4 US F-18 HORNETS CHALLENGED BY CHINESE NAVY IN WEST PHILIPPINE SEA
July 2, 2015 - Tankler News

Four F-18 Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing Five aboard USS George Washington were challenged by Chinese Navy above the West Philippine Sea.

According to a report sent to former Interior Secretary Rafael Alunan, Lt. Cmdr. Marion "Mitch" Paulson responded that they were over Philippine territorial waters and are conducting routine patrol flights.

PLA Navy threatened to scramble a squadron of fighter jets.

However, China's continued threats were ignored by Mitchell and ordered the Super Hornets to switch on their radar weapons systems and continued on with their mission and sortie.

The report noted: "No PLA Navy or Airforce aircrafts came".

We are still verifying this report from Armed Forces of the Philippines.

If true. It was either:

1) A Chinese bluff.

2) Those Chinese pilots had second thoughts.

3) Chinese leadership didn't know what to do and couldn't get their superiors to ask for orders.

4) They had no capability (at that moment) to send aircraft that far south.

Like they said, it's pretty clear that they (US) were doing routine patrol flights over PH territorial waters.. but they will never confirm this particular incident, for this will surely humiliate Beijing.
USN just being cautious and at the same time maybe just waiting for the PLA's to make a mistake or wrong move, seems to me that their eyes are super glued wide, so under any circumstances, NO blinking.

If this is true that the US did a patrol on PH territorial waters in the WPS, then we must keep this from the Makabayans... they would surely react against it. And will march towards US embassy saying the US is trampling again on our sovereignty.

Probably this would be the command of the China spies to those they pay in the Makabayan blocks, to disrupt the social status quo. And make US, and everything that it brings including EDCA, as evil and unwanted in the PH.

US Commander Joins South China Sea Surveillance Flight During Philippines Trip
Admiral Scott Swift joins a mission on board a P-8 aircraft.

The new U.S. commander of the Pacific Fleet participated in a surveillance flight over the disputed South China Sea in an American spy plane as part of his inaugural trip to the Asia-Pacific.

Admiral Scott Swift, who assumed command of the Fleet in May, joined a seven-hour maritime surveillance mission on board a P-8A Poseidon plane this weekend. According to the U.S. Pacific Command, he took part “to witness firsthand the full range of the Poseidon’s capabilities.”

The P-8A Poseidon is designed for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance missions as well as long-range anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare. It is capable of broad-area maritime and littoral operations, and can fly as high as 41,000 feet and travel up to 490 knots.

China says U.S. 'militarizing' South China Sea
Thu Jul 30, 2015 7:05am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Defence Ministry on Thursday accused the United States of "militarizing" the South China Sea by staging patrols and joint military drills there, ramping up the rhetoric ahead of a key regional security meeting in Malaysia next week.

China has repeatedly urged Washington not to take sides in the escalating maritime dispute over the area, where the Asian giant last year stepped up its creation of artificial islands, alarming neighbors and provoking U.S. criticism.

Washington has demanded China halt land reclamation and militarization of the disputed area and pursue a peaceful resolution according to international law.

Kerry says to discuss South China Sea tensions with China's Wang
Tue Aug 4, 2015 10:26pm EDT

By David Brunnstrom

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he would discuss Washington's call for a halt to activities that are raising tensions in the disputed South China Sea with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday.

Kerry made the comment to reporters before he and Wang met in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of meetings of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Their talks come after ASEAN states on Tuesday called for restraint in the South China Sea amid concerns over Beijing's rapid creation of seven artificial islands in the strategic waterway. Several ASEAN members have competing claims with Beijing in the South China Sea.

Regaining the Initiative in the South China Sea
How the U.S. and its partners could provide a robust counter to the growing PRC presence in the South China Sea.

By Col Michael W. “Starbaby” Pietrucha
August 05, 2015

To endeavor to seize the strategic initiative in military struggle, proactively plan for military struggle in all directions and domains, and grasp the opportunities to accelerate military building, reform and development.
- Chinese Military Strategy, Chinese Ministry of National Defense, May 26, 2015.

On May 26, the State Council Information Office released an English-language version of the Chinese Military Strategy. Short, sweet, and immensely more readable than its American counterpart, the PRC’s military strategy is notable for its transition to an overt, “active defense” posture for Chinese military forces. Among the many salient points is the emphasis on gaining the strategic initiative, which is one of eight specified strategic tasks for the Chinese military.

This is not a new development, but recent activities in the South China Sea (SCS) illustrate the reality that China has already seized the strategic initiative in those waters. Force dispositions in the SCS make it clear that the PRC has no intention of surrendering the initiative. A passive U.S. response will only continue to demonstrate to China the usefulness of its approach, while traditional flexible deterrent options are both unnecessarily provocative and likely to be ineffective. A comprehensive, long-term engagement and modernization strategy focused on Partner Nation (PN) and U.S. airpower may provide an opportunity for the U.S. to reverse PRC gains in the SCS and prevent further gains.

Kerry says U.S. will not accept restrictions in South China Sea
Thu Aug 6, 2015 7:18am EDT

By David Brunnstrom and Praveen Menon

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday accused China of restricting navigation and overflights in the disputed South China Sea, despite giving assurances that such movements would not be impeded.

Addressing a regional meeting in Kuala Lumpur that has been dominated by the South China Sea, Kerry said China's construction of facilities for "military purposes" on man-made islands was raising tensions and risked "militarization" by other claimant states.

Kerry's blunt criticism of Beijing, in front of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, is likely to put the South China Sea at the top of the agenda when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Washington next month, experts said.

China hits back at U.S. criticism over South China Sea 'restrictions'

BEIJING (Reuters) - China hit back on Monday at U.S. criticism that it restricts navigation and overflights in the South China Sea amid a festering marine territorial dispute with some of its neighbors.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims..

Freedom of overflights and navigation doesn't mean allowing foreign warships and military jets to violate other countries' sovereignty and security, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement to Reuters on Monday, after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry accused China of restricting such movements in the region last week.

Pentagon to Increase Drone Flights Over South China Sea
Over the next four years, the number of daily U.S. drone flights is planned to increase by 50 percent.

L1001025
By Franz-Stefan Gady
August 18, 2015

The U.S. Department of Defense is planning to step up the number of drone surveillance flights by 50 percent over the next four years the Wall Street Journal reports.

A senior defense official told the Wall Street Journal that the Pentagon in particular seeks to improve its intelligence collection capabilities in places such as Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, North Africa, and the South China Sea.

In detail, the new plan envisions an increase of the number of flights from 61 to 90 by 2019. The majority of missions are currently flown by the U.S. Air Force (USAF). However, in addition to around 60 USAF flights, the new plan foresees as many as 16 sorties flown by the U.S. Army, up to four by the Special Forces Command, and around ten by government contractors. The USAF currently shares intelligence feeds from 22 out of its 60 daily sorties with the Central Intelligence Agency.
