If I remember I saw a post/comment here in PDFF sometime 2-3yrs ago, that China was intending to bring Missiles in WPS.

I saw that when I was reading-through the past posts before joining.

How far can China’s long-range missiles reach in the South China Sea? | Defense News

Melbourne, Australia ― China’s deployment of long-range missiles to its artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea would further consolidate and enhance the country’s physical control over the region and further complicate the movement of American military assets through the area, according to an Asian maritime security expert.

< snipped >

Koh told Defense News that the presence of the missiles, with a reported range of 160 and 295 nautical miles respectively, signifies that China regards the artificial islands as strategically high-value installations and merits the allocation of such resources for protection. The islands were built with sand dredged from the seabed. They are now host to airfields, military installations, supporting infrastructure and ship-berthing spaces.

In such an environment, the light frigates must have more protection or it might end up not being used at all.

China's missiles technically directed at everyone — Hilbay
Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - May 8, 2018 - 12:56pm

MANILA, Philippines — Contrary to the government's assurances that Beijing's weapons on the Spratly Islands are not directed to the Philippines, former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay stressed that the missiles are technically directed at everyone.

Hilbay, in a television interview, said that it was false to say that the missile system of China was not directed at the Philippines, the closest country where the weapons are installed.

"It’s technically directed at everyone within the range of that missile system and we’re nearest to the range of that missile system and so it is, in fact, directed at us," Hilbay told ANC's Early Edition on Tuesday.

LOOK: China military aircraft, ships in artificial islands near PH
ABS-CBN News

Posted at May 10 2018 09:42 AM | Updated as of May 10 2018 10:03 AM

MANILA - China has deployed a military aircraft to a base it built on a reclaimed island in the South China Sea, photos from an American think tank released Wednesday confirmed.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative published photos taken from April 28 showing a military aircraft, a Shaanxi Y-8, at Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands.

AMTI said the Y-8 was "designed as a military transport aircraft, but some variants are used for maritime patrol or signals intelligence."

"This should be particularly concerning to the Philippines, which has about 100 civilians and a small military garrison on Thitu Island just 12 nautical miles away," the think tank said.

China to deploy fighter jets to South China Sea — think tank
Paolo Romero (The Philippine Star) - May 15, 2018 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — In a matter of time, China will deploy fighter jets to its artificial islands in the South China Sea, which is expected to significantly expand Beijing’s capability to project power in its outposts, a private think tank has reported.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) recently said that developments at Kagitingan (Fiery Cross) Reef, Zamora (Subi) Reef and Panganiban (Mischief) Reef – known as the “Big Three” – followed similar military deployments in the China-occupied portions of the disputed Paracel Islands.

From harbor dredging and runway improvements to hangar and radar construction, upgrades on Woody Island in the Paracels “served as a blueprint for things to come on China’s Spratly holdings to the south,” the AMTI said.

The think tank said China deployed J-10 and J-11 fighter jets to Woody Island. In October last year, the Chinese military released images and video of J-11Bs on Woody for exercises

Show of force? China lands bombers on South China Sea airfield
By: Mike Yeo   2 hours ago

MELBOURNE, Australia – China has landed strategic bombers on an airfield in the South China Sea for the first time, in what its defense ministry says will enable its bomber crew to gain experience in operating from airfields built on islands and reefs.

In a media release, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense said several bombers of various types, including the improved Xian H-6K, carried out landing and take offs at an island airfield following simulated strikes on targets at sea.

Video released by the ministry showed the bombers from the 36th Bomber Division of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force or PLAAF carrying out touch and go landings as well as missed approaches on the airfield. Based on the runway orientation and other infrastructure seen in the video, Defense News has verified that airfield is at Woody Island in the Paracels chain, and not the airfields China has built on the reclaimed islands in the disputed Spratly Islands further south.

Beijing denies 'militarization' of South China Sea
Agence France-Presse

Posted at May 21 2018 09:59 PM

Beijing hit back at allegations it was "militarizing" the South China Sea on Monday after landing bombers at an airbase in the contested waters, instead accusing Washington of increasing tensions with its own military footprint.

China on Friday for the first time landed several combat aircraft -- including the long-range, nuclear strike-capable H-6K -- at an island airfield in the sea, triggering international concern.

The move prompted immediate criticism from the U.S., with a Pentagon spokesman condemning China's "continued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea".

China: No need to overinterpret bomber in South China Sea
Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - May 22, 2018 - 10:30am

MANILA, Philippines — Downplaying the deployment of a bomber aircraft on one of its outposts in the South China Sea, Beijing insisted that such activities were normal training of Chinese military.

Last week, the People's Liberation Army Air Force landed bombers, including the top-of-the-line H-6K, on Woody Island—China's largest base in the Paracel chain in the South China Sea.

"The South China Sea Islands are China's territory. The relevant military activities are the normal training of the Chinese military and there is no need for other parties to over-interpret that," Chinese Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a press briefing Monday.

China also called out the United States over its freedom of navigation operations in the region.

Palace ‘seriously concerned’ over China bombers
Pia Lee-Brago, Alexis Romero (The Philippine Star) - May 22, 2018 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang yesterday expressed “serious concern” over the landing of long-range Chinese bombers on one of the man-made islands in the South China Sea but clarified it does not see the deployment as an immediate threat to the Philippines.

“Even if we don’t feel that China is a security threat to us, for as long as there are weapons there, there could be mistakes in the discharge of these weapons and any threat of the use of force in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes, which happens also to be the sea lane where our oil supply passes through and bulk of our exports and imports pass through, is a reason for concern to us,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a press briefing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said meanwhile it is taking an “appropriate” but unspecified “diplomatic action” to protect the country’s sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea but did not mention China or the latter’s deployment of heavy bombers.
