China returns underwater drone, US condemns 'unlawful' seizure | Interaksyon - December 20, 2016
Quote:

China's defense ministry said in a brief statement the drone had been given back to the United States on Tuesday.

"After friendly consultations between the Chinese and US sides, the handover work for the US underwater drone was smoothly completed in relevant waters in the South China Sea at midday," the ministry said.

The defense ministry declined to give more details about the handover when contacted by Reuters.

The Pentagon said the vehicle had been handed over to the guided missile destroyer USS Mustin near where it had been "unlawfully seized". It called on China to comply with international law and refrain from further efforts to impede lawful US activities.

McDonald's sells China operations; South China Sea row a factor in US companies' woes
By: Agence France-Presse
January 9, 2017 4:11 PM

Beijing, China - US fast-food giant McDonald's will sell a controlling stake in its China and Hong Kong business for up to $2.08 billion to a consortium including state-owned Citic and the Carlyle Group, it was announced Monday.

The deal is part of an international turnaround plan as McDonald's struggles with sluggish growth at home.

Citic Limited, Citic Capital Holdings, Carlyle Group and McDonald's will form a company that will act as franchisee for the chain's business in mainland China and Hong Kong for 20 years, the companies said in a joint statement.

Citic is a vast Chinese state-owned conglomerate with interests in businesses ranging from energy and manufacturing to real estate.

Trump is ready to push back in the South China Sea | AFR - Jan 11 2017
Quote:

Key members of the Trump administration are shaping to confront China in the South China Sea.

Last month Donald Trump tweeted: "Did China ask us if it was OK … to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea? I don't think so!"

Trump is clearly irritated by Beijing's behaviour, and senior members of Trump's team are also expressing deep concerns.

China now asserts sovereignty over some 80 percent of the South China Sea, one of the world's most strategically important waterways. This stretch of water to Australia's north carries more than half of the world's merchant tonnage and serves as an important transit route for the militaries of the US and many of its allies and friends. China now operates by far the largest military, coastguard and maritime militia presence in this region.

Tillerson sets stage for showdown with Beijing over South China Sea

CNN

January 12, 2017

President-elect Donald Trump's pick for secretary of state has set the stage for a potential showdown with China over the South China Sea, saying that China should be denied access to the artificial islands it has built in the disputed waters.

Rex Tillerson, the former CEO of oil giant ExxonMobil, told his confirmation hearing Wednesday that China's activity in the waters, which see $5 trillion in shipborne trade a year, was "extremely worrisome." ...

"Building islands and then putting military assets on those islands is akin to Russia's taking of Crimea. Its taking of territory that others lay claim to," Tillerson said.

"We're going to have to send China a clear signal that first, the island-building stops, and second, your access to those islands also not going to be allowed."
God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.

When asked repeatedly about Tillerson's comments on blocking access to islands, China's foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said he couldn't make any guesses as to what Tillerson was referring to and would not answer hypothetical questions.

China's right to carry out 'normal activities' in its sovereign territory in the South China Sea is 'indisputable', Lu said, speaking at a daily briefing on Thursday. He did not elaborate.

Regional military sources said while the U.S. navy had extensive capabilities in Asia to stage blocking operations with ships, submarines and planes, any such move against China's growing naval fleets would risk dangerous escalations.

The response was muted from the Philippines, a traditional U.S. ally that last year won an international arbitration case that included a challenge to China's island-building within its 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone.

"These are not policies yet and let us wait if they will implement what was said in the hearing," Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told reporters on Thursday.

"Let's wait until Trump is in office."

Trump choice to State: China should be denied access to South China Sea islands
By: Reuters
January 12, 2017 7:15 AM

The United States must send a clear signal to China that its island-building in the contested South China Sea must stop and that its access to those islands will not be allowed, US President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state said on Wednesday.

In comments certain to enrage Beijing, Rex Tillerson told his confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that China's building of islands and putting military assets on those islands was "akin to Russia’s taking Crimea.”

Asked whether he supported a more aggressive posture toward China, he said: “We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed.”

US needs to 'wage war' to block access to South China Sea islands - Chinese tabloid
By: Reuters
January 13, 2017 12:53 PM

Blocking Chinese access to islands in the South China Sea would require the US to "wage war," an influential Chinese state-run tabloid said on Friday, two days after US Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson suggested the strategy.

Tillerson told his confirmation hearing before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he wanted to send a signal to China that their access to islands in the disputed South China Sea "is not going to be allowed." He did not elaborate.

The United States would have to "wage a large-scale war" in the South China sea to prevent Chinese access to the islands, the Global Times said in an English language editorial.

The paper, which is known for writing strongly-worded, hawkish and nationalist editorials, is published by the ruling Communist Party's flagship paper. It does not reflect Chinese policy.

Interview: Vice Adm. Tom Rowden, Commander, US Naval Forces
By: Christopher P. Cavas
January 8, 2017

In 2016 the Chinese Navy commissioned a 4,000-ton frigate in late February and sent it on a 7-month deployment six weeks later. It often takes a year or more for the US Navy to deploy a new destroyer. What are the Chinese doing that the US Navy does not? What does the US Navy do that the Chinese don’t?

"Two gray ships riding on the sea go by. They’ve got a bunch of flags flying and a bunch of sailors up on deck. One of them couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag and the other one will rock anything that it comes up against. Could we commission a guided-missile destroyer and steam it out of the harbor and take it on a world cruise? Yeah, I could. But in that situation I would not be taking care of what I refer to as the center of the universe. I want those men and women on that ship to be 100 percent confident in the ship and confident in the execution of any mission leadership may give them. So what are the Chinese thinking? I don’t know anything about it. I would tell you that I find it kind of interesting they feel they have to do that. To what end? I don’t know."

The US was disappointingly passive when China seized Scarborough shoal and constructed artificial islands. While the Ph was being targeted by China, other "reliable" and "more strategic" US allies continued to receive billions in military aid while the Ph received a small fraction subject to conditions. No wonder during that time, some were starting to compare the Ph to abandoned Czechoslavakia just before WW 2. Hopefully the incoming Trump administration would signal a new beginning for US-Ph relations.
