^^ Global Strategic Fall-out of China's Unfolding South China Sea Strategy.

Summed up briefly as follows:

- United States Strategic Pivot to Asia Pacific generated by China's outsized strategic ambitions in the Western Pacific.

- Strategic polarisation against China is beginning to shape-up in Asia.

- Enlarged 'strategic constructs' like Indo Pacific as opposed to the earlier Asia Pacific are taking shape aimed at integration of Pacific and Indian Ocean strategies both at the regional level and the global level.

- United States military establishment is reported to have finalised contingency plans to militarily intervene if China attacks the Philippines or Japan. An attack on Vietnam could possibly draw the same US response.

** Seriously??

China is using its immense commercial fishing fleet as a surrogate navy
By Adam Pasick
July 28, 2014

China has a lot of fishermen - with 695,555 vessels, its commercial fishing fleet is more than double the size of the next biggest, from Japan. That's primarily because China eats a lot of fish per capita, and catches more fish than any other country in the world by a huge margin.

Posted Image

But it's not just about keeping Chinese bellies full. According to an excellent in-depth report from Reuters, Beijing is increasingly equipping fishing boats with geolocation devices, filling them up with subsidized fuel, and dispatching them to the disputed waters of the South China Sea, where they are clashing with rival fishermen from Vietnam and the Philippines.

Quote:

(Reuters) - On China's southern Hainan island, a fishing boat captain shows a Reuters reporter around his aging vessel. He has one high-tech piece of kit, however: a satellite navigation system that gives him a direct link to the Chinese coastguard should he run into bad weather or a Philippine or Vietnamese patrol ship when he's fishing in the disputed South China Sea.

Boat captains have paid no more than 10 percent of the cost. The government has paid the rest.

Hainan authorities encourage fishermen to sail to disputed areas, the captain and several other fishermen told Reuters during interviews in the sleepy port of Tanmen. Government fuel subsidies make the trips possible.

That has put Chinese fishing boats - from privately owned craft to commercial trawlers belonging to publicly listed companies - on the frontlines of one of Asia's flashpoints.

"It's pretty clear that the Chinese fishing fleet is being encouraged to fish in disputed waters. I think that's now become policy as distinct from an opportunistic thing, and that the government is encouraging its fishing fleet to do this for geopolitical as well as economic and commercial reasons."
- Alan Dupont, Professor, University of New South Wales
China has laid claim to about 90% of the South China Sea, most notably the tiny island chains know as the Spratlys and Paracels, which are claimed by the Philippines and Vietnam, respectively, along with many other countries in the region. The disputes encompasses issues of sovereignty and energy exploration, but it's also about fishing rights. And as China's near coastal waters become increasingly over-fished, its vast armada of fishing boats will have to travel even further to fill their nets, to sate their countrymen's ever-growing hunger for seafood.

China to build lighthouses on five isles in defiance of U.S. call

BEIJING (Reuters) - China plans to build lighthouses on five islands in the South China Sea, state media reported on Thursday, in defiance of calls from the United States and the Philippines for a freeze on such activity to ease tension over rival claims.

At least two of the islands upon which China said it will put up lighthouses appear to be in waters also claimed by Vietnam.

Overlapping claims in the South China Sea have fueled confrontation in recent months with China, which claims 90 percent of the sea, at odds with Vietnam and the Philippines in particular.

The state-run China News Service said Chinese authorities had been surveying sites for lighthouses on five islands, known in English as North Reef, Antelope Reef, Drummond Island, South Sand and Pyramid Rock.

China’s great Asian land grab [ipolitics.ca] - Aug 7, 2014
Quote:

Beijing today signalled its disdain for a Southeast Asian regional summit set for this weekend, where China’s aggressive pursuit of its disputed territorial claims will be high on the agenda.

Chinese state media quoted a Maritime Safety Administration official as saying his department plans to build five lighthouses on islands in the South China Sea that are also claimed by Vietnam.

The Chinese announcement is a clear thumbing of the nose at the summit of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in Burma this weekend, which will attempt to head off the prospect of conflict by calling for a moratorium on “provocative and destabilising activities.” That, according to the Philippines — which is proposing the moratorium and has had some of the most violent confrontations with Chinese vessels — would include building of new outposts and structures on disputed islands.

