Tillerson and Mattis hosted Chinese foreign policy chief Yang Jiechi and Gen. Fang Fenghui, chief of the People’s Liberation Army’s joint staff department, for the first session of the US-China Diplomatic and Security Dialogue in Washington.

Tillerson said he and Mattis had a frank exchange of views on the disputed waters with the Chinese leaders.

Mattis said that they also discussed the importance of freedom of navigation, peaceful resolution of maritime disputes and ways to decrease tension in the South China Sea.

The Pentagon chief stressed that the US will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows.

WASHINGTON - An American warship on Sunday sailed close to a disputed island in the South China Sea occupied by Beijing, as part of an operation to demonstrate freedom of navigation in the waters, a US official said.

The destroyer USS Stethem passed less than 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) from tiny Triton Island in the Paracel Islands archipelago, which is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam, the official told AFP.

China has accused the United States of staging a “serious political and military provocation” after an American warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea.

The USS Stethem, an American guided-missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, a small landmass in the Paracel Islands chain, on Sunday, a U.S. defense official said, marking the second such operation since President Trump took office.

No nation will recognize an illegal occupation, who's presence is not recognized by international law.

The WORLD is condemning China for serious POLITICAL and MILITARY provocations & threats in invading and illegally occupying those island that are internationally recognized by international law as owned by other countries.

U.S. bombers challenge China in South China Sea flyover
Reuters

Two U.S bombers flew over the disputed South China Sea, the U.S. Air Force said on Friday, asserting the right to treat the region as international territory despite China's claims in the busy waterway.

The flight from Guam on Thursday came as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare for a likely meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany. The two leaders were expected to discuss what Beijing can do to rein in Pyongyang's missiles and nuclear weapons programs.

The United States believes North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday that put parts of the U.S. mainland within range of Pyongyang's warheads for the first time.

US destroyer challenges China's claims in South China Sea

WASHINGTON - A US Navy destroyer carried out a "freedom of navigation operation" on Thursday, coming within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built up by China in the South China Sea, US officials told Reuters.

The operation came as President Donald Trump's administration seeks Chinese cooperation in dealing with North Korea's missile and nuclear programs and could complicate efforts to secure a common stance.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USS John S. McCain traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals. China has territorial disputes with its neighbors over the area.

The US has conducted 3 "freedom of navigation" operations near islands held by China to challenge Beijing's maritime claims since US President Donald Trump took office in January. Brendan McDermid, Reuters

Beijing hit back Wednesday at US President Donald Trump's veiled criticism of its territorial claims in the disputed South China Sea, countering that the United States was a greater threat to sovereignty.

In his speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump decried "threats to sovereignty" in Ukraine and the resource-rich South China Sea, without explicitly mentioning Russia or China.

"We must uphold respect for law, respect for borders, and respect for culture, and the peaceful engagement these allow," Trump said.

What China does not understand is that these sails were done in international waters. What China does not understand is that they (China) are squatters and made illegal structure. So basically, they have no rights to claim anything in the Southeast Asian Seas

China's claim is partially based on "historical documents" dating from the Ming Dynasty (1400s) which say Chinese sailors have long laid claim and frequented the South China Sea.

It's also partially based on the voyages of the treasure fleet of Ming Dynasty Admiral Zheng He who went to what is now present-day Singapore, the Indian Ocean and supposedly present-day Africa.

The problem with this is that if they somehow secure this claim to the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea and push everyone out, what's to stop them from claiming other lands?

The Malay peninsula and Singapore have significantly large populations of ethnic Chinese; what's to stop them from claiming those lands for historical reasons or the need "to protect ethnic Chinese"?

Russia used the similar justification of protecting ethnic Russians in their annexations of Crimea and East Ukraine.

China protests U.S. sail-by in disputed waters
Agence France-Presse

China said Wednesday it has lodged a protest with the United States after an American warship sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea.

The U.S. Navy missile destroyer Chafee entered into China's territorial waters near the Sansha islands on Tuesday, according to Beijing's foreign ministry.

China immediately dispatched military vessels and aircraft for identification and warned the US ship to leave, ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing.

"The US vessel action violated Chinese laws and relevant international laws, undermined China's sovereignty and security interests," Hua said.
