Google Maps Urged to Remove Chinese Reference to Panatag Shoal http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2015/07/12/1475999/google-maps-urged-remove-chinese-reference-shoal Updated July 12, 2015 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines - Filipino netizens are urging technology giant Google to remove from its maps service a Chinese reference to the disputed Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.A Change.Org petition said Google Maps has identified the shoal, located off the coast of Zambales, as part of China’s Zhongsha Islands – a group of submerged reefs and shoals in the area being claimed by several countries, including the Philippines. Panatag Shoal is within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).“China’s sweeping claim of South China Sea under their nine-dash line purportedly historical boundary is illegal and is creating tension among nations,” read the petition (http://chn.ge/1LXhtSk), which had over 400 supporters as of yesterday. “Google maps showing this is part of Zhongsha island chain gives credence to what is plainly a territory grab that peace loving nations should stand against,” it added.Several Filipino netizens have called on the tech giant to remove the Chinese reference, especially since the map has opted to use the more neutral Scarborough Shoal instead of its Philippine name Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal or the Chinese name Huangyan Island.“The use of that name promotes the violation of the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas) if it perpetuates China’s unlawful claim,” said Quezon City resident Julian Chris Galvez. |

TALES FROM CHINA | Observatory 'Built' on Panatag; Astronomer in 2 Places at Same Time - Carpio http://www.interaksyon.com/article/113174/observatory-built-on-panatag-astronomer-in-two-places-at-same-time---carpio June 27, 2015 3:08 PM MANILA - Could a 13th century Chinese astronomer have built an "observatory" more than 12 meters high and several meters wide, on the Philippines' Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, which juts a mere 1.2 meters above water at high tide? This was the claim made by the Chinese embassy web site to buttress Beijing's claim on the area it de facto occupied in 2012, and from which it routinely drives away Filipino fishermen. The answer to whether that claim is at all possible is "No," on two counts - on sheer physical impossibility, and on China's own conflicting accounts - according to Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who cited in a recent lecture the absurdity of Beijing's claims. It's just one of many, Carpio said, that Beijing has been using to boost its "baseless' nine-dashed line claim, the anchor of its steady expansion in the South China Sea.First, there's the sheer physical impossibility, granting astronomer Guo Shoujing, indeed, visited Panatag (Scarborough) in 1279 and erected an observatory there. Here's why. In his lecture at a forum organized by the nationalist group P1NAS at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila on June 25, Carpio flashed onscreen an image of a 12.6-meter high stone observatory situated in Henan Province, which, he said, is "the only extant astronomical observatory among the 27 that Guo Shoujing built during the Yuan Dynasty." |

"China cannot now claim that Scarborough Shoal is the South Sea island that Guo Shoujing visited in 1279, because China had already declared in 1980 that Gou Shoujing visited the Paracels where he erected that astronomical observatory." - Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio |

Google Now Shows Scarborough Shoal in Google Maps Not as Part of Zhongsha Islands http://www.angmalaya.net/nation/2015/07/13/12128-google-hears-filipino-netizens-petition-on-scarborough-shoal Uel Balenia - July 13, 2015 Days after an online petition was started at Change.Org, Google now shows Scarborough Shoal in Google Maps not as part of Zhongsha Islands of Sansha prefecture-level city in Hainan province. The petition said “Google maps showing this (Scarborough Shoal) is part of Zhongsha island chain gives credence to what is plainly a territory grab that peace loving nations should stand against.”Prior to change, Google Maps online software showed that AutoNavi is the provider of the information which says Scarborough Shoal is part of Zhongsha Islands of Sansha prefecture-level city in Hainan province. AutoNavi is a China-based web mapping content , navigation, and location-based solutions corporation and has now been removed as the data provider for Scarborough Shoal.

Fishermen remove Chinese-marked buoys off Zambales Randy V. Datu - Rappler July 25, 2015 ![]() CHINESE-MARKED BUOYS. Fishermen in Zambales remove these markers seen to assert China's claim over the West Philippine Sea. Screen grab from Rappler video ZAMBALES, Philippines – Fishermen here discovered 3 lengthy floating containment booms, or buoys, located in 3 different barangays about 6 miles from the disputed Bajo de Masinloc (Scrarborough Shoal) in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Nine fishermen found the orange-colored floating booms in the sea off Zambales. They towed the booms toward the shore and brought them to 3 barangays - Sitio Lanao, San Agustin, and Sto Rosario. The fishermen said the booms' markings appear to indicate ownership by China. Edited by Hong Nam, Jul 25 2015, 11:55 PM.

Here's the interview with on of the fishermen involved: Now before I say anything, I would like to know... Did the fishermen themselves cut the mooring lines of these buoys or was it already adrift when they towed it back to shore? If they didn't cut the mooring lines and towed it to shore - then, you can spare the criticism against your government. Either way, it was a truly courageous feat for them to do.
