China says will never send military to oil rig spat with Vietnam
By Ben Blanchard
Reuters - 3 hours ago

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese official said on Friday that China will never send military forces to the scene of an increasingly ugly spat with Vietnam over an oil rig in the South China Sea, and accused Hanoi of trying to force an international lawsuit.

Vietnam has accused China of sending six warships, but Yi Xianliang, deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs, said that China had never sent military forces.

"I can tell you very clearly that from May 2 to today, including to when the (drilling) operations are complete, we have never, are not and will never send military forces. Because we are carrying out normal, civilian, commercial activities," he told a hastily arranged news conference.

"What I can tell you is that this is on a maritime route and at some periods there have been certain Chinese military ships coming back from the south but these have been far away" from where the stand-off round the rig has been taking place, Yi added.

China 'builds school' on disputed South China Sea island
AFP News - 6 hours ago

China has begun building a school on the contested Paracel islands, state media reported, as the Asian giant further asserts its claims in escalating territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The school on Chinese-held Sansha or Woody Island will serve about 40 children whose parents work there, the official news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday, adding that construction will cost about 36 million yuan ($5.8 million) and take a year and a half.

China established Sansha as a city in 2012 to administer a wide swathe of waters and islands in the South China Sea, creating an oddity that is by far the world's largest city by area but has a minuscule population of around 1,000 people.

No they weren't invited. :rifle:

They are planning to copy the event and add their own "Chinese flair" to it. Rumours are that they will invite themselves and play without an opposing team - Assuring themselves of a clear and unquestionable victory.

Int’l maritime experts downplay China’s nine-dash line claim
Manila BulletinManila Bulletin – Tue, Jun 24, 2014
Quote:

Retired French General Daniel Schaeffer said China was able to defy international law over the past years by maintaining its “groundless claim” over the disputed region and infringing upon the sovereignty of the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia – all claimants to parts of South China Sea.

Quote:

And since the Chinese government has failed to present any credible evidence that proves its sovereignty over the South China Sea, pioneering legal scholar and Asian expert Jerome Cohen recommended that like the Philippines, Vietnam should file a case against China before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) supported by the argument that the nine-dash line runs counter to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Quote:

Cohen, who is currently a professor of law at New York University School of Law and serves as “counsel” at the international law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, said Vietnam should use all legal means available to demonstrate to the world that justice is on their side by either uniting with the Philippines or it can unilaterally sue China in an international arbitration court in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS, to which China is a signatory.

Philippine Armed Forces Chief of Staff visits Vietnam
25/06/2014

General Emmanuel Bautista, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and his wife are paying an official visit to Vietnam from June 23-26 at the invitation of Senior Lieutenant General Deputy Defence Minister Do Ba Ty.

The two senior military officials said that the two armies have yet to tap potential for bilateral cooperation despite positive developments in bilateral defence cooperation.

They suggested the two armies should promote stronger cooperation in delegation exchange at all levels, personnel training, naval ship visits, search and rescue at sea; solve the problem of fishermen violating the law while fishing in bordering waters and exchange views on matters of mutual concern.

In addition, Vietnam wants the Philippines to cooperate and share their experience in participating in UN peacekeeping mission.(VOV/VNN)

Vietnamese authorities stay strong at oil rig site [thanhniennews] - July 01, 2014
Quote:

The Chinese maintain a fleet of up to 120 ships around the rig, including 46-48 coast guard vessels, 13-15 cargo ships, 34 fishing boats and 16-18 tugboats.

Vietnamese fisheries surveillance ships that have attempted to approach the rig from a distance of 10-11.5 nautical miles have been swarmed by Chinese ships determined to besiege and obstruct them from accessing the rig.
Vietnamese fisheries surveillance ships have continued to brave the Chinese blockade and its aggressive sentries to press the fleet to leave the area.

Vietnamese fishing boats that initially attempted to travel to traditional fishing grounds 40-44 nautical miles from the rig were hindered by a fleet of nearly 34 Chinese fishing boats backed by two coast guard ships.

Vietnamese fisheries surveillance ships have since been dispatched to protect their operations.

According to the department, the rig remains stagnant.

Phl, Vietnam discuss territorial row vs China
By Pia Lee-Brago (The Philippine Star)
July 4, 2014

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines and Vietnam have discussed the rising tension and the urgent need to address the challenges in the South China Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

During his visit to Vietnam on Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, it said.

The department declared that the two foreign ministers urged that the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea be implemented in its entirety, including refraining from the use of coercive force. They also agreed that the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea be concluded without undue delay.

The ministers discussed observing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in addressing the dispute in the South China Sea.

The discussions between them were comprehensive, constructive and productive, and covered bilateral cooperative projects, international and regional concerns, and people-to-people ties, it added.

The two sides agreed to further promote cooperation in fisheries, ocean and maritime, defense and security, trade and investment. They would also advance partnership in the establishment of a joint commission to formulate a road map in working on a strategic
