China tells Australia off over S. China Sea stance
Reuters

Posted at Dec 15 2017 10:58 AM | Updated as of Dec 15 2017 11:03 AM

BEIJING - China's naval chief has told his Australian counterpart that his country's actions on the South China Sea run counter to the general trend of peace and stability in the disputed waterway.

Australia, a close ally of the United States, has repeatedly expressed concern over the disputed South China Sea, where China has built manmade islands, some of which are equipped with runways, surface-to-air missiles and radars.

Australia has previously drawn criticism from China for running surveillance flights over the South China Sea and supporting U.S. freedom of navigation exercises there.

British Defence Secretary warns Australia to remain vigilant to China intent

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

The UK's Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson made the frank comments as he wrapped up a two-day visit to Sydney and Canberra where he met with key military and political figures.

"I think we've always got to be vigilant to any form of malign intent ... Australia [and] Britain see China as a country of great opportunities, but we shouldn't be blind to the ambition that China has and we've got to defend our national security interests," Mr Williamson told the ABC. ...

At the conclusion of his first visit to Australia, Mr Williamson said Britain could learn from this country's experience in handling Beijing's attempts to buy influence and to interfere in the political process.

"A good example is in terms of what you've been looking at in terms of critical national infrastructure ... we've always encouraged investment from outside but it's making sure it's for right time of investment and it isn't something that puts our utilities, our critical national infrastructure in a more vulnerable position."

Brits to assert right of navigation in claimed sovereign waters off China

The Australian

A British warship will next month sail from Australia through the South China Sea, almost all of which is claimed as sovereign waters by China, for the explicit purpose of demonstrating that the sea is international waters and to assert freedom-of-navigation rights, British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson says. ...

“She’ll be sailing through the South China Sea (on the way home) and making it clear our navy has a right to do that,” Mr Williamson told The Australian in an exclusive interview. ...

While asserting his belief the Trump administration remains fully committed to the US alliance system, of which Britain and Australia are key members, Mr Williamson suggested it was important the US, Britain, Australian and other countries “assert our values” in the South China Sea. ...

Mr Williamson made a flying visit to Sydney and Canberra this week in part to support BAE’s bid to supply new frigates.

"Buy our warships, we'll send ours to fight next to them." Good sales pitch.
