One thing I noticed is that the Chinese seem to be more willing to use warships to back their claims. Notice 7th fleet photos of PLAN ships near Scarborough shoal , Vietnam condemning China for using warships to guard the oil rig , are they now bold enough to the point that they don't care about the so called ''White on White'' strategy anymore? These quotes from officials , such as , ''Our position is we do not want to escalate any tension between China and the Philippines'' or '' there has been an emphasis on the provisions on not escalating any further tensions and also, not disrupting the status quo'' seem increasingly pointless when the other side is hell bent on escalating the situation and changing the status quo by force. Also, I'm intrigued by how China decided to pick on Vietnam this time. If I'm not mistaken , Vietnam , unlike Philippines , has been relatively silent about China's strong hand tactics in the SCS , they did not go for international tribunal , and they have high level government meetings with China about the SCS dispute. So now China simply decided to flip the table , why would they do this? At this timing? Why would they force a previously relatively mild nation into now an openly hostile one? (Speculation) Would it be because of China's support to Russia over Ukraine, Putin gave green light to China to do whatever it wants in the SCS? Is Vietnam , a country with close military relationships with Russa , thrown under the bus by Russia? If it is true , then ... 30 years ago, neglected by the USSR during conflict with China. Now, thrown under the bus , again. O man the irony. Anyway it's about time to build a proper outpost to replace the Sierra Madre |

grabe, them chinese is making the group of shoals / reefs into an island. they really dont care as long as they will control and have spratlys soon http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2014/05/15/1323405/photos-chinas-reclamation-mabini-reef imo, its useless talking to them chinese as they will still do whatever they want even if its the opposite of whats agreed upon. the world should send a strong message to them that they are not above the law, that the world is not revolving around them and they are not gods. this is not just a regional issue, this is a global issue btw hong, the picture in dw is a feb 2014 picture, the latest is much developed than that. see the philstar link above |

How about Vietnam? They control Collins Reef and they are only 4 miles away. That's not even below the horizon. The nearest Philippine controlled Island is tens of miles away. Maybe even a hundred. I still contend that it was first and foremost - Vietnam's responsibility to report and protest actions like these. This construction, of which they turned a blind eye on (which should be the case here), will come back to haunt them and affect them more than any of the other claimants involved. Why did they wait for the Philippines to do it? It's like having a fire next door and the fire-fighters show up only because the guy/hombre/dude on the other side of town reported it. I'm sorry if I might offend the Vietnamese members here. But, their government's inaction or their "balancing act" - when it comes to dealing with China has led to their situation now. Sadly, they brought it on to themselves and have no one to blame except their leaders. However, it's too late to do anything about it as the "island" has been practically completed. It's time for you to start building! Edited by Hong Nam, May 15 2014, 11:40 PM.

China building airstrip inside PH territory![]() Uel Balenia May 14, 2014 World “On 04 April 2014, the Philippines protested Chinese reclamation on Mabini (Johnson) Reef. The Chinese side rejected the protest. The President raised the Mabini Reef issue in Nay Pyi Taw. The Philippines already included Mabini Reef in the Memorial to clarify Mabini Reef’s physical character,” said in an official statement of Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs. The said reef is embraced by Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone as defined in United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), a treaty signed by more than a hundred countries including China and Philippines. link Edited by Nimrod878, May 15 2014, 03:34 PM.

^^ Just curious Nimrod... Why the Photo of Pag-asa Island and Rancudo Airfield as it isn't even in the link you provided? A bit misleading to the uninitiated eh?

^^IMO, those pictures are very much similar to "woody island" set up, their possible template... If they can't be stop, we might as well do as "what the Romans are doing" and to be honest. PH being the first official Country claimant, our very close proximity to KIG/ Spratly Islands compared to other Country claimants and the only Country claimant, who abides to the DOC under UNCLOS since from the start of the agreement.. Almost all of them had developed, modernized, fortified, their structures except PH. I believe it's HIGH time for PH to develop all of our controlled Islands, atolls, shoals etc. in KiG, starting with PAG-ASA Island and PH Military base, let the US construct a FOB in KIG, after all, there is technically an official PH Military base w/ Airstrip in Pag-asa Island and an existing local Municipality of Palawan. 2) Let's build and develop stations in Second Thomas (Ayungin shoal) rebuild BRP Sierra Madre into a floating "fixture" in the shoal to a heavily armed fortress station and might as well bring in another rebuilt modified LST armed w/ 40mm bofors, 105mm Howitzers, 20mm MGs, Missiles etc. (Firepower, enough to destroy or counter their Mischief Reef station) -Jackson Atoll, Flat, Nashan Islands, west york etc. to secure and protect REED bank. Let's DO IT!
