Vietnam moves new rocket launchers into disputed South China Sea - sources

Foreign officials and military analysts believe the launchers form part of Vietnam's state-of-art EXTRA rocket artillery system recently acquired from Israel.

EXTRA rounds are highly accurate up to a range of 150 km (93 miles), with different 150 kg (330 lb) warheads that can carry high explosives or bomblets to attack multiple targets simultaneously. Operated with targeting drones, they could strike both ships and land targets.

That puts China's 3,000-metre runways and installations on Subi, Fiery Cross and Mischief Reef within range of many of Vietnam's tightly clustered holdings on 21 islands and reefs. ...

"When Vietnam acquired the EXTRA system, it was always thought that it would be deployed on the Spratlys...it is the perfect weapon for that," said Siemon Wezeman, a senior arms researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

:dunno: To think the Philippines came thisclose to getting these rockets. Link to another post

It seems that the current PH Administration are deliberately too distracted on Illegal Drug Wars, maybe part of China's Sun Tzu strategy..?

While other Asian Neighbouring Countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan are all visibly ratcheting up their Armed Forces Capabilities post Hague ITLOS ruling, the Philippines is just laid back in "siesta mode" sends a Senior Citizen as Emissary to China. I bet he's going to get a good deal for himself at the Country's expense again..... So, is the present any different from the rest???

Vietnam seeks support for 'maritime freedom'

HANOI - France and other countries should help to keep the peace in the disputed South China Sea, Vietnam's president told AFP Wednesday, as unease grows over China's increasingly muscular approach in the key waterway.

China claims most of the sea where it has built up reefs capable of hosting military equipment, sparking ire from competing claimants, including Vietnam, and raising fears of potential armed conflict.

Speaking to AFP ahead of a visit by French leader Francois Hollande next month, Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang said he hopes France and others will help to diffuse regional tensions in the waterway, which it calls the East Sea.

Despite this rhetoric the leaders in Hanoi are aware that costs of appeasement to China are higher than the cost of war.

Vietnam says all will lose in any South China Sea war
By: Agence France-Presse
August 30, 2016 5:10 PM

SINGAPORE - Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang warned on Tuesday there would be no winners in any armed conflict sparked by territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Quang, who is on a state visit to Singapore, told a forum that recent developments there were threatening regional security.

The Vietnamese leader did not mention any country but there is growing unease over China's actions.

China claims most of the South China Sea. It has reclaimed reefs and built airstrips capable of hosting military equipment, sparking anger from competing claimants led by Vietnam and the Philippines.

"The South China Sea, located at the heart of Southeast Asia, not only brings about many important benefits to nations in the region but it is also a vital route to maritime and air transport of the world," Quang said.

I like Vietnam's approach and maybe the Ph president can learn something useful from her.

Even though Vietnam and China have good economic ties, with Vietnam having billions in Chinese investments, Vietnam continues to strengthen her military. When there is a need to be assertive in a dispute with China, she can do so because of her strong military.

Even though Vietnam suffered terribly during her war with the US (probably including many civilian massacres as well), Vietnam is pragmatic enough to reestablish warm ties with the US so as to counterbalance China.

-----------------------------

Vietnam's plan to deploy or preposition missile/rocket system in the Spratlys is a good one. If her island is attacked, her defenders would have an instant response and maybe even repel the assault or at least make the attacker pay dearly. No need to wait for planes to be scrambled or a naval sortie and the defenders would probably be overwhelmed by the time help arrives. These would also probably be blocked by the more numerous PLA navy.

IMHO

Vietnam extending South China Sea runway - US think tank
By: Reuters
November 18, 2016 8:08 AM

Vietnam is extending a runway on an island it claims in the South China Sea in apparent response to China's building of military facilities on artificial islands in the region, a US think tank reported on Thursday.

Satellite images taken this month showed Vietnam had lengthened its runway on Spratly Island from less than 2,500 feet (760 meters) to more than 3,300 feet (1 kilometer), Washington's Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative said.

AMTI, a project of the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, said continued reclamation work would likely mean the runway was extended to more than 4,000 feet (1.2 kilometers).

It said the upgraded runway would be able to accommodate maritime surveillance aircraft and transport planes, as well as combat aircraft.

The report said Vietnam had added about 57 acres (23 hectares) of land to Spratly Island in recent years, but its reclamation work remained modest by Chinese standards.

Vietnam has lengthened the runway at Spratly Island from less than 2,500 feet (the shortest of any claimants’ in the Spratlys) to about 3,300 feet. Continued reclamation and construction will likely extend this to more than 4,000 feet. Vietnam is also constructing two large hangars. These new facilities can easily accommodate the Vietnamese air force’s PZL M28B maritime surveillance aircraft and CASA C-295 transport planes. The Vietnamese fleet also includes the Antonov An-26 transport plane and Hanoi has expressed interest in acquiring P-3 surveillance aircraft, but the runway at Spratly Island will not be long enough for either. Any of Vietnam’s combat aircraft could make use of the new runway, but the islet would have limited use for fighter jets given space constraints. By contrast, China’s three largest artificial islands now boast enough hangar space for 24 fighter jets each.

Risking Beijing's ire, Vietnam begins dredging on South China Sea reef
By: Lincoln Feast and Greg Torode, Exclusive for Reuters
December 8, 2016 6:46 PM

SYDNEY/HONG KONG - Vietnam has begun dredging work on a disputed reef in the South China Sea, satellite imagery shows, the latest move by the Communist state to bolster its claims in the strategic waterway.

Activity visible on Ladd Reef in the Spratly Islands could anger Hanoi's main South China Sea rival, Beijing, which claims sovereignty over the group and most of the resource-rich sea.

Ladd Reef, on the south-western fringe of the Spratlys, is completely submerged at high tide but has a lighthouse and an outpost housing a small contingent of Vietnamese soldiers. The reef is also claimed by Taiwan.

Vietnam And India To Spoil China's South China Sea Ambitions

Panos Mourdoukoutas ,

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

Vietnam and India are teaming up to tame China’s ambitions to control the South China Sea and the riches that are hidden beneath.

Early this week, Vietnam granted Indian oil firm ONGC Videsh a two-year extension to explore oil block 128, according to a Reuters report.

China considers the South China Sea its own sea, and is building artificial islands, defying international tribunal rulings – including one favoring the Philippines. While Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte isn't prepared to stop Beijing, Vietnam – which also claims parts of the waterway – seems to be.
