and compliance with the declaration of conduct in the South China Sea to prevent further escalation of tensions.
