BEIJING - China has unveiled a massive ship described as a "magic island maker" that is Asia's largest dredging vessel, state media reported Saturday.

The ship, capable of building artificial islands of the sort the country has constructed in the contested South China Sea, was launched Friday at a port in eastern Jiangsu province, according to the state-owned China Daily.

The boat named Tian Kun Hao is capable of digging 6,000 cubic meters an hour, the equivalent of three standard swimming pools, the newspaper said.

China continues South China Sea buildup, think tank says
David Brunnstrom, Reuters

WASHINGTON - While attention in Asia has been distracted by the North Korean nuclear crisis in the past year, China has continued to install high-frequency radar and other facilities that can be used for military purposes on its man-made islands in the South China Sea, a US think tank said on Thursday.

Chinese activity has involved work on facilities covering 72 acres (29 hectares) of the Spratly and Paracel islands, territory contested with several other Asian nations, according to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative of Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies. The report cited satellite images.

'Slow-moving crisis' as Beijing bolsters South China Sea war platform
The Guardian
Benjamin Haas China correspondent

China has created military facilities about four times the size of Buckingham palace on contested islands in the South China Sea, a new report has said, calling the build-up a “slow-moving crisis” in one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints.

China built about 29 hectares (290,000 square metres) of new facilities on contested islands in 2017, including munitions depots, sensor arrays, radar systems and missile shelters, according to an analysis by US thinktank the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Control of the South China Sea is one of the most contentious and explosive diplomatic issues in East Asia. For centuries, various regional powers have laid claim to the sea, which is rich in fisheries and serves as a shipping lane for more than half of the world’s oil tanker traffic.

Professor Jay Batongbacal, director of the UP Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, said the Philippines' seeming inaction on China's construction of facilities that may be used for military purposes may be interpreted as yielding to Beijing.

"If we continue to keep quiet, it is like we are accepting China's dominance in the West Philippine Sea, we're accepting that China can do whatever it wants even in our waters," Batongbacal said.

China dismisses ‘hype’ over military buildup
Philippine foreign secretary also downplays report on Chinese military buildup

BEIJING — China has defended its construction on disputed islands in the South China Sea as “normal,” after a US think tank released new satellite images showing deployment of radar and other equipment.

Beijing claims nearly all of the sea and has been turning reefs in the Spratly and Paracel chains into islands, installing military facilities and equipment on them.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (Amti) said the buildup continued this year despite rival claims across the sea from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

China confirms 'reasonable' expansion of S. China Sea islands
Reuters

Posted at Dec 25 2017 10:23 AM

BEIJING - China has "reasonably" expanded its islands in the disputed South China Sea and this year construction projects there including radar facilities covered about 290,000 square meters (72 acres), according to a new government report.

The number was broadly similar to one provided by a U.S. think tank earlier this month.

Chinese report says South China Sea islands expanded 'reasonably'

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has "reasonably" expanded its islands in the disputed South China Sea and this year construction projects there including radar facilities covered about 290,000 square meters (72 acres), according to a new government report.

The number was broadly similar to one provided by a U.S. think tank earlier this month.

China has conducted extensive land reclamation work on some of the islands and reefs it controls in the South China Sea, including building airports, alarming its neighbors and Washington.

Beijing says the work is help provide international services such as search-and-rescue but admits there is a military purpose too. China also says it can do whatever it wants on its territory.

MANILA, Philippines — China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force has deployed fighter jets to the disputed South China Sea for a joint combat mission, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.

According to the report, the Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets were dispatched to the sea to enhance the combat capability of the Chinese air force under long-distance or high-sea conditions.

"The PLA air force said it would continue to attach importance to science and technology, rule of law and sound planning in its training to improve its ability to win wars in the new era," Xinhua said.