Beijing officials have underlined their attitude towards the summit by saying they consider the Philippines’ call for a “voluntary freeze” as just another example of efforts by the United States to contain China’s growing diplomatic and military power and influence. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has indicated he will support the moratorium at the summit.

If in case any of the other 3 areas that they plan to build lighthouses, particularly in Scar or Ayungin, the PH Govt. together w/ US, should indicate these areas as RED LINES...

A WARNING to: Any new structures/ lighthouses they will try to build will be blown into pieces!

I think, this is the right time for the US to give an example, to show that they mean what they say and are very much committed to US Pivot to Asia Pacific.

IMO, PH Govt./ DND should try to lease at least (2) MRF's either from SK or US while waiting for the first (2) FA-50's to be delivered next year. "O kaya, pina- upgrade muna sa USAF yung ating (2) F-5's using part of the US Military Aid or ask SK for (2) F-5 tigers???" Loads of other options really...

Anything can happen in between while waiting for those FA-50s, in cases like we need to act swiftly for defending, protecting our Country's sovereignty, it should always come to us first..

Under normal circumstances, the US or any other foreign Allies should not act on behalf of PH's "initial" security, protective and defensive moves. "Kung baga tayo starter with their backing in case it get's worse.."

DAPAT DIYAN SA MGA IYAN BIGYAN TALAGA NA NG SAMPOL like "TITIGIL KA BA O HINDI???!!!

"Kapag tinira kasi natin iyan, dapat HIT n RUN, tapos nakabantay ang PN, USAF, USN inside PH Airspace, EEZ Sea territories..."
There's a great big deal of connection between what's happening to China and Russia's "Pang gugulo" Towards PEACE, not to mention having very similar scripts n strategies.

They (China/ Russia) are always SYNCHRONIZED and they both serve as "Distraction or Diversion" to the US and it's Allies and pretty sure they will take each others turn grabbing any opportunity to fulfil their own selfish gains and interests.

IMO, The longer you LET OFF these two "Anti NORM" Countries w/ their wrong doings, the worse its gonna get.. It's sending a very Bad PRECEDENT to other wannabe rogue Countries and will be much harder to resolve.

The Philippines should re-tighten it's grips in Spratly's and Scarborough Shoal like the way it use to deal and handle them before with regards to INTRUSIONS, new illegal structures, activities by firing warning shots to make them leave, arresting, blowing up illegal structures, if possibly...

PH just want to maintain the previous status quo and for others to respect other Country's EEZ, sovereignty with accordance to UNCLOS.

Magdalo Rep scores neglect of PH-occupied territories in Spratlys

By Ellen Tordesillas

2014/08/28

In the power point presentation Rep. Ashley Acedillo of the Magdalo Party showed last Wednesday, he compared the massive fortification and expansion of the Chinese of their occupied reefs in the disputed Spratlys area in the South China with the miserable state of the islands and reefs occupied by the Philippines.

Acedillo, in a privilege speech titled “Our country is in grave danger,”questioned what seems to be a government policy of benign neglect in our occupied territories in Spratlys.

“With an Air Force that can’t protect our air space and a Navy that can’t protect our maritime interest, claimant countries have accelerated their creeping occupation of our islands,” said Acedillo, formerly an Air Force Officer who was detained for seven years for rebelling against Gloria Arroyo in what was known as “The Oakwood Mutiny.” ...

To secure our territory, Acedillo said “the ideal joint concept to adopt is defense- in-depth which is anchored on the principle of pressing the border out by engaging the enemy as far out as possible.”

What is preventing the government from adopting and implementing it?

It really paints a very sad picture in the WPS. That's what years of neglect gets you.

However, I am curious to see photos during his privilege speech. Not do I only want to see the faces of your lawmakers, I want to see who is sleeping, laughing, fiddling with their electronic gadgets and how many of them are there.

Most importantly, I hope this got through their thick heads, sealed their bottomless pockets and finally do something about it.
