China military says conducted drills near Taiwan, Philippines

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese warships and aircraft on Wednesday passed through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines to hold routine planned exercises in the Western Pacific, China's Defense Ministry said.

China's increasingly assertive moves to press sovereignty claims in the East and South China Sea have rattled the region and aroused concern in Washington, although the country says it has no hostile intent.

China has overlapping claims with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei in the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year.

A temporary stop to the island-building in the SCS/WPS?

Why China Is Stopping Its South China Sea Island-Building (For Now)
China has announced it will complete its construction on the Spratlys “in the upcoming days.”

(...SNIPPED)

So why is China announcing an end to the construction now?

The Chinese government was quite clear that this was not an acquiescence to pressure, whether from rival claimants, ASEAN, or the United States. Lu’s statement included what has become China’s standard defense of its land reclamation, hitting all the major points: China has sovereignty over the Spratlys and thus is entitled to build on them; China’s construction does not target any other country and will not affect freedom of navigation and overflight; the upgrading of facilities is mainly aimed at civilian purposes, including maritime search and rescue and navigation safety. China’s construction activities “are thus beyond reproach,” Lu concluded. The construction is drawing to a close because it will be “completed,” not because China is abandoning the project.

Still, the announcement is undoubtedly intended to ease tensions in the disputed area, which have grown sky-high thanks to China’s island-building and an increasingly muscular response by the United States. Beijing is effectively reassuring neighbors that it will not continue the construction in perpetuity. Once this particular fait accompli is in fact accomplished, China will end its construction (though of course it could start again at any time). In essence, China is hoping to get the benefits of stopping construction (in terms of reaping goodwill from its neighbors) plus the benefits of having completed construction.

^^Imo, Much better to blow up these artificial Islands now than later.. They will just play like thieves at night and will continue w/ their constructions.

The fact of the matter is that, if anybody tries to pass by those areas either in the air or sea, there shouldn't be any kind of restrictions/ warnings coming from PLAN. Those artificial islands are already there and can be used by them, at any time..

They have successfuly solidified & increased their presence in Spratly Islands and WPS with strategy options Militarily at anytime. Them, STOPPING their illegal reclamation activities in the SCS, means nothing at all, but just to decieve the World. THE ONLY WAY TO REALLY STOP THEM, IS FOR THOSE ARTIFICIAL ISLANDS NEED TO GO OR TO BE USELESS TO THEM... :gotya:

IMO, The best strategy for the US and it's Allies to do are to start, by slowly withdrawing investments, manufacturing companies, etc. in China and divert and spread it over to all it's allies and other friendly Countries in Asia. Countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India can help & benefit from this move and other Countries in the UK, EU, should follow suit.
In this way, China would be busier worrying more of it's economy, haulting it's Military growth to that extent and will result in aborting it's mad ambitions and hegemony plans.

Mr. Newsman,

Do you have a link? If this is true, akala ko ba "Parang pumasok na sila sa Recto avenue?!!!"

Dapat pag kaganiyan, eh pinuputukan na yan at any cost, to show that it means war for PH, regardless of our much weaker Military compared to them..
We can invoke our MDT with the US, if they try to fight us over Recto bank.

Incoming Chinese drones?

Are Chinese Drones Heading to the East China Sea?

A few curated defense and security links to start your week:

Chinese drones in the East China Sea? Japan’s Kyodo News reported last week that China’s People’s Liberation Army may move forward with the use of remotely piloted aircraft (i.e. drones) over disputed waters in the East China Sea. China disputes the sovereignty of the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, which are administered by Japan and claimed by China. In late 2013, Japan clarified that it would shoot down any foreign drones that entered its airspace after ignoring initial warnings. While tensions in the East China Sea have decreased in recent months, aerial provocations by China could once again turn up the heat and force a Japanese response. Of course, this squares nicely with a new Yomiuri Shimbun report that China is planning a coastal base in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, to monitor the seas around the Senkakus.

Why all the ambiguity in the South China Sea? This post over at CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative by a Chinese legal scholar is worth reading. It examines the reasons that China has chosen to keep the precise extent of its claims in the South China Sea ambiguous under international law within its nine-dash line framework. The AMTI article pairs nicely with two recent takes on the South China Sea issue here at The Diplomat: Carl Thayer’s analysis of how China is winning in the South China Sea through its use of “legal alchemy,” and Andrew Chubb’s take on what exactly the status quo — both normatively and positively — means in the context of the South China Sea.

China gives more details on South China Sea facilities

BEIJING (Reuters) - The Chinese government on Wednesday rolled out more details of the building work it is undertaking in the disputed South China Sea, listing lighthouses, communications stations and other facilities for civilian and emergency use.

China stepped up its creation of artificial islands last year, alarming several countries in Asia and drawing criticism from Washington. There have been recent tensions between the Chinese navy and the U.S. military around the Spratlys.

China, which said this week some of the reclamation work will be completed soon, says the construction on the islands will help with maritime search and rescue, disaster relief, environmental protection and offer navigational assistance as well as have undefined military purposes.

well, if this is confirmed, then our tongressman and senatongs had done the real damage. if until now they can't grasp the implications of their actions, maybe if they will held a joint session of congress in pag-asa island they will see the real deal, we'll see how they will deal with the Chinese ships blocking their way.

these personalities might be dreaming of coming to see the great wall someday and they don't want their visas denied ... but however you think of it it just boils down to that simplification. no single amount of love for country.

Somebody's acting being born yesterday... no matter what the eventualities are, PH security is actually tightening up... heck you won't see a president rounding the golf courses in China now.

As you mentioned all the allies I assume not LP is your forte... and I will be assuming you are rooting for the benevolent VP Binay.
