Chinese leave trail of shattered corals in Panatag - fishermen
Ron Gagalac, ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jun 14 2018 06:09 PM

MANILA - Chinese ships have siphoned off resources from the Panatag Shoal, leaving behind the shattered remains of once-colorful corals, some Filipino fishermen claimed Thursday.

Beijing in the past months harvested shiploads of fish, corals and other marine resources from Panatag, located only 124 nautical miles off Zambales province, fisherman Joseph Geruela told ABS-CBN News.

“Halos araw-araw may mga rubber boat kumukuha ng corals. Buwan ng Abril, marami, may 9 na barko nangunguha ng isda. Kinukuha nila 'yung bahay ng taclobo tapos mga shells,” Geruela said.

China patrols in Sandy Cay may legitimize nine-dash line claim - Carpio
ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jun 20 2018 09:55 AM

MANILA - Allowing China to patrol Sandy Cay might legitimize their claim to most of the South China Sea, Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said Wednesday.

Beijing has filed a claim to about 85 percent of the South China Sea before the United Nations in 2009 and the presence of its coast guard vessels "anywhere within the nine-dash line is to enforce their claim," said Carpio.

"China is now patrolling our territorial sea, which should never happen because we have sovereignty over that...Because China is claiming that, we should not allow it to patrol because if we allow China to patrol, they will later on say ‘You already agreed that we own this because we are patrolling it now,'" he told ANC's Headstart.

"We should be very careful in allowing anything that China will interpret later as acquiescence to their claim
," he added.

Let it be known. The SCS po was the barter/trade of DuRoqCay for the financial loans granted by China to PH. This will never be disclosed by the Philippine Executive spokespersons to China because they do not want to be blamed.

China may use infrastructure deals as leverage on West PH Sea issue: analyst
ABS-CBN News

Posted at Jun 24 2018 08:49 PM

MANILA -- The Philippines could be at the losing end of its deals with China, a geopolitical analyst warned Sunday, amid growing Chinese investments in the country.

Dindo Manhit, president of Stratbase ADR Institute for Strategic and International Studies, said the Philippine government should be cautious in signing agreements with China and other nations to avoid falling into a so-called "debt diplomacy."

‘China testing electronic warfare’

Paolo Romero (The Philippine Star) - July 7, 2018 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — China has been conducting electronic warfare tests using hardware installed in its military outposts in the disputed South China Sea.

Quoting sources who have seen US intelligence data, CNBC News reported that the testing was the first known use of the electronic warfare assets since the deployment of the equipment earlier this year in its fortified outposts, including Kagitingan (Fiery Cross) and Panganiban (Mischief) Reefs, both claimed by the Philippines.

“The move (testing) allows Beijing to further project its power in the hotly disputed waters. The placement of electronic warfare assets, which are designed to confuse or disable communications and radar systems, comes on the heels of China’s installation of anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems on three outposts in the South China Sea,” CNBC reported.

While the Philippines won its case before the arbitral tribunal in 2016 contesting China’s nine-dash claim over the South China Sea, the Duterte administration is treating Beijing “with kid gloves over the dispute.”

China’s Hainan invites ‘individuals’ to develop idle islands in South China Sea — report

Ian Nicolas Cigaral (philstar.com) - July 7, 2018 - 11:52am

MANILA, Philippines — China’s southern province of Hainan, which oversees the country’s territorial claims in South China Sea, has allowed “any entity or individual” to develop uninhabitated islands in the disputed waters in a bid to discourage rival claimants from occupying idle features, Chinese state media reported.

Chinese state-run tabloid Global Times reported on July 5 that the unoccupied reefs will be used for 50 years for tourism, aquaculture, amusement, development of salt and mineral industry, public welfare projects, and harbour and shipyard.
