Beijing’s South China Sea claim ‘problematic’ —US official By JO BIDDLE, Agence France-PresseJuly 8, 2014 3:31pm (Updated 3:45 p.m.) BEIJING - Beijing's claim to almost the whole of the South China Sea is "problematic" and the Asian giant's actions have raised tensions, a senior US official said Tuesday on the eve of high-stakes talks. China also disputes islands with Japan—a US security ally that Washington is treaty-bound to defend if attacked—and officials traveling with Secretary of State John Kerry said they had "heightened concerns" about "the readiness of claimants to utilize military, paramilitary, coastguard forces in furtherance of their claims." <snipped> "The ambiguity associated with the nine-dash line is problematic," said a US official traveling with Kerry. <snipped> The heightened tensions are "very relevant to the United States as a Pacific power, as a major trading nation, as an important consumer of the sea lanes and as a long-term guarantor of stability in the Asia-Pacific region," the senior US administration official said. The official spoke anonymously in order to discuss the talks frankly, and added that the conversation will be held in "a very direct, candid, and constructive way." <snipped> China has said it is committed to diplomatic, peaceful means to address the claims, the US official said. "We want China to honor that and live up to its word." GMA |

Has the Thucydidean Trap Already Sprung on China and the US? Recent pessimism suggests that China and the U.S. are already well on the road to great power confrontation By Shannon Tiezzi July 10, 2014 Despite their avowed commitment to avoiding the Thucydidean Trap, neither the U.S. nor China has given any signs that they are willing to deviate from the classic pattern of a security dilemma, upping the ante tit-for-tat. Certainly, at this stage neither side will want to take de-escalatory action unless it's given a clear sign of goodwill from the other counterpart. The best we can hope for in the short-term are modest confidence-building measures, including increased military transparency on both sides and a serious commitment to avoid provocative actions. Even if both governments are willing to consider altering their policies, domestic resistance in both China and the U.S. will be fierce. Accommodating a rival will leave leaders open to accusations of foreign policy weakness. There are extremists on both sides who believe that war is preferable to giving an inch in the contest for regional dominance. The leaders in Beijing and Washington are wise enough to know better. The question, then, is whether they are bold enough to take real action to check the current slide toward conflict. The Diplomat |

China tells U.S. to stay out of South China Seas dispute Reuters By By Ben Blanchard 30 minutes ago "What is regretful is that certain countries have in recent years have strengthened their illegal presence through construction and increased arms build up. China would resolutely protect its sovereignty and maritime rights and had always upheld resolving the issue based on direct talks with the countries involved "on the basis of respecting historical facts and international law. We hope that countries outside the region strictly maintain their neutrality, clearly distinguish right from wrong and earnestly respect the joint efforts of countries in the region to maintain regional peace and stability." - Chinese Foreign Ministry Reuters / Yahoo ** Why do I get the feeling that they aren't happy about your armed forces modernization programme? It's always been their mantra that they are being threatened, that the arms build up of their neighbors are a threat for them and intended for them, that they are the victim here and what they were doing in the WPS are just exercising their so-called rights and they are on the defensive mode and that they were right and everyone else is wrong...
Oh, and did I say that they think they are right and everybody else is wrong? |

China to US: do not exaggerate, their is no tension in the sea by Samuel Biag 11/08/2014 "Someone has been exaggerating or even playing up the so-called tension in the South China Sea." He is pertaining to US as 'someone' from outside the region. We do not agree with such a practice, and we call for vigilance in the motives behind them." - Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister According to report, US Secretary Kerry made the Chinese minister wait for 30 minutes before entertaining him for a talk. US to monitor South China Sea, talks with Australia on regional defense By LESLEY WROUGHTON, Reuters August 11, 2014 11:04pm SYDNEY - The United States will monitor the South China Sea to see whether "de-escalatory steps" are being taken, a U.S. State Department official said on Monday, a day after China repelled U.S. pressure to rein in actions in the disputed waters. The official spoke as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Sydney for a meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Australian officials to discuss increased defense and cyber security cooperation. <snipped> "We will also be monitoring the actual situation around the rocks, reefs, and shoals in the South China Sea." <snipped> "I think it's pretty clear, China's actions speak for themselves," U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters at a briefing in Sydney, adding the U.S. position remained that such disputes should be resolved through international law. Chinese interceptions of US military planes could intensify 12 Hours Ago - Reuters One Chinese naval officer has advice for fighter pilots intercepting U.S. surveillance planes in the wake of an incident over the South China Sea last week that Washington condemned as dangerous - fly even closer. The comments by Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong from the National Defense University in Beijing, reported in state media this week, reflect what Chinese military experts say is China's determination to shield its expanding ballistic missile submarine fleet from U.S. spy planes. "We didn't give them enough pressure before. A knife at the throat is the only deterrence. From now on, we must fly even closer to U.S. surveillance aircraft." - Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong CNBC |

Exposing China's Provocations U.S. and allied forces should film Chinese assertiveness and let the whole world see it firsthand. By James R. Holmes August 28, 2014 If a picture is worth a thousand words; a video clip speaks volumes. Pick your favorite expression for deploying factual evidence to debunk mythmaking. In a war of conflicting narratives such as the one raging across the China seas, the spokesman who produces hard evidence commands an edge over one who can only resort to bluster. Video placed in context beats a shouting match any day. Classic communist tactics: These are people who believe you invent your own truth by saying the same thing over again and again with the utmost petulance. They repeated their demands - however outlandish - until their UN interlocutors capitulated just to shut them up. Any parent with a bratty kid can relate. But it's tough for Chinese officialdom or punditry to manufacture a false reality about, say, harassment of Vietnamese, Japanese, or American units when Vietnamese, Japanese, or American spokesmen splash video footage across as many media outlets as possible. Let news consumers decide whether to believe their lyin' eyes or some PLA mouthpiece. PLA Air Force fighter jets have been harassing U.S. Navy reconnaissance aircraft over the South China Sea. True to form, Chinese spokesmen and commentators managed to both deny the aerial incident and fault the American aircrew for it. So for heaven's sake, let's quit making excuses on China's behalf. If something looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck... unless and until proven otherwise. A PLA Air Force squadron doesn't go rogue over and over again, as some Western commentators speculated following the P-8 incident. From now on let's assume Chinese mariners and airmen are acting on oft-stated Chinese policy when encounters occur. If U.S. or friendly forces are at fault in such episodes, senior leaders should own up to it. If Chinese representatives play fast and loose with the facts, then produce video evidence. They may deny it, claim it was Photoshopped, or whatever. But the burden will shift to them of avoiding looking like Baghdad Bob - of convincing viewers their eyes deceive them. Beijing Bob, call your office! The Diplomat |
