http://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2016/06/07/howitzers_and_himars_in_the_south_china_sea_109425.html - I think this article says it all.

Why do we have to spend more money on advanced Modern Warships when we have 7k plus Islands that is unsinkable. Better for the Philippines to invest on SAM Systems and HIMARS against China's aggression.

** Here's my reply:

Unfettered Presence

1.) The concept of a 'fleet in being' - Naval ships differ from other military hardware because they have the advantage of being both "ends and means".

- HIMARS will not stop the Chinese from driving away your fishermen.
- HIMARS will not keep away the poachers and smugglers as well.
- The presence of a warship can send a powerful message of deterrence without a shot being fired. Can't say the same for HIMARS.

2.) Exactly the same argument could be said against even the most sophisticated SAM defense systems with regards to actual air patrols.

- Air patrols make a better case for reinforcing symbolism of a nation registering their non-consent to a claim.
- Continued coverage is necessary for effective MDA and enforcement missions from an international law standpoint.
- Unfortunately, SAMs don't provide these.

** Most importantly:

In no way did the author of the article you cited (James Hasik), nor did he write, indicate, nor imply that:

"You don't have to spend more money on advanced Modern Warships when you have 7k plus Islands that is unsinkable.
Better to invest on SAM Systems and HIMARS against China's aggression."

He also never did on any of his previous articles.

Sending warning? No, they should be expelled and pushed out, not only by Duterte, by PH, but by the U.N., and the international community.

Maintaining the operations (escorting and assisting the Filipino fishermen) of the Philippine Coast Guard at the West Philippine seas should be given priority by the present administration while continuing those stalled AFP modernization projects that directly addresses the AFP capability gaps in securing the Philippine territorial waters and its exclusive economic zones. All of these are in timely with the recent favorable ruling of the UNCLOS and that is a plus factor.

For the past and present Philippine presidents...it defines the word statesmanship: meaning not giving up an inch of the motherland territory that equates to economic gains for the future of the Filipino children.

Hoping that the patriotic aspects of a true Filipino leader will always abode in the White house of the Philippines.

Considering China's military superiority, Ph military budget limitations, and the frigates / multi-role fighters are still years off. I think one interim military option that could be explored is a combination of asymmetric and sea denial tactics. Maybe at least one mixed coastal defense unit can be formed consisting of a small squadron of missile boats and/or a mobile battery of land based anti-ship missiles, a SAM battery (that can protect the land missile battery but also the missile boats off shore when needed), a maritime patrol aircraft and other patrol ships, planes and UAVs if necessary. The unit would be rapidly deployed within striking range of a disputed area under threat of attack or in times of crisis.

For the Spratly islands, maybe a lighter version of such a unit can be used consisting of a stationary battery each of light anti-ship missiles and point defense SAM to be rapidly deployed by air in times of emergency.

These coastal defense units can also be used to complement the frigates and fighters once these are on line.

Duterte mulls China visit, says bilateral talks to start soonf

Tignan ko if it is to the interest of the nation. If not, then I will not," he told reporters in a chance interview in Malacanang on Monday.
While he kept his statement brief on a possible China visit, Duterte revealed that he intends to have the bilateral talks with China before the end of 2016.
"Nearer than you think. Within the year, maybe," Duterte said when asked about the talks with China.

Duterte: new Chinese barges at Scarborough; talks with Beijing to be premised on UN ruling
By: InterAksyon.com
September 2, 2016 5:30 PM

(UPDATE - 5:48 p.m.) MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte revealed Friday that he has received a report that China had recently brought in new barges to disputed areas in the Scarborough Shoal, wondering aloud if there is any new construction about to take place there, but said he will not initiate multilateral discussions on the South China Sea at next week's ASEAN meeting.

Nonetheless, the President said, he will make it clear to Beijing officials, should a one-on-one occasion arise, that he will keep all talks strictly within the ambit of the UN arbitral tribunal ruling that Manila won last July 12.

"I do not intend to raise the issue of [the South China Sea] before the ASEAN," despite the continuing acts of China signalling it stuck to its position to ignore the ruling handed down by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. That ruling, won after a three-year initiative by the Aquino administration, rejected China's "nine dash line" claim in the SCS, which Manila had called "excessive."

Damn, PH is the only Country who has the right in Scarborough Shoal according to the new Hague ITLOS ruling, they (other Countries), can fish, but not poach or put up any kind of structures.. those barges are illegal without Philippines consent.

PRD30 will not raise WPS issues at ASEAN Meeting?

:headbang:

I will give you guys a hint, kung hindi niyo pa ma gets? Now that we have the UNCLOS ruling on our side, Scarborough Shoal is Officially part of PH territory Automatically covered under PH/ US MDT, unlike before na disputed pa..
The US should now support the Philippines and must now acknowlege Panatag Shoal like the way they support Japan on Senkakus Islands....

US must now help the Philippines and must warn China of any illegal activities in Scarborough Shoal and ask them to withdraw their CCoast Guard Ships in the area. :salute:

Philippines concerned over Chinese boats near disputed shoal
By: Agence France-Presse
September 4, 2016 9:55 PM

MANILA - The Philippines has asked China to explain the increased presence of Chinese vessels near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, the defense secretary said Sunday, expressing "grave concern".

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said a Philippine Air Force plane saw four Chinese coast guard ships, two barge-like vessels and two suspected troop ships near the shoal on Saturday.

"The presence of so many ships, other than coast guard in the area is cause for grave concern," Lorenzana said.

And he just pushed away the president of the ONLY nation which is willing to militarily assist the Philippines. And frankly the only option for Philippines, without compromising on sovereignty, is for that nation to intervene diplomatically or even militarily .

Why this cool attitude and colorful language for allies, yet so accommodating to the Bully?

If this keeps up, we will see another Mischief 2.0 or Subic 2.0 (Massively scaled down EDCA).
