other "reliable" and "more strategic" US allies continued to receive billions in military aid while the Ph received a small fraction subject to conditions.

This has been the norm for decades. Everybody knows that.

The Philippines is a rich country masquerading as a poor one. You have the money, even poorer countries have a better equipped military despite this. Just look at Vietnam and Bangladesh.

The bigger questions are:

- Why the over reliance in US military "AID" ? You should have looked out for yourself decades ago.
- Why depend on someone who had so many conditions?

You were getting much less compared to other countries when they had bases in your country.

- You expected to get more since kicking them out?

The only one you can rely on is yourself.

Yup. The ph govt had neglected defence spending for decades and all of that but that's already history and nothing could be done about that. I am more concerned about the present military modernization. I don't think that would be enough against a giant power, you would still need a strong and reliable ally for additional support. One that can immediately lend you a hand in times of emergencies.

It looks like US will be doing the square off on it's own, without the Philippines under Duterte Administration..

Since the start of the PH/ China Scarborough standoff, the US has been muted and less supportive to PH fully knowing that Scarborough Shoal is without question part of Philippine Territory. The US indeed really made a monkey out of the Philippines, so I think they deserved to be treated like one by the current Philippine Administration.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no DU30 supporter neither a Yellowtard, I'm for Juan de la Cruz.

Sad Part:
Their ALL (US, China tagging PH in a dog collar) in this together and whomever they put in as Puppets in our corrupted Government System.

The No.1 CAUSE:
It's all about the OIL n GAS!!!
and CONTROL of Passage in the South China Sea/ West Philippine Sea!

Questions we should be asking:

-Why did the US allowed China to take control of Scarborough Shoal? (How everything started)
-Despite the bad precedent, the US still didn't try and do anything to stop ALL "Illegal Chinese Reclamation(s)" in SCS/WPS?
-the mere POSTURING on both sides (during square offs in SCS) where meant to shake Military Sales Market that would benefit both..
-Is the SCS/ WPS Philippine Territories and all it's O&G and all Natural Resources are like compromised as payment for US Debt to China?
-Did China break their x Agreement between US, by Militarizing all of it's Artificially Man made Islands in SCS?
-Why do you think Pres. Trump designated former Exxon Mobil Chairman CEO Rex Tillerson as US Sec State? Now with new plans to STOP China's illegal activities at all cost, maybe even willing to go to WAR with China Over the South China Sea..?
-ARE THESE ALL JUST A COINCIDENCE???

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE OIL/GAS in the PHILIPPINE TERRITORIES, which is the BIGGEST!

Absolutely. I am glad the military modernisation plan is being continued. Your present president is for it - that's good news. Accelerating it would be better. The bad news is that instead of strengthening alliances, he's destroying them.

- Just continuing Aquino Govt's AFPM Plans is the BIG PROBLEM.

Unless we see something unusual than the usual, like changes, Lethal Weapon, Military Assets acquisition Plans and purchases under the Duterte Government in the next 3-4yrs, different from the Aquino Govt, then we are just again in for a monkey ride. The same ending of the story, same plot, execution style with just different main characters running the show with Executive Producers China and the US.

@AVB, this is my imo....

Questions we should be asking:

Q: Why did the US allowed China to take control of Scarborough Shoal? (How everything started)
A: PH was directly affected, as it is within our jurisdiction. However, the PH didn't do much. Moreso now, the current admin does care.

Q: Despite the bad precedent... SCS/WPS?
A: It was PH desire to wait for the tribunal decision which would give a more legal approach, however, the tribunal decision was given gravity with the chg of govt. China was even given a full-support to YES GO TAKE OUR AREAS.

Q: Is the SCS/ ... US Debt to China?
A: It is China who want to control the SCS because of the resources: O&G, water control, air control. The 1940's map and the naming convention as SCS is just an alibi.

Q: Did China break their ... by Militarizing all of it's Artificially Man made Islands in SCS?
A: No. China broke the international law, while it pushes the same law vs Japan.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE OIL/GAS in the PHILIPPINE TERRITORIES, which is the BIGGEST!
A: Yes, correct. Since age, PH had always been the center of invasion. We had always been the apple of the eye.

- The "monkey ride" has been going on for decades. At least give credit to your last president for starting decades long stagnation of military procurement.

- You're in for a bigger "monkey ride" with your new "allies" and you can give credit for that to your new president.

- However, he has repeatedly said that the modernisation shall continue... hence, we should give him credit for that too.

- "The jury is out" and with a new US president who most likely will "hit it off well" with him, who knows? Perhaps something good will come out of it.

US vows China won’t take South China Sea islands
By: David Brunnstrom and Matt Spetalnick, Reuters
January 24, 2017 6:55 AM

WASHINGTON -- The new US administration of President Donald Trump vowed on Monday that the United States would prevent China from taking over territory in international waters in the South China Sea, something Chinese state media has warned would require Washington to "wage war."

The comments at a briefing from White House spokesman Sean Spicer signaled a sharp departure from years of cautious US handling of China's assertive pursuit of territory claims in Asia, just days after Trump took office on Friday.

"The US is going to make sure that we protect our interests there," Spicer said when asked if Trump agreed with comments by his Secretary of State nominee, Rex Tillerson, on January 11 that China should not be allowed access to islands it has built in the contested South China Sea.

McCain proposes $7.5 billion of new US military funding for Asia-Pacific

GMA Network

The funds, $1.5 billion a year for five years to 2022, could be used to boost US munitions stocks in the region, build new military infrastructure, such as runways, and to help allies and partner countries increase their capabilities, an aide to McCain and a US military official said. ...

An official in the administration of new U.S. President Donald Trump, who took office on Friday, said he believed McCain's proposal was "very much in general alignment with the administration's goals in the region." ...

A US military official, who did not want to be identified, said the funds could go to construct new military runways in countries such as Australia and the Philippines and to make up a shortfall of munitions that the head of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris, complained of last year.

China says will protect South China Sea sovereignty
By: Ben Blanchard and David Brunnstrom, Reuters

BEIJING/WASHINGTON - China said on Tuesday it had "irrefutable" sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea after the White House vowed to defend "international territories" in the strategic waterway.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer in his comments on Monday signaled a sharp departure from years of cautious US handling of China's assertive pursuit of territorial claims in Asia.

"The US is going to make sure that we protect our interests there," Spicer said when asked if Trump agreed with comments by his secretary of state nominee, Rex Tillerson. On Jan. 11, Tillerson said China should not be allowed access to islands it has built in the contested South China Sea.
