Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario told Reuters on Monday that both Manila and Hanoi were also reaching out to Malaysia to swap notes on how best to deal with China.

He said he hoped the three could eventually settle their own South China Sea disputes amongst themselves, something that would strengthen their hand in responding to China.

"If we get there, we get there," he said. "That's a good opportunity for us."

The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry said it did not yet have information on the planned Spratlys party.

Vietnamese envoys and sources close to the Malaysian government said both Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi, meanwhile, were watching Manila's move to challenge Beijing's claims to the South China Sea at an international arbitration tribunal.

China refuses Vietnam's call to stop oil drilling
Chris Brummitt, Associated Press

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Vietnam demanded China stop oil drilling operations in a disputed patch of the South China Sea, saying on Monday that Beijing's decision to deploy a deep sea rig over the weekend was illegal.

China dismissed the objections, saying the activity was being carried out in its territorial waters.

The China Maritime Safety Administration posted a navigational warning on its website advising that the CNOOC 981 rig would be drilling in the South China Sea from May 4 to Aug. 15, in an area close to the Paracel Islands, which are controlled by China but Vietnam claims as its own.

China's maritime administration also said that ships entering a 3-mile (4.8-kilometers) radius around the area are prohibited.

Vietnam's foreign ministry said the area where the rig was stationed lay within Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as defined by the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Has China (and it's state sponsored mouth-pieces) shifted targets? They seem to have Hanoi in their "cross-hairs" now. Too early to say but perhaps the EDCA has indeed bought you some time.

Chinese media threatens Vietnam with a 'lesson it deserves' over oil rig row

China should give Vietnam a "lesson it deserves to get" if Hanoi ratchets up tension in the South China Sea, an aggressive editorial in state-run media said on Tuesday.

The editorial in the Global Times newspaper - which has close links to the ruling Communist Party - comes after Vietnam reacted furiously to a decision by Beijing to move a deep-water drilling rig into disputed waters for the first time.

"We believe Hanoi has no guts to attack China's drilling platform directly. If Vietnam takes further actions in Xisha, the level of China's countermeasures must be elevated. China should evaluate whether Vietnam would stick its head out and become a more aggressive provocateur than the Philippines. If so, China should alter its Vietnam policy and give Hanoi a lesson it deserves to get."

Vietnam tries to stop China rig deployment

HANOI, Vietnam—A Vietnamese government official said Vietnamese navy and coast guard vessels are trying to prevent a Chinese oil rig from establishing a fixed position in a disputed part of the South China Sea and that vessels from the two countries have collided.
The official said no ammunition had been fired and there were no reports for injuries.
The standoff Wednesday close to the Paracel Islands raises the possibility of skirmishes in one of Asia’s most volatile regions.
Earlier two foreign diplomats said Vietnam dispatched up to 29 ships to the area near the oil rig when it became aware of China’s intentions on May 2.

Vietnamese Navy Confronts Chinese Ships in Oil Rig Dispute

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/08/world/asia/philippines-detains-crew-of-chinese-fishing-vessel.html?_r=0

By GERRY MULLANY and DAVID BARBOZAMAY 7, 2014

HONG KONG : Tensions in the South China Sea intensified Wednesday as Vietnamese naval vessels confronted Chinese ships that were working to place an oil rig off Vietnams coast, and Vietnamese officials claimed their had been a collision between the two nations ships.Vietnamese officials told The Associated Press that no shots were fired during the incident and there were no injuries. But the confrontation highlighted the hair-trigger tensions in the region as Asian nations try to contain Chinas more aggressive posture in pursuing maritime claims in the South China Sea.The confrontation occurred just days after the Chinese state oil company Cnooc stationed the rig 120 nautical miles off the coast of Vietnam, in waters claimed by China and Vietnam. The placement of the rig led to protests and demands by Vietnam that it be withdrawn, and the deployment of a Vietnamese naval flotilla to the area.

This is going to be interesting. Vietnam has vowed not to fire first unless Chinese warships start shooting.

Two foreign diplomats said Vietnam dispatched up to 29 armed naval and coast guard ships to areas near the oil rig when it became aware of China’s intentions. Citing a Chinese diplomat, one said the Vietnamese deployment was meant to be a “show of force” to get Beijing to withdraw the rig.

China moved the giant deep-sea oil rig to an area close to the Paracel Islands on May 2 accompanied by a large flotilla of naval vessels.

The Vietnamese official said Vietnam’s ships were outnumbered by the Chinese flotilla escorting the rig.

TIME

Based on this report from Time, Vietnam's total of 29 ships are still outnumbered by the Chinese's vessels... now this is really very interesting... I believe, the outcome of this will affect PH... the world is watching...

Vietnam vows to take all measures to defend its territories (angmalaya.net)
May 7, 2014
Quote:

Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh called China State Councilor Yang Jiechi to say that deploying an oil rig accompanied by military vessels violated Vietnam’s sovereignty. However, Yang Jiechi responded saying not to interfere with China’s activities in Xisha Islands (in China) or Hoang Sa (in Vietnam).

On the other hand, Vietnam vows to protect its territory and it “will apply all necessary and suitable measures to defend its rights and legitimate interests”.

China's increasingly aggressive claims over disputed territory in the South China Sea boiled over Wednesday, when ships from Vietnam and China collided about 140 miles off of the Vietnamese coastline, and a Chinese fishing boat was seized by Philippine authorities carrying hundreds of turtles.
