Reuters - 4 hours ago

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Wednesday complained the media were ignoring radars and weapons deployed by other claimants in the South China Sea, and unfairly targeting China, following reports of its deployment of fighter jets and radars in the disputed waterway.

Harris: PACOM Needs More Subs, Long-Range Missiles To Counter Chinese Threats

By: Megan Eckstein
February 23, 2016

To protect the aircraft carriers and maintain stability in the region despite Chinese aggression in the South China Sea, Harris said he needs more submarines, more long-range weapons, and more intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

China is Cruising for a Bruising
FEBRUARY 22, 2016
BY JERRY HENDRIX

The U.S. Navy must get ready for big new Chinese ships that will try to ram Americans who approach their fake islands.

There are a set of well-established rules of the road for ships at sea, rules that delineate who is to “give way” to the other when two vessels meet in order to avoid going bump in the night. But there is also an unwritten “law of gross tonnage” that recognizes that larger ships are less maneuverable and that smaller ships should maneuver to avoid them. Physics, it seems, has a place on the world’s oceans, and China intends to take advantage of some very hard science.

China gearing up for East Asia dominance: U.S. commander
WASHINGTON | By David Brunnstrom and Arshad Mohammed

China is "changing the operational landscape" in the South China Sea by deploying missiles and radar as part of an effort to militarily dominate East Asia, a senior U.S. military official said on Tuesday.

China is "clearly militarizing the South China (Sea)," said Admiral Harry Harris, head of the U.S. Pacific Command, adding: "You'd have to believe in a flat Earth to think otherwise."

Harris said he believed China's deployment of surface-to-air missiles on Woody Island in the South China Sea's Paracel chain, new radars on Cuarteron Reef in the Spratlys and its building of airstrips were "actions that are changing in my opinion the operational landscape in the South China Sea."

China's 60,000 ton White "Elephant" Ships will have a hard time catching up in shallow waters around KIG/ WPS.

If they're thinking of playing the victim in WPS, against the US and it's Allies, then they are wrong, for it won't work with the US.

I think they forgot that the USN's and it's Allies have the right to self defence, especially when under attack, whether by water cannons, ramming, which is their no.1 purpose for these kind of ships and much worse, if US Military and it's Allies lives are in danger, especially inside PH territory, jurisdiction, technically that's an act of war and if they try to use their 76mm main guns and MG's.

The POINT IS.. THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS OUT THERE AND IT'S NOT A MATTER OF THE AREA UNDER DISPUTE ANYMORE, THEY ARE INTRUDING, NO JURISDICTION OVER THE AREA, UNDER UNCLOS, SO THEY CAN BE CAPTURED AND BOARDED.

China is clearly trying to anticipate the result of ITLOS ruling that will technically in favour of the Philippines, on legal basis, for coercion, intimidation, illegal territory grabbing are the only way they can win, against small Country neighbours and it's inferior Military compared to PLA Armed Forces.

Mind you, Woody Island is just 125 nautical miles away from Panatag Shoal, I believe that once a ruling favours PH, the US and the Philippines will try to recapture this area (Panatag Shoal) back to PH/ US Control for it's truly part of PH territory and in order to secure incoming/ outgoing US Assets in Subic Base which is also part of EDCA Temporary Basing agreement.

Next is "Mischief Reef" also I believe inside or within PH's 200 NM EEZ, so either they vacate the area or much better to sink it down below.

U.S. mulls pledge on disputed Philippines outpost
By Bill Gertz - Wednesday, February 24, 2016

The U.S. military should consider offering new security guarantees to the Philippines similar to those promised to Japan in response to any military attacks by China in maritime disputes in Asia, the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific said this week.

The issue came up Tuesday during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing led by Sen. John McCain with Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command.

Mr. McCain said he is concerned China may seek to expel the Philippines from Second Thomas Shoal, or build new infrastructure on nearby Scarborough Shoal. “Given this, we should consider clarifying how the United States will respond to an attack on the territory or armed forces of the Philippines under the U.S.-Philippine Mutual Defense Treaty,” the Arizona Republican said.

U.S. warns China on militarization of South China Sea | reuters - Mar 2, 2016
Quote:

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Tuesday warned China against "aggressive" actions in the South China Sea region, including the placement of surface-to-air missiles on a disputed island.

"China must not pursue militarization in the South China Sea," Carter said in a wide-ranging speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. "Specific actions will have specific consequences."

Asked what the consequences could be, Carter told reporters the U.S. military was already increasing deployments to the Asia-Pacific region and would spend $425 million through 2020 to pay for more exercises and training with countries in the region that were unnerved by China's actions.

He said China's behavior had fueled trilateral agreements that would have been "unthinkable" even a few years ago.

The U.S. just sent a carrier strike group to confront China
By David Larter, Navy Times 5:53 p.m. EST March 3, 2016

The U.S. Navy has dispatched a small armada to the South China Sea.

The carrier John C. Stennis, two destroyers, two cruisers and the 7th Fleet flagship have sailed into the disputed waters in recent days, according to military officials. The carrier strike group is the latest show of force in the tense region, with the U.S. asserting that China is militarizing the region to guard its excessive territorial claims.

Stennis is joined in the region by the cruisers Antietam and Mobile Bay, and the destroyers Chung-Hoon and Stockdale. The command ship Blue Ridge, the floating headquarters of the Japan-based 7th Fleet, is also in the area, en route to a port visit in the Philippines, and Stennis deployed from Washington state on Jan. 15.

U.S. F/A-18Es performed an airborne change of command in the skies near the disputed South China Sea islands
Mar 12 2016 -
By Dario Leone
Airborne change of command U.S. Navy-style over South China Sea.

On Mar 7, revitalizing a time-honored naval tradition, three F/A-18E Super Hornets assigned to the Warhawks of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 97 executed an airborne change of command overhead USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as Cmdr. Doug Peterson was relieved by Cmdr. Matt Doyle as commanding officer.

As the aircraft carrier was sailing in the South China Sea the three “Rhinos” (as the Super Hornets are dubbed by their aircrews) performed a symbolic formation lead change with Capt. Richard Brophy, Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, presiding over the transfer of leadership while a flight deck full of Warhawk Sailors and other spectators watched below.

US says losing access to China-claimed waters would be huge
By Rod McGuirk (Associated Press) | Updated March 16, 2016 - 10:58pm

CANBERRA — A U.S. Navy commander warned Wednesday that if the United States lost access to international waters claimed by China in the South China Sea, it would have far-reaching implications beyond military.

U.S. Pacific Fleet commander Adm. Scott H. Swift told a conference on Indo-Pacific maritime security on Wednesday that sailing warships in freedom of navigation operations through contested areas where multiple countries have competing territorial claims was "not a naval issue." He said the issue is the impact on the global economy and international law.

But he said that the United States has no expectation that such a loss of access would ever occur.

The U.S. Navy has angered China by sending warships close to artificial islands built by Beijing that include airstrips and radar stations. The U.S. lays no claims to the waters, but says it has an interest in ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight and peaceful resolution of ownership disputes.
