Concrete and coral: Beijing's South China Sea building boom fuels concerns

HONG KONG/SINGAPORE - At first glance from above it looks like any clean and neatly planned small town, complete with sports grounds, neat roads and large civic buildings.

But the town is on Subi reef in the Spratlys archipelago of the hotly contested South China Sea and, regional security experts believe, could soon be home to China's first troops based in the maritime heart of Southeast Asia.

Carpio: Chinese jets, bombers may soon land on Subi Reef near Pag-asa Island
Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News

Posted at May 25 2018 09:09 PM

MANILA - Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio on Friday warned that Subi Reef (Zamora Reef) in the disputed Spratly Islands could soon see bombers and fighter jets landing on its runway.

The magistrate, a foremost advocate of the Philippines' claims in the South China Sea, said this in light of a recent report that the island is now home to a small town with "sports grounds, neat roads, and large civic buildings," and could possibly host China's first troops in the area.

Carpio told reporters that the presence of military-grade runways, hangars, hardened storage for ammunition, and retractable roofs for anti-cruise missiles in Chinese military installations in the South China Sea all point to the presence of fighter jets and bombers in the near future.

Actually removed? Or just concealed?

The Duterte administration might take credit for this as saying they pressured Beijing to remove them. :headbang:

China may have removed missiles from South China Sea island — report

Audrey Morallo (philstar.com) - June 6, 2018 - 6:33pm
MANILA, Philippines — China may have removed the missile systems it installed on three of its outposts in the South China Sea, according to a report, although it is unclear if this was due to the international pressure Beijing has been facing since the news on it broke.

According to CNN, new analysis from ImageSat International, an Israeli intelligence firm, suggests that China may have already removed or relocated its missile systems.

Previous imagery taken by the intelligence firm showed a number of missile launchers and a radar system on the shore of Woody Island in Paracel Islands. However, CNN said that these had already disappeared based on images taken on Sunday, which ISI said could indicate a decision by China to remove them or transfer them to other parts of the South China Sea.

China Warns US Against Provocations Following B-52 Flyby

The Associated Press 6 Jun 2018

BEIJING — China lashed out at the U.S. on Wednesday after a pair of B-52 bombers flew past a Chinese-held shoal in the South China Sea, amid escalating words and displays of military strength from the two major Pacific powers.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying warned the U.S. against "hyping up militarization and stirring up trouble," while promising that China would take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty.

Chinese coast guard continue to harass Filipino fishermen in Scarborough — report

Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - June 8, 2018 - 10:41am

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 12:14 p.m.) — Despite the "red lines" that the Philippines has set for China, the Chinese continue to harass Filipino fishermen in Panatag or Scarborough Shoal.

The disputed shoal is 124 nautical miles from the coast of Zambales but Chinese Coast Guard vessels are seen in the area, according to a report from GMA News' Jun Veneracion.

In the report, a Chinese coast guard speedboat can be seen going to the Filipino fishermen's boat where the television crew is also aboard.

Gawain ng isang duwag, este spokespeson ng China: DuRoqCay, asking Chinese govt for the reason of Chinese Coast Guard getting fishes from Filipino fishermen.

Hindi nila masabi at mautos sa China not to harass Filipino fishermen.

China in control of Panatag shoal, say Filipino fishermen
Alexis Romero (The Philippine Star) - June 12, 2018 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — China is in control of Panatag or Scarborough Shoal off Zambales and its coast guards are seizing the best catch of Filipino fishermen.

Romel Cejuela, a Filipino fisherman, raised the accusation at Malacañang in a briefing organized yesterday by presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

“They would check our containers and pick our best catch. We can’t do anything,” Cejuela said in Filipino.

“We are just trying to get along. Their ships are huge. What can we do as fishermen? If we refuse to yield, we will end up like crushed cans,” he said.
