US faces stiff China pushback in S. China Sea: experts
By: Agence France-Presse
January 25, 2017 6:49 PM

BEIJING - If Donald Trump's hawkish new administration follows through on threats and tries to cut Beijing off from artificial islands in the South China Sea, it could face a stiffer pushback than many imagine, experts say.

The US president and his team have made much of their desire to put Beijing in its place, including in the strategically vital waterway, which China claims almost entirely and where it has reclaimed -- and fortified -- thousands of acres of land, according to the Pentagon.

Trump's nominee for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, told his confirmation hearing the US needs to send a clear signal that China's access to the islands is "not going to be allowed".

Observers quickly pointed out the full-scale blockade this would require was likely to provoke a military response from Beijing -- a response that might be enough to make the US think twice.

China military official says war with US under Donald Trump 'becoming practical reality'
The Independent

War with the US under Donald Trump is “not just a slogan” and becoming a “practical reality”, a senior Chinese military official has said.

The remarks were published on the People’s Liberation Army website, apparently in response to the aggressive rhetoric towards China from America's new administration.

They communicated a view from inside the Central Military Commission, which has overall authority of China’s armed forces.

Quoted in the South China Morning Post, the official from the Commission’s Defence Mobilisation Department wrote: “A war ‘within the president’s term’ or ‘war breaking out tonight’ are not just slogans, they are becoming a practical reality.”

Steve Bannon: 'we're going to war in the South China Sea ... no doubt'
The Guardian
Benjamin Haas in Hong Kong

The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the U.S. will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

Those are the views – nine months ago at least – of one of the most powerful men in Donald Trump’s administration, Steve Bannon, the former head of far-right news website Breitbart who is now chief strategist at the White House.

In the first weeks of Trump’s presidency, Bannon has emerged as a central figure. He was appointed to the “principals committee” of the National Security Council in a highly unusual move and was influential in the recent travel ban on citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, overruling Department of Homeland Security officials who felt the order did not apply to green card holders.

Everyone loses in China-US conflict - Beijing
By: Martin Parry, Agence France-Presse
February 8, 2017 12:31 PM

SYDNEY, Australia -- Beijing has played down the prospects of conflict with the United States over the South China Sea in the wake of aggressive rhetoric by Donald Trump's administration, saying both sides would lose.

China asserts sovereignty over almost all of the resource-rich region despite rival claims from Southeast Asian neighbours and has rapidly built reefs into artificial islands capable of hosting military planes.

The islands are considered a potential flashpoint and recent comments from White House spokesman Sean Spicer and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have raised the temperature.

But Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on a visit to Australia that war would benefit no-one.

US and Chinese military planes in 'unsafe' encounter over contested South China Sea
The Independent
Lizzie Dearden

American and Chinese military aircraft have had an “unsafe” encounter over the contested South China Sea amid warnings that the risk of skirmishes is increasing in the contested region.

Major Robert Shuford, a spokesperson for US Pacific Command, said a US Navy patrol plane was involved in the interaction on Wednesday.

Calling it “unsafe”, he said the P-3C Orion had been conducting a routine mission when it neared a Chinese KJ-200 surveillance aircraft.

China warns US against fresh naval patrols in South China Sea
By: Philip Wen, Reuters
February 16, 2017 12:34 AM

BEIJING - China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday warned Washington against challenging its sovereignty, responding to reports the United States was planning fresh naval patrols in the disputed South China Sea.

On Sunday, the Navy Times reported that US Navy and Pacific Command leaders were considering freedom of navigation patrols in the busy waterway by the San Diego-based Carl Vinson carrier strike group, citing unnamed defense officials.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said tension in the South China Sea had stabilized due to the hard work between China and Southeast Asia countries, and urged foreign nations including the US to respect this.

Carrier Strike Group 1 conducts South China Sea patrol

From Carrier Strike Group One Public Affairs

Posted February 18, 2017

SOUTH CHINA SEA - Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, including aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1's guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), and aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, began routine operations in the South China Sea, Feb. 18.

Prior to their operations in the South China Sea, ships and aircraft from within the strike group conducted training off the islands of Hawaii and Guam to maintain and improve their readiness and develop cohesion as a strike group. The strike group recently enjoyed a port visit to Guam and after departing the Marianas, conducted operations in the Philippine Sea.

"The training completed over the past few weeks has really brought the team together and improved our effectiveness and readiness as a strike group," said Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander, CSG 1. "We are looking forward to demonstrating those capabilities while building upon existing strong relationships with our allies, partners and friends in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region."

China opposes US naval patrols in South China Sea
By: Michael Martina, Reuters
February 21, 2017 8:49 PM

BEIJING - China said on Tuesday it opposed action by other countries under the pretext of freedom of navigation that undermined its sovereignty, after a US aircraft carrier strike group began patrols in the contested South China Sea.

The US navy said the strike group, including the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson, began "routine operations" in the South China Sea on Saturday amid growing tension with China over control of the disputed waterway.

"China always respects the freedom of navigation and overflight all countries enjoy under international law," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing.

"But we are consistently opposed to relevant countries threatening and damaging the sovereignty and security of littoral countries under the flag of freedom of navigation and overflight," Geng said in China's first official comment on the latest US patrol since it began.

US Flexes Military Muscle At China
Duration: 00:50 46 mins ago

As China flexes its military muscle in the South China Sea, the U.S. is responding with its own show of force. The U.S. has brought out its own ships, fighter jets and submarines, as well as the test launch of nuclear-capable missiles. According to internal military reports, almost every week brings another display of U.S. hardware in the waters off China. The display has grown more aggressive since the inauguration of President Trump. In the last decade, China has converted dozens of tiny islands — many claimed by other countries — into military bases. In January, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said during his confirmation hearings that the U.S. would block China's access to the disputed islands, and send a "clear signal" that "island-building stops.”

US envoy stresses peaceful resolution in South China Sea
By: Tricia Aquino and Jose Bimbo Santos, InterAksyon
February 28, 2017 8:20 PM

MANILA - While United States Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim was noncommittal on what specific action his country will take in the event China proceeds to build structures on disputed Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal in the West Philippine Sea just west of Zambales Province, he nevertheless stressed US interest in the peaceful resolution of issues among all claimant states in the disputed waters.

Kim was the keynote speaker at the general membership meeting of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) Tuesday at the Peninsula Manila hotel in Makati City.

Ambassador Kim said that the US was not a claimant in the maritime disputes, but it hopes that countries would refrain from taking unilateral actions, such as building structures and intensifying militarization. He added that the US cares deeply about respect for fundamental rights, like freedom of navigation.
