Nanos survey: Tight race begins for top three parties

CTVNews.ca Staff

Published Sunday, August 2, 2015 12:20PM EDT

The federal election race is officially under way, and the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP appear to be in a three-way race as they leave the starting line.

The latest ballot tracking from Nanos Research shows a razor-thin margin of voter preference support separating the first-place Conservatives from the NDP and Liberals, in a survey that asked respondents which two parties they would consider voting for in their local riding.

Stephen Harper’s Conservatives led the survey results with 31.5 per cent support overall, followed closely by Thomas Mulcair’s NDP at 30.1 per cent, with Justin Trudeau’s Liberals trailing at 29.3 per cent support. The Green Party ranked a distant fourth in the survey with 5.4 per cent support.

Russia's Arctic claim to North Pole could be an election issue
CBC – Wed, 5 Aug, 2015

Russia's new bid to the United Nations for vast regions of the Arctic — including the North Pole — may put the Canadian government in a lose-lose situation in an election year.
In a statement released Tuesday, Russia's foreign ministry said their country is claiming 1.2 million square kilometres of Arctic sea shelf. The area extends more than 650 kilometres from the shore.
"I think the election will have a very strong influence on the immediate reaction of the Canadian government," said Rob Huebert from the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.
He says Arctic sovereignty has been one of the major platforms of the Conservative government, and in an election year it can become a hot-button issue.

Liberal leader Trudeau looks to prove himself in debate
Reuters

By Randall Palmer and David Ljunggren

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, who won headlines in 2012 by whipping a Conservative senator in a charity boxing match, will try to prove he's a heavyweight in the political arena in Canada's first electoral debate on Thursday.

The 43-year-old Trudeau, who has fallen to third from first in the polls, will face three-term Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, 56, as well as 60-year-old Thomas Mulcair, leader of the New Democratic Party. The debate will have to vie for attention with Donald Trump and the U.S. Republican primary debate on the same night.
Polls show Mulcair has displaced Trudeau as the main challenger to Harper in the run-up to the Oct. 19 vote amid questions over whether the Liberal leader with boyish looks has the experience to head Canada's federal government.

"We can't afford another four years of you': Mulcair to Harper as leaders debate
By The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Stephen Harper's record on the economy and the environment faced an all-out assault from three different fronts, but the long-dormant issue of Quebec separatism generated a heated exchange in the second half of Thursday's televised leaders' debate.
NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Green party's Elizabeth May set their sights on multiple aspects of the Conservative government's program of tax cuts and balanced budget pledges.
Harper was repeatedly forced on to the defensive, "clarifying" economic statistics flung at him by his opponents.

'That is simply not true': Trudeau goes after Harper for misleading attack at debate
CBC – Thu, 6 Aug, 2015

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper faced a smackdown after he went after Liberals and the NDP during Thursday night's debate, accusing the other parties of aiming to cancel income splitting for seniors, a tax benefit measure his government introduced in 2007.
"We brought in income splitting for our pensioners, something the other parties oppose," Harper said.
"Mr. Harper, that is simply not true," replied Trudeau, sparking a backlash against Harper's debate performance that galvanized the other three party leaders participating in the debate and provoked a response on social media.
"You're putting that in misleading attack ads and none of the other parties have talked about touching it, and I'm including Mr. Mulcair on income splitting," he went on, defending NDP Leader Tom Mulcair as well as himself.

NDP candidate's comment on oilsands stirs up hornet's nest
The Canadian PressBy The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - Most of the federal party leaders stayed off the campaign trail Saturday, but a comment from a high-profile New Democrat candidate on the oilsands stirred up a political hornet's nest in Alberta.
Linda McQuaig, a well-known author and the NDP candidate for the riding of Toronto Centre, told a CBC television panel discussion on Friday that for Canada to meet its climate change targets, "a lot of the oilsands oil may have to stay in the ground."
The comments contrasted with NDP leader Tom Mulcair's past comments on Alberta's oilsands. Mulcair has been open to oilsands development provided there is rigorous environmental protection and legislation to force oil companies to pay for pollution they create, including increased greenhouse gas emissions. He has favoured the development of an east-west pipeline.

PM Harper could get election shock when ex-aide appears at trial
Wed Aug 12, 2015 7:23am EDT

By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A former top aide to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper could reveal potentially damaging details about a corruption scandal as he takes the stand on Wednesday at a trial that threatens to eclipse the ruling Conservative's re-election bid.

Harper's former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, is the highest-profile witness to testify in the months-long trial of Conservative Senator Mike Duffy, who is accused of receiving a bribe and abusing expense claims two years ago.

The testimony of Harper's one-time confidant ramps up just as the election campaign swings into its second week, with the prime minister scheduling a trip to Canada's remote Arctic that overlaps with his appearance.

Harper promises to collect data on foreign real estate investments if elected
BY
BEHDAD MAHICHI
12:31 PM PDT, WED AUGUST 12, 2015

Canada is one of the few countries that doesn’t collect data on foreign investors, and that needs to change, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Making a stop at the Seaspan dock in North Vancouver, Harper said he wants the government to find a way to address the rising cost of housing.

“This province will probably have a lot to do with choosing who is the next prime minister of Canada,” said Harper. There are real concerns that foreign non-resident real estate speculation is the reason some Canadian families find house prices beyond their budgets.”

If re-elected, Harper said he will increase the tax-free withdrawals of his Home Buyer’s Plan from $25,000 to $35,000. Harper also promised that the government will begin collecting data on foreign speculation, to assess its impact on housing prices.

70% of Vancouver homes over $3 million sold to Chinese buyers

As housing prices continue to rise in Vancouver, one realtor suggests it’s not all because of foreign investment.

Numbers released by MacDonald Realty suggest in 2014, 70 per cent of homes costing $3 million or more were bought by people from Mainland China.

Managing director Dan Scarrow says the participation rate from foreign investors is actually quite low when it comes to the lower 75 per cent of the market.

Scarrow says Mainland Chinese buyers only represented 11 per cent of sales of houses under $1 million.

Canada PM pledges limits on foreign home buyers if needed
Wed Aug 12, 2015 2:49pm EDT

By Randall Palmer

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged on Wednesday if reelected to limit foreign purchases of Canadian real estate if it turns out that such purchases are pricing Canadians out of the housing market.

"There are real concerns that foreign, nonresident real estate speculation is the reason some Canadian families find house prices beyond their budgets," Harper said in Vancouver, where the housing market is especially hot.

The Greater Vancouver market has seen an influx of money from China and Hong Kong, and the average price of a detached home in the area in July was C$1.4 million ($1.1 million).

Trudeau pledge to grow economy 'from the heart outwards' greeted with mockery
CBC – Thu, 13 Aug, 2015

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau became the butt of a few internet jokes after saying he wants to grow Canada's economy "from the heart outwards" during a campaign event in Regina on Wednesday.
"We're proposing a strong and real plan, one that invests in the middle class, so we can grow the economy, not from the top down, the way Mr. Harper wants to, but from the heart outwards. That's what Canada has always done well," Trudeau said.
The remarks prompted many to ask just what growing an economy "from the heart outwards" actually means.
