US warship challenges China's claims in South China Sea - officials By: Idrees Ali and Matt Spetalnick, Reuters October 21, 2016 10:37 PM
WASHINGTON - A US navy warship sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on Friday, the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, US officials said.
The guided-missile destroyer USS Decatur challenged "excessive maritime claims" near the Paracel Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals over which China has territorial disputes with its neighbors, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The latest US patrol, first reported by Reuters, is expected to anger Beijing and could further escalate tensions over the South China Sea. The destroyer sailed within waters claimed by China, close to but not within the 12-nautical-mile territorial limits of the islands, the officials said.

Paracel? Maybe the US is now staying away in the Spratlys because Dutraydor's Independent Foreign policy has de facto allowed China's presence there.

China slams 'provocative' US sail-by in South China By: Agence France-Presse October 22, 2016 3:28 PM
BEIJING - China has slammed the US for sailing a warship near disputed territory in the South China Sea, saying the move was a "serious illegal act" and "deliberately provocative".
In a statement on its website late Friday night, the country's defense ministry said two Chinese naval vessels warned off a US ship after it entered "Chinese territorial waters" near the Paracel Islands, known as Xisha in Chinese.
China controls all of the islands, which are also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan.

Trump will pursue 'regional hegemony' in South China Sea: Chinese academics By: Reuters November 25, 2016 4:36 PM
BEIJING - A Donald Trump presidency does not mean the United States will withdraw from the South China Sea, but rather will continue pursuing "regional hegemony", Chinese academics who drafted a report for an influential government think tank said on Friday.
Ensuring "absolute control" over the South China Sea was the crux of US military strategy in the Asia-Pacific, according to what the authors said was China’s first ever public report on the USmilitary presence in the region, released on Friday in Beijing.
"There will be no overturning change to US policy in the South China Sea," said Wu Shicun, head of the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, an influential Hainan-based think tank that wrote the report.

China returning US drone, says Washington 'hyping up' incident By: Ben Blanchard and Steve Holland, Reuters December 17, 2016 8:28 PM
BEIJING/WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- (UPDATE - 6:33 a.m., Dec 18, 2016) China will return an underwater US drone seized by a naval vessel this week in the South China Sea, both countries said on Saturday, but Beijing complained that Washington had been "hyping up" the incident.
The drone, known as an unmanned underwater vehicle, was taken on Thursday, the first seizure of its kind in recent memory. The Pentagon went public with its complaint after the action and said on Saturday it had secured a deal to get the drone back.
"Through direct engagement with Chinese authorities, we have secured an understanding that the Chinese will return the UUV to the United States," Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement.
The incident drew criticism from US President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to take a more aggressive approach in dealing with Beijing.

File protest vs US and China for intrusion in EEZ - Roque
December 18, 2016 1:43 PM
MANILA, Philippines -- A party-list lawmaker and international law expert is urging government to file protests against both China and the United States for the recent incident involving the seizure of an underwater drone just 50 nautical miles off Subic Bay, “well within the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone.”
At the same time, Kabayan Representative Harry Roque urged President Rodrigo Duterte to “urgently consider the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement in order to protect the territorial integrity of the Philippines.”
“By abandoning those agreements, we can adopt a position of neutrality, following the footsteps of countries such as Switzerland,” he said.

It is a drone. Why remove the VFA & EDCA? Basically, only China should be given a protest why they are in PH waters.
Oh, I forgot, PH is being sold to China by the gov't.

China says discussing return of undersea drone with U.S. military | reuters - Dec 19, 2016

The Pentagon went public with its complaint about the incident and said on Saturday it had secured a deal to get the drone back. China's defense ministry had earlier accused Washington of hyping up the issue.

The drone, which the Pentagon said was operating lawfully was collecting data about the salinity, temperature and clarity of the water about 50 nautical miles northwest of Subic Bay, off the Philippines.
The Philippines said the occurrence of the incident inside its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) was "very troubling".

Deep Suspicions
China is deeply suspicious of any U.S. military activities in the resource-rich South China Sea, with state media and experts saying the use of the drone was likely part of U.S. surveillance efforts in the disputed waterway.
The overseas edition of the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily said in a commentary on Monday the USNS Bowditch, which was operating the drone, was a "serial offender" when it came to spying operations against China.

US sees China returning seized drone as early as Tuesday By: Phil Stewart, Idrees Ali and Ben Blanchard, Reuters December 20, 2016 9:05 AM
WASHINGTON/BEIJING -- The United States expects China to return soon an underwater US drone seized by a Chinese naval vessel last week, with one US official telling Reuters the exchange could happen as early as Tuesday at an agreed location in the South China Sea.
China's seizure of the unmanned underwater vehicle triggered a diplomatic protest and speculation about whether it will strengthen US President-elect Donald Trump's hand as he seeks a tougher line with Beijing.
A Chinese warship took the drone, which the Pentagon says uses unclassified, commercially available technology to collect oceanographic data, on Thursday about 50 nautical miles northwest of Subic Bay in the Philippines.
The US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said talks with Beijing on the timing of the exchange were advancing, with two saying they expected the incident to be resolved satisfactorily "relatively soon."
