Win or lose, Cameron's political career hangs by a thread
By Andrew Osborn
LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron is Britain's most popular major party leader and his Conservative Party the most trusted on the economy after helping revive it. But win or lose a knife-edge election this week, his career hangs by a thread.
If he loses, it's over instantly. And even if he wins but doesn't secure an overall majority, which opinion polls suggest no party will achieve, he could face a leadership challenge from inside his famously ruthless party before too long.

Last chance for Cameron and Miliband to break UK election deadlock
By Andrew Osborn
LONDON (Reuters) - Campaigning in Britain's most unpredictable election in a generation enters its final day on Wednesday with the two main parties level in most polls and neither on track to command a majority in the parliament of the world's fifth largest economy.
Despite more than five weeks of campaigning, neither Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party nor Ed Miliband's opposition Labour has established a clear lead, and the outcome of Thursday's vote could be messy and uncertain.

Gridlock looms in Britain; last election poll sees no clear winner
By Guy Faulconbridge and Andrew Osborn
LONDON (Reuters) - Britons voted on Thursday in the tightest election for decades; one that could cause government gridlock, push the world's fifth-largest economy closer to leaving the European Union and stoke a second attempt by Scotland to break away.
Final opinion polls showed Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives and Ed Miliband's opposition Labour Party almost in a dead heat, indicating neither will win enough seats for an outright majority in the 650-seat parliament.
However, the surveys suggested there had been some late movement toward Labour.

UK election results: David Cameron to lead majority Conservative Government after extraordinary and unexpected night David Cameron is celebrating an extraordinary and unexpected election victory as election results delivered him a second term as Prime Minister and the first majority Conservative government for nearly 20 years.
Speaking outside Downing Street, the Tory leader said he had been proud to lead the first coalition government in 70 years.
"I want to thank all those who worked so hard to make it a success and in particular on this day Nick Clegg," he said. "Elections can be bruising clashes of ideas and arguments and a lot of people who believe profoundly in public service have seen that service cut short.

Time for Triumphant Tories to Restore Britain’s Global Power
The British Conservative Party’s victory in yesterday’s British elections should give hope to U.S. Republicans who remember how Margaret Thatcher’s decisive victory in 1979 preceded Ronald Reagan’s sweep of the U.S. election in 1980. That Prime Minister David Cameron’s party managed to actually pick up seats in Parliament — despite being the incumbent party running on a program of economic austerity — makes the victory even more significant. The Tories have shown how to win an election under difficult circumstances, by projecting a degree of economic competence and leadership that was lacking in their opponents. Now they must return Britain to its historic leadership role in the world.
Clearly British voters were unconvinced by the Labor Party’s determination to rewind the clock to 1970s-style economic nationalism, with vitriolic attacks on British business and the reform program that recently has made the UK the fastest-growing big economy in Europe. On the campaign trail, Labour leader Ed Miliband sounded more like an enraptured college student who had just read Marx for the first time than like the prime minister of a country that hosts the world’s financial capital. Shadow chancellor Ed Balls, who lost his parliamentary seat yesterday, could not name a single British business leader who supported the Labour party’s economic platform.

'Winner takes all' vote system exaggerates Britain's divisions
By Mark Trevelyan
LONDON (Reuters) - David Cameron can thank Britain's winner-takes-all voting system for handing him an outright majority in parliament on just 37 percent of the vote. But by boosting the power of Scottish nationalists, it has also intensified one of his biggest headaches.
The results of Thursday's election highlight more starkly than ever the anomalies of a system that allocates seats not according to the parties' total number of nationwide votes but on the basis of 650 local 'first-past-the-post' contests.
