Surging Canadian Liberals ask for majority mandate Wed Oct 14, 2015 11:34am EDT By Randall Palmer
HAMILTON, Ontario (Reuters) - Canadian Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, surging in the polls in the final stretch of the election campaign, asked voters on Wednesday to give him a majority government on Oct 19 - but insisted he would not get over-confident.
"Am I asking Canadians to vote for us? Yes. Am I asking them to vote for us across the country? Yes. Am I asking them for a majority government? Yes," Trudeau said in answer to a reporter's question.
Trudeau has rarely talked about the possibility of jumping from the Liberals' third-party status to majority government, mainly because it had seemed to be so far out reach.

Brothels, shackles and marijuana feature in Canada election ads Wed Oct 14, 2015 5:54pm EDT
By David Ljunggren
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Wednesday defended an election ad that claimed his main rival wanted to set up brothels - the latest in a series of hard-hitting commercials that have marked the campaign.
Harper's Conservatives, trailing in the run-up to the Oct. 19 election, are running newspaper ads aimed at ethnic communities that claim the opposition Liberals want to legalize prostitution and open brothels, and also make it easier to sell marijuana to children.
The Liberals deny they have any such plans, but Harper said the ads were justified and dismissed the suggestion the Conservatives were fear-mongering.

Canada's fractious opposition leaders face pressure to cooperate Wed Oct 14, 2015 3:12pm EDT
By David Ljunggren
OTTAWA (Reuters) - In the final week of Canada's election campaign, the leaders of the opposition Liberals and New Democratic Party are locked in a fierce and divisive battle for the same center-left votes.
Behind the scenes, however, insiders from both parties tell Reuters there will be huge pressure on the leaders to forge some sort of a power-sharing agreement after the Oct. 19 vote rather than risk a deadlock and another election.
The willingness of Liberal chief Justin Trudeau and NDP boss Thomas Mulcair to seal a deal could have a direct bearing on whether Canadians have a stable government after polls close on Oct. 19, or face a prolonged period of political instability.

Canada Liberal boss defends ethics after pipeline furor Thu Oct 15, 2015 11:05am EDT
By Randall Palmer
MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadian election front runner Justin Trudeau defended the ethics of his Liberal team on Thursday after his campaign co-chair was forced to resign over controversial advice to an energy company on how to lobby a Liberal government.
The campaign official, Dan Gagnier, had sent an email on Monday to TransCanada Corp in his private capacity as a consultant, advising it on how to win approval for projects, including the Energy East oil pipeline.
When news of the email emerged on Wednesday, the Trudeau campaign at first said Gagnier had done nothing wrong. By evening it sent out a notice that Gagnier had resigned, but blamed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative Party for "mean-spirited politics.

In Canada, Trudeau's campaign echoes father, but with selfies Thu Oct 15, 2015 6:50pm EDT
By Randall Palmer
LAVAL, Quebec (Reuters) - Danielle Sarkisian jumped up and down on the chair she was standing on at the Village Grec restaurant as if she were 13, not 63, and squeaked: "I don't want to wash my hand."
In a crush of supporters and media, she had just shaken hands with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, the front-runner in next Monday's Canadian election, and had goosebumps.
Her reaction had echoes of the Trudeaumania that swept Pierre Trudeau to the prime minister's office in 1968, with father and son possessing an appeal more common in movie stars than statesmen.

Canada's Liberals brace for potential transition to power Sat Oct 17, 2015 6:18am EDT
By David Ljunggren and Randall Palmer
OTTAWA/BRAMPTON, Ontario (Reuters) - Having gone from third place in the polls to front-runner just days before Canada's election, Justin Trudeau's center-left Liberals are bracing for what would be a hectic and painful transition from the political wilderness to government.
Liberal sources, who asked not to be identified, said on Friday and earlier this week that the transition team included close Trudeau aides Gerry Butts, Katie Telford, Cyrus Reporter and Mike McNair - though official talk of any preparation for the prime minister's office is forbidden.
"We have to stay focused and any hint of arrogance or entitlement will be avoided," said a senior party member.

Pierre Trudeau makes world news on his birthday: a foreign look at the election The Canadian Press By Alexander Panetta, The Canadian Press
WASHINGTON - The late Pierre Elliott Trudeau was making international news on what would have been his birthday on Sunday as foreign media focused on the possibility his son might follow in his footsteps to become Canada's next prime minister. Canadian conservatives who seethe over the father's legacy and abhor the prospect of a Justin Trudeau prime ministership might be advised to bypass some of this foreign coverage in the interest of blood-pressure management. But Canadian Liberals will feel warm waves of nostalgia from foreign media recollections about one of the country's best-known political figures on the eve of the election — also the anniversary of his birthday 96 years ago.

Harper at risk as swing to the left expected at Canada election Mon Oct 19, 2015 12:06pm EDT
By Rod Nickel and Randall Palmer
CALGARY/MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadians look set for political change on Monday as polls showed a strong prospect that Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government will be ousted, or reduced to a minority, amid a late surge by Liberal rival Justin Trudeau.
The 11-week campaign was considered too close to call for nearly two months, a virtual tie between the Conservatives, Liberals and left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP).
But the emergence of Trudeau, the 43-year-old son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, as frontrunner in recent polls has much of Canada's national media writing Harper's political obituary after nine years in office.

BREAKING: Stephen Harper resigns from Conservative leadership after landslide loss BY KENNETH CHAN 9:08 PM PDT, MON OCTOBER 19, 2015
The tides have changed in Canada with Stephen Harper being forced out of the Prime Minister’s Office by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party’s red wave across the country.
The Liberal Party has claimed a majority government, with the Conservatives forming the opposition and the NDP bumped down to third place. However, the 56-year-old was able to hold onto his Member of Parliament seat in the riding of Calgary Heritage.
“We gave everything we had to give and we had no regrets whatsoever,” said Harper. “The people of Canada have elected a Liberal government, a result we accept without hesitation. I congratulate him on his successful campaign, and I have assured him my full cooperation in the transition over the coming days.”

Canada's Trudeau sweeps to victory, toppling Harper in election
By Randall Palmer and Rod Nickel
MONTREAL/CALGARY (Reuters) - Canada's Liberal leader Justin Trudeau rode a late campaign surge to a stunning election victory on Monday, toppling Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives with a promise of change and returning a touch of glamor, youth and charisma to Ottawa.
Canada's major television networks projected a majority for the Liberals, a turn in political fortunes that smashed the record for the number of seats gained from one election to the next. The Liberals had been a distant third place party in Parliament before this election.
The projected win ends the Conservatives' nine-year run in power and reflected a political shift away from Harper's brand of fiscal and cultural conservatism.

I never expected Justin will win this one. Let see if he is good for Canada economy. Am keeping an eye if he has anything to offer for specifically the much needed replacement for CF18.

I work at pharmacy, taking prescriptions and filling them, and making sure picking the right drugs. Seems to be boring and unexciting day job. Surfing on defence net and getting bits of information and learning from it is surely more exciting and fulfilling on my soul.
