Chinese weaponry spotted on artificial island, US says

SINGAPORE (AP) — U.S. surveillance detected two large artillery vehicles on one of the artificial islands that China is creating in the South China Sea, U.S. officials said Friday, heightening concerns that Beijing could use the land reclamation projects for military purposes.

What China dangerously underestimates about America's interest in the South China Sea
Kyle Mizokami - The Week

The United States is the only country capable of countering China's claim to the South China Sea. Despite the extraordinary growth and progress of the Chinese military over the past two decades, the U.S. military is still more powerful by a wide margin.

China is currently operating from a position of weakness. That's precisely why it must be countered now, before it grows more powerful. It's important to confront China over this issue now and - to borrow a term Chinese officials often use - "teach it a lesson."

Left unchecked, we don't know where China's ultimate ambitions might lie. It's best we don't find out. In international relations, little is cut and dried. Complexity rules. One thing is cut and dried: China - or any other country - cannot be allowed to take the South China Sea unilaterally. Doing so would let might make right, and embolden the country to make more claims in the future.

But simply letting China do whatever it wants is not an option. The risks are much smaller now, while China is weak, and infinitely better than the alternative of confronting a stronger, more powerful China down the road. The sooner China learns to play by the rules, the better.

U.S. says China's island-building erodes security; Beijing angered

By David Alexander and Rachel Armstrong

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Saturday that China's island-building in the South China Sea was undermining security in the Asia-Pacific, drawing a scathing response from the foreign ministry in Beijing.

Carter, speaking to top defense officials from the Asia-Pacific at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, acknowledged that several countries had created outposts in the region's disputed islands, but he said the scope of China's activity created uncertainty about its future plans.

"China has reclaimed over 2,000 acres, more than all other claimants combined ... and China did so in only the last 18 months," Carter told the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum. "It is unclear how much farther China will go."

US, China Stuck Over Reclaimed Lands | defensenews - May 30, 2015

History also provides a warning. In 2001, a US Navy EP-3 surveillance aircraft collided with a Chinese fighter jet. The collision caused the EP-3 to make an emergency landing on China's Hainan Island. The crisis lasted until the US government apologized, and the crew was released.

If a US spy plane, such as a P-8, was forced down over Chinese territory, it could lead to a messy situation for the relationship between the two countries.

The best way to avoid that situation happening, Shear indicated, is to maintain the lines of communication. But he did acknowledge the current situation could impact the broader relationship between the US and China.

China, U.S. tone down rhetoric but far from South China Sea solution

By Raju Gopalakrishnan and Rachel Armstrong

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - After a months-long row over Beijing's island-building in the South China Sea, the United States and China were relatively restrained at Asia's top security forum this weekend, but no closer to any solution.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter told the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that China was threatening security in the region with its maritime construction work, but acknowledged other claimant countries to the disputed sea were also at fault.

"There's no progress in the South China Sea (dispute), but the atmosphere has calmed a bit, thanks to reasonable consideration by all parties," said Major General Jin Yinan of China's National Defense University, a delegate at the conference. "The U.S. has adjusted its stance a little."

Riding the Tiger of Anti-U.S. Sentiment in the South China Sea
Beijing’s tough rhetoric over maritime disputes has inflamed nationalist fervor online. That’s not necessarily a good thing for China.

The South China Sea has long been the focus of simmering maritime disputes between China, which claims sovereignty over almost all of the sea, and its neighbors in the Asia-Pacific, each with smaller overlapping claims. But strains between China and the United States have increased since February, when satellite images revealed that Chinese vessels are engaging in a massive reclamation project to turn submerged reefs into small islands capable of supporting airstrips. Now a small but vocal group of nationalist web users are seizing on what they view as the latest provocations in the region — and with its own harsh rhetoric, Beijing risks painting itself into a corner to appease its strongly nationalist citizenry.

Since May, tensions between the United States and China have escalated further. On May 20, a U.S. surveillance plane flew over one of the disputed regions with a reporting crew on board, who caught on video the Chinese navy warning the plane eight times to leave the area. On May 25, Foreign Ministry spokesperson called on the United States to “end its provocative behavior.” Then on May 26, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter called for China to halt its island reclamation activities, calling China “out of step” with international norms and indicating that the U.S. military will continue to operate in the South China Sea — comments which he repeated at the May 30 opening address of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, a high-profile security forum held annually in Singapore.

Russia Joins South China Sea dispute as ally to China & Brunei :wow:

BY ATHENA YENKO ON JUNE 2, 2015 12:45 AM EMAIL @MORNINGNEWSUSA
Morning News USA previously reported that World War III is brewing in the South China Sea. Japan, Australia and the United States will conduct war games in July in the wake of perceived threats over the disputed land.

On Saturday, Russia announced it will also hold military drills in the South China Sea in 2016 together with China and Brunei. Russia accused the U.S. of contaminating the Asia Pacific Region of the same “color revolutions” it brought the Middle East.

I think it's time to set up a SEATO/ NATO like alliance in South East Asia in order to single out, who our possible enemies are??? It's better to be committed with each other, than waiting for someone, hoping, expecting, but no one will come in the end. :salute:

Pentagon Acknowledges Weapons on China's Artificial Islands

June 02 2015 | by Kris Osborn
Senior Pentagon officials acknowledged for the first time that China is placing weapons on artificially constructed islands in the South China Sea in an apparent attempt to assert more control and claim more territory in the region.
"We can confirm that we have identified some weapons on one of these reclaimed Chinese islands," a Pentagon official said Tuesday.
The admission comes as Defense Secretary Carter announces a new Southeast Asia Maritime Security Initiative designed to support a Senate Armed Services Committee proposal to arm and equip U.S. allies in the Asia Pacific.

Imo, Take note! The US acknowledging that there's clear and present danger on those China Artificial Islands, means neutralizing the threat at any time, hence the sudden announcement of Russia joining in the game.. Maybe China asked for SO, to Russia in order to foil any US plans.
I think Russia will have a hard time giving China a hand if push comes to shove, all the US & it's Allies, NATO will do is to execute threats, then synchronized attacks in the Ukraine border, Crimea etc. if ever...
The Russian's will be forced to fly n sail back to their motherland, China home alone :armyLol:
It will only take the US 7th Fleet to annihilate the whole PLA Forces. (If ever)

Good point. Crimea and Ukraine is much more important for Russia because it serves as buffer areas against NATO. I think the most Russia would do with regards with China is lip service not even tough talk that the US is doing now. And why would they do so? Besides they have to go through Japan first and to a lesser extent Korea. Ukraine is literally on their backyard.why would they commit on China and go all the.way to South China Sea?

SEATO is next to impossible now. You just can't trust some of our fellow ASEAN members. We are closer in values with Australia, Japan, new zealand and Korea. Japan and Korea will eventually make up or at the very least set aside differences and some distrust for the greater.concerns w/c are north korea, China and Russia.

Personally, I don't totally SG too. Looks like a mirror image of Taiwan.
