China ships still at Panatag shoal, but not harassing PH fishermen: DND

MANILA - Chinese coastguard ships are still patrolling the disputed Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal in the South China Sea but are not stopping Filipinos from fishing there, a Philippine defense spokesman said Sunday.

The information -- from fishermen who have just returned from the shoal -- came despite earlier Philippine government statements that the Chinese had left the outcrop they seized in 2012.

A spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte had said Saturday there were no longer signs of Chinese ships at the shoal, after Duterte visited China to repair frayed ties.

China installs weapons systems on artificial islands - think tank
By: David Brunnstrom, Reuters
December 15, 2016 6:54 AM

WASHINGTON -- China appears to have installed weapons, including anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, on all seven of the artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea, a US think tank reported on Wednesday, citing new satellite imagery.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said its findings come despite statements by the Chinese leadership that Beijing has no intention to militarize the islands in the strategic trade route, where territory is claimed by several countries.

AMTI said it had been tracking construction of hexagonal structures on Fiery Cross, Mischief and Subi reefs in the Spratly Islands since June and July. China has already built military length airstrips on these islands.

Not only that. Each of the three airstrips can station 24 fighters. If the PLA can make these operational it would result in the availability of a total of 72 fighters. Plus the air defence weapons of their installations and warships would make the skies over the Spratlys a very hot one if war comes.

China’s artificial islands now weaponized | philstar - Updated December 16, 2016
Quote:

The Department of National Defense (DND), raising concerns over this latest security development in the South China Sea and West Philipine Sea, is verifying the report.

Earlier, the commander of the United States Pacific Command (PACOM), Navy Admiral Harry Harris Jr., said the US is ready to confront China should the latter insist on enforcing its claims to most of the South China Sea.

Without describing PACOM’s own security monitoring over the disputed region, Harris said China continues to act in an “aggressive” manner in the South China Sea, to which he said the US stands ready to respond.

A U.S. think tank says recent images appear to show that China has installed anti-aircraft and anti-missile weapons on its man-made islands in the South China Sea. The Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a report this week that the anti-aircraft guns and a close-in weapons systems designed to guard against missile attack have been placed on all seven of the islands that China has created by piling sand on top of coral reefs. A similar incident also happen last November 12 when Filipino fishermen recover US sea drone in West Philippine Sea

Seized U.S. drone issue to be resolved smoothly: China paper | reuters - Sat Dec 17, 2016
Quote:

China expects a smooth resolution to the seizure by its navy of "unidentified" equipment found in the South China Sea, a state-run newspaper said on Saturday, after U.S. officials said a Chinese warship had taken a U.S. underwater drone.

< snipped >

China's influential state-run tabloid the Global Times, citing an unidentified Chinese source, said a Chinese naval vessel had discovered "unidentified equipment" and checked it to prevent any navigational safety issues.

< snipped >

The Pentagon confirmed the incident at a news briefing on Friday, and said the drone used commercially available technology and sold for about $150,000.

Still, the Pentagon viewed China's seizure seriously since it had effectively taken U.S. military property.

Philippines says won't protest China actions in Spratly Islands
16 Dec 2016

"We will make sure that there will be no further actions that will heighten the tensions between the two countries, particularly in the Scarborough Shoal.
Let them take whatever action is necessary in the pursuit of their national interest... and we will leave it at that, for the Philippines,
we have our bilateral engagements with China."

My goodness! Either govt is making the people naive, or simply, they are selling PH to China, just like what GMA did.
China itself is increasing the tensions!

This is NOT FAIR! Where is the "prof-Filipino" spirit of the government?
